Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Acts 21

As Paul continues to be motivated to go to Jerusalem, some may assume that their is a contradiction in his will and the Lord's will. But I see it differently. We read that as Paul tarried in Tyre, there were faithful disciples -

"...who said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem." (New Testament | Acts 21:4)

And again the disciples in Caesarea as well a Paul's traveling companions -

"...both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem." (New Testament | Acts 21:12)

Even the prophet Agabus -

"...took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles." (New Testament | Acts 21:11)

Some would assume that the Holy Ghost is instructing Paul not to go to Jerusalem. But I believe that is not the case. These members were not entitled to personal revelation for Paul. There were entitled to receive the promptings of the Holy Ghost to warn or provide Paul with a much clearer picture as he asked for guidance from the Spirit. Paul, therefore concluded -

"...What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus."
(New Testament | Acts 21:13)

It was then that these disciples all agreed -

"...The will of the Lord be done." (New Testament | Acts 21:14)

I have sat in council where each member was inspired by the Holy Ghost to share their thoughts and incite. Some of those thoughts may have been in conflict. But nonetheless, it painted a full picture where the will of the Lord was spiritually manifest.

Acts 20

If you would to provide some final counsel for some valiant priesthood leaders knowing that this is the last time you would ever be able to address them while also knowing -

"...that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them." (New Testament | Acts 20:29 - 30)

...What would you say? The counsel Paul gave seemed very wise and overall complete -

"Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood." (New Testament | Acts 20:28)

"Therefore watch, and remember..." (New Testament | Acts 20:31)

...basically all you have seen and learned.

"...brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified." (New Testament | Acts 20:32)

And finally to -

"...so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive." (New Testament | Acts 20:35)

What profound counsel.

Acts 19

It is always interesting to be to read history. I have come to believe that in many ways, things never seem to change. Paul had taught the Athenians of the purpose of this life in -

"That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him..." (New Testament | Acts 17:27)

But it seems that generally, manking makes no effort to seek Him or demonstrate faith in Him. It all comes down to "how does it temporally help me". We see it today in economical success, welfare benefits, political ambitions, religious control, and worldly desires. As Paul diligently taught the people of Ephesus -

"...the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds." (New Testament | Acts 19:17 - 18)

You would think that this would have no affect on the non-believers, but -

"...the same time there arose no small stir about that way.
24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;
25 Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.
26 Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:
27 So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth." (New Testament | Acts 19:23 - 27)

It seems the same things happen today, as the truth jeopardizes the desired wordly lifestype of many and with that comes persecution and intimidation.

Acts 18

It is evident that as Paul enters a new city our town, he would first teach the Jews in their synagogues. It is interesting that as Paul teaches in Corinth -

"...he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.
5 And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.
6 And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles." (New Testament | Acts 18:4 - 6)

Paul seemed so frustrated with this congregation, seeing no apparent conversion, that he basically gives up and seems to storm out. But what is interesting that not afterwards we read that Paul -

"...departed thence, and entered into a certain man's house, named Justus, one that worshipped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue." (New Testament | Acts 18:7)

And then -

"...Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized." (New Testament | Acts 18:8)

The point is that in our service we may feel we are getting no where. That our message is not being heard and we are not doing any good. But look at these results because of Paul's diligence, even as he felt a total failure. You never know what good you are doing as you diligently serve.

Acts 17

Having personally stood on Mars Hill, I find the discourse of Paul even more meaningful. He begins his discourse with the famous words -

"...Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you." (New Testament | Acts 17:22 - 23)

I understand a better interpretation of the word "superstitious" to the athenians should have been "philosophically religious". I believed Paul was more than aware of the greatness of the Greeks in previous generations but now realizes that they are now also under rule of the Romans. But what stands out in Paul's discourse is not necessarily his explanation of the one true God. But more our relationship with God for He -

"...hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation..." (New Testament | Acts 17:26)

There was a pre-existence with a pre-mortal plan of where and in what manner we were to live on this earth -

"For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device." (New Testament | Acts 17:28 - 29)

Being His offspring suggests more than other things that were created. The very definition of offspring is -

"...the product of the reproductive processes..." (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

We know we are not His physical offspring. There was but one, Only Begotten offspring. Therefore we would be His spiritual offspring in this pre-existant state. Being His offspring, Paul makes it clear of our duty within this plan -

"That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us..." (New Testament | Acts 17:27)

And as we find Him, He -

"...now commandeth all men every where to repent..." (New Testament | Acts 17:30)

Acts 16

We have been promised that -

"...if ye will enter in by the way, and receive the Holy Ghost, it will show unto you all things what ye should do." (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 32:5)

This doctrine could not seem more evident with missionary work of Paul and his companions. As he began his second mission -

"Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia..." (New Testament | Acts 16:6)

And even -

"After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not." (New Testament | Acts 16:7)

I see an inherent process in their work. It seems that these brethren proceeded to make a plan and then council on the matter. It seems apparent to me that they would then approach the Father in humble prayer if this be right. And if it was not according to the Lord's will, the Holy Ghost would forbid them. The scriptures do not suggest why they were forbidden, but what follows next would suggest there was a greater need elsewhere for -

"...a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us." (New Testament | Acts 16:9)

And it was in Philippi, that several individuals had been prepared to receive the gospel. This is a great example how the gospel should be administered.

Acts 15

It seems the ancient Church in the meridian of time had much of a the same problems as the modern Church as it began to grow. One of those was new members steeped in religious tradition or practices. It seemed to be a sensitive matter.

Many of the Christian Jews had been raised with Mosiac law and practices. Whole the gentile converts struggled with their own pagan rituals and traditions. There is no question that the Mosaic law was fulfilled with the atonement of the Savior. But many of those traditions were not necessarily wrong or unimportant. While Paul and Barnabus preached in Antioch -

"...certain men which came down from Judæa taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved." (New Testament | Acts 15:1)

This led to no small disputation. So Paul and Barnabus went to Jerusalem to receive instruction from their priesthood leaders. This same idea continued as, even in Jerusalem -

"...there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses." (New Testament | Acts 15:5)

But what is important is not the opinion of the members of the Church, for -

"...the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter." (New Testament | Acts 15:6)

It was these brethren that held priesthood keys with authority to receive revelation for the Church. We see the working of these keys as the presiding authority -

:...Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.
8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;
9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith." (New Testament | Acts 15:7 - 9)

And then by revelation, Peter declared -

"Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?
11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they." (New Testament | Acts 15:10 - 11)

It all came down to what was saving ordinances and what wasn't. What was essential commandments for salvation and what was only traditional. So, as if in an "Official Declaration" -

"... they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia:
24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment..." (New Testament | Acts 15:23 - 24)

I noticed that they were very senstitive in that they did not attempt to denounce Jewish tradition but only to stress that doctrine which was essentials.

No question that we can liken the scriptures unto ourselves.

Acts 14

We have a tendency to believe that if we are doing all we can in serving the Lord, that no harm should come upon us. I believe that we can in confidence call upon the protection of the Lord, but we also witness that as Paul and Barnabas did for a -

"Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands." (New Testament | Acts 14:3)

One would think that in all their diligence, that they would be protected. Later we learn that -

"...there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead." (New Testament | Acts 14:19)

Just like the Prophet Joseph Smith, Paul also was persecuted. It is difficult to even imagine being in the darkest of prisons or being stoned for Christ's sake. Of which the Savior said -

"...know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 122:7)

Acts 13

One of the Jews greatest faults was their pride and envy. Being children of Abraham brought a "greater than thou" or prideful attitude. It was very difficult for them to see that others are also children of God. After the Jews had heard the word in Antioch -

"...the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God." (New Testament | Acts 13:44)

Instead of rejoicing with their brethren -

"...when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming." (New Testament | Acts 13:45)

These things tend to follow prideful people. But -

"...Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.
47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.
48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed."
(New Testament | Acts 13:46 - 48)

Maybe because of pride, the Lord taught -

"...many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first." (New Testament | Matthew 19:30)

Acts 12

The Lord said in modern day -

"...in nothing doth man offend God, or against none is his wrath kindled, save those who confess not his hand in all things, and obey not his commandments." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 59:21)

Herod was a wicked and murderous king whom -

"...stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.
2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword." (New Testament | Acts 12:1 - 2)

But what seemed to bring about his final destruction was when the King of Tyre and Sidon wished to make peace with Herod -

"And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.
22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man." (New Testament | Acts 12:21 - 22)

It seemed this was the straw that broke the camels back -

"And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost." (New Testament | Acts 12:23)

Where we may fail the most is when we do not confess God's hand in all things.

Acts 11

Even though it was revealed to Peter taht -

"...Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons..." (New Testament | Acts 10:34)

It was also taught in the parable of the talents that the master -

"...gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability..." (New Testament | Matthew 25:15)

...suggesting in my mind that all men are not equal in abilities and that we will be judged what we do with our abilities. This would even extend to financial capabilities.

Through out the scriptures there is constant reference and expectations that the Lord's children are to care for the poor and the needy and administer to their relief. We see this being taught even amongst the early Christians in Antioch as -

"...the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judæa..." (New Testament | Acts 11:29)

To the Church of Christ -

"...Alma commanded that the people of the church should impart of their substance, every one according to that which he had; if he have more abundantly he should impart more abundantly; and of him that had but little, but little should be required; and to him that had not should be given.
28 And thus they should impart of their substance of their own free will and good desires towards God, and to those priests that stood in need, yea, and to every needy, naked soul." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 18:27 - 28)

King Benjamin taught -

"... if God, who has created you, on whom you are dependent for your lives and for all that ye have and are, doth grant unto you whatsoever ye ask that is right, in faith, believing that ye shall receive, O then, how ye ought to impart of the substance that ye have one to another.
22 And if ye judge the man who putteth up his petition to you for your substance that he perish not, and condemn him, how much more just will be your condemnation for withholding your substance, which doth not belong to you but to God, to whom also your life belongeth; and yet ye put up no petition, nor repent of the thing which thou hast done.
23 I say unto you, wo be unto that man, for his substance shall perish with him; and now, I say these things unto those who are rich as pertaining to the things of this world.
24 And again, I say unto the poor, ye who have not and yet have sufficient, that ye remain from day to day; I mean all you who deny the beggar, because ye have not; I would that ye say in your hearts that: I give not because I have not, but if I had I would give." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 4:21 - 24)

We are to consecrate our time, talents, and means according to our abilities.

Acts 10

The Lord said to the children of Israel -

"Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets." (Old Testament | Amos 3:7)

There is no question, that because of covenants made, the Savior's mission was to the House of Israel. The Savior so declared, as the gentile woman approached Him of her daughter vexed with a devil, saying -

"...I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel." (New Testament | Matthew 15:24)

Even the woman at the well understood this saying -

"...How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans." (New Testament | John 4:9)

It becomes clear that there are times and seasons in fulfilling the purposes of God. It is obvious, the the gospel was first to be taught tot he house of Israel. Gentiles were exclude - at lease for a season. Now with the change in season to take place in the preaching of the gospel to all nations, the Lord declared He would reveal His will through His prophets.

There is not question that Peter was the leader or President of the Church, or prophet. Cornelius was instructed to go to Peter and none else. To Peter it was then revealed that -

"...Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons..."
(New Testament | Acts 10:34)

"But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)" (New Testament | Acts 10:35 - 36)

Understanding this event, does it not somewhat sound reasonabe that the Lord would, for His own reason purposes, withhold certain blessings for another group for a season. It was again through a prophet of God, just as Peter, the following revelation was given -

" Dear Brethren:
6 As we have witnessed the expansion of the work of the Lord over the earth, we have been grateful that people of many nations have responded to the message of the restored gospel, and have joined the Church in ever-increasing numbers. This, in turn, has inspired us with a desire to extend to every worthy member of the Church all of the privileges and blessings which the gospel affords.
7 Aware of the promises made by the prophets and presidents of the Church who have preceded us that at some time, in God's eternal plan, all of our brethren who are worthy may receive the priesthood, and witnessing the faithfulness of those from whom the priesthood has been withheld, we have pleaded long and earnestly in behalf of these, our faithful brethren, spending many hours in the Upper Room of the Temple supplicating the Lord for divine guidance.
8 He has heard our prayers, and by revelation has confirmed that the long-promised day has come when every faithful, worthy man in the Church may receive the holy priesthood, with power to exercise its divine authority, and enjoy with his loved ones every blessing that flows therefrom, including the blessings of the temple. Accordingly, all worthy male members of the Church may be ordained to the priesthood without regard for race or color. Priesthood leaders are instructed to follow the policy of carefully interviewing all candidates for ordination to either the Aaronic or the Melchizedek Priesthood to insure that they meet the established standards for worthiness.
9 We declare with soberness that the Lord has now made known his will for the blessing of all his children throughout the earth who will hearken to the voice of his authorized servants, and prepare themselves to receive every blessing of the gospel.
10 Sincerely yours,

SPENCER W. KIMBALL
N. ELDON TANNER

Acts 9

Humility seems to be a essential attribute to represent the Savior and receive His blessings. Though most Christians marvel at the vision of Saul on the road to Damascus, what seemed to impress me more was how Saul reacted to this vision. I note that after Saul reached Damascus, Saul not only was obedient to the instruction of the Savior, but also -

"...he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink." (New Testament | Acts 9:9)

Saul was a faithful Jew and it is apparent to me that he understood the Law of the Fast. And not only did Saul fast for guidance, but Ananias was told -

"...Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth..." (New Testament | Acts 9:11)

In other words, Saul was deep in fasting and prayer. And because of that Saul -

"...hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight." (New Testament | Acts 9:12)

And I believe because of humble fasting and prayer -

"...Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.
18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized." (New Testament | Acts 9:17 - 18)

Priesthood blessings follow those who diligently seek, fast, and pray.

Acts 8

We are taught in modern day revelation that -

"...in the church, two priesthoods, namely, the Melchizedek and Aaronic, including the Levitical Priesthood." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 107:1

"...the first is called the Melchizedek Priesthood is because Melchizedek was such a great high priest." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 107:2)

And -

"The second priesthood is called the Priesthood of Aaron, because it was conferred upon Aaron and his seed, throughout all their generations.
14 Why it is called the lesser priesthood is because it is an appendage to the greater, or the Melchizedek Priesthood, and has power in administering outward ordinances." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 107:13 - 14)

This doctrine becomes very apparent as the Samaritans, -

"...when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women." (New Testament | Acts 8:12)

It is clear with the Samaritans and with the Ethiopian Eunuch, that Phillip possessed priesthood authority to baptize. But we witness the differences of priesthood authority as it was necessary that -

"...when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost." (New Testament | Acts 8:14 - 17)

What is interesting is that there is also suggested a third priesthood, but in this case, not of God, but the priesthood of the advesary, as -

"...a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:
10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God." (New Testament | Acts 8:9 - 10)

Nephi called this representation, priestcraft where -

"...priestcrafts are that men preach and set themselves up for a light unto the world, that they may get gain and praise of the world; but they seek not the welfare of Zion." (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 26:29)

This again becomes apparent as -

"...Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost." (New Testament | Acts 8:18 - 19)

In that it was apparent that Simon's motives were wicked -

"Because their hearts are set so much upon the things of this world, and aspire to the honors of men..." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 121:35)

Peter responded -

"...Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.
22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee." (New Testament | Acts 8:20 - 22)

It becomes clear with this experience that there are two distinct priesthoods and a third as a false imitation.

Acts 7

I commented several days ago how when one is "filled with the Holy Ghost" and thus receives a testimony, they seem to develop a sense of boldness in testifying of the truth. We find this with -

"...Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people." (New Testament | Acts 6:8)

And while in defense before the Sanhedrin -

"...all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel." (New Testament | Acts 6:15)

And with this evidence of being filled with the Holy Ghost, Stephen recounts the history of the children of Abraham and their continual rejection of the Lord's anointed while pursuing the lusts of their heart (as with the golden calf). And then in all boldness, Stephen challenges these Jewish rulers -

"Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:
53 Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it." (New Testament | Acts 7:51 - 53)

...suggesting in all their arrogance, they were no different from many of their ancestors. Being accused of this truth -

"When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth." (New Testament | Acts 7:54)

I can't help but make a comparison on our day as the truth cuts to the heart of many religious leaders (those that profess to believe the words of Stephen), and instead of humility and repentance, there generally is gnashing of teeth. The Prophet Joseph Smith related -

"...after I had this vision, I happened to be in company with one of the Methodist preachers, who was very active in the before mentioned religious excitement; and, conversing with him on the subject of religion, I took occasion to give him an account of the vision which I had had. I was greatly surprised at his behavior; he treated my communication not only lightly, but with great contempt, saying it was all of the devil, that there were no such things as visions or revelations in these days; that all such things had ceased with the apostles, and that there would never be any more of them.
22 I soon found, however, that my telling the story had excited a great deal of prejudice against me among professors of religion, and was the cause of great persecution, which continued to increase; and though I was an obscure boy, only between fourteen and fifteen years of age, and my circumstances in life such as to make a boy of no consequence in the world, yet men of high standing would take notice sufficient to excite the public mind against me, and create a bitter persecution; and this was common among all the sects—all united to persecute me.
23 It caused me serious reflection then, and often has since, how very strange it was that an obscure boy, of a little over fourteen years of age, and one, too, who was doomed to the necessity of obtaining a scanty maintenance by his daily labor, should be thought a character of sufficient importance to attract the attention of the great ones of the most popular sects of the day, and in a manner to create in them a spirit of the most bitter persecution and reviling. But strange or not, so it was, and it was often the cause of great sorrow to myself.
24 However, it was nevertheless a fact that I had beheld a vision. I have thought since, that I felt much like Paul, when he made his defense before King Agrippa, and related the account of the vision he had when he saw a light, and heard a voice; but still there were but few who believed him; some said he was dishonest, others said he was mad; and he was ridiculed and reviled. But all this did not destroy the reality of his vision. He had seen a vision, he knew he had, and all the persecution under heaven could not make it otherwise; and though they should persecute him unto death, yet he knew, and would know to his latest breath, that he had both seen a light and heard a voice speaking unto him, and all the world could not make him think or believe otherwise.
25 So it was with me. I had actually seen a light, and in the midst of that light I saw two Personages, and they did in reality speak to me; and though I was hated and persecuted for saying that I had seen a vision, yet it was true; and while they were persecuting me, reviling me, and speaking all manner of evil against me falsely for so saying, I was led to say in my heart: Why persecute me for telling the truth? I have actually seen a vision; and who am I that I can withstand God, or why does the world think to make me deny what I have actually seen? For I had seen a vision; I knew it, and I knew that God knew it, and I could not deny it, neither dared I do it; at least I knew that by so doing I would offend God, and come under condemnation." Acts 6

One of the problems the Jewish leaders had was that they were so steeped in tradition, that they could or would not hear and heed new revelaton.

During His ministry, the Savior organized His Church with apostles and prophets, being lead by Peter, James, as John - an apparent presidency. As it is recorded multiple times that these brethren were filled with the Holy Ghost, it is apparent that they were receiving continual revelation of the Lord's will concerning the administration of His Church. At a time when -

"...the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration." (New Testament | Acts 6:1)

This left these brethren with a dilemma of what to do having been commissioned to preach the gospel to all nations. They pondered -

"It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables." (New Testament | Acts 6:2)

And then, by revelation and guidance, deviating what some may consider traditional organization, they proposed -

"...brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.
4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word." (New Testament | Acts 6:3 - 4)

In this manner to work continued. We witness much the same process throughout the early organization of the modern Church providing more and more leadership and growth opportunities for its members.

A brief review of the establishment of the Relief Society, Primary, Young Women, and Young Men auxilaries and their relationship to the priesthood and the work, followed much the same pattern. "Line upon line and precept upon precept" as needs arose.

Acts 5

As I read of the Acts of the apostles in organization, revelations, and growth of the Church in the meridian of time, I can't help but recognize and compare the same great similarities and challenges in modern day.
As the Jewish rulers found that they could not even contain the apostles in prison for -

"...the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth..." (New Testament | Acts 5:19)

Even such that -

"...when the officers came, and found them not in the prison, they returned, and told,
23 Saying, The prison truly found we shut with all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within." (New Testament | Acts 5:22 - 23)

As these ruler plotted again to kill the apostles, wise Gamealiel, a Pharisee and one of great reputation, opined -

"...Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men." (New Testament | Acts 5:35)

After noting several other uprising of different groups had failed, he said -

"...now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:
39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God." (New Testament | Acts 5:38 - 39)

How true that if it be God, you cannot overthrow it. So it is in modern day. Daniel saw and the Lord later emphasized that -

"...keys of the kingdom of God are committed unto man on the earth, and from thence shall the gospel roll forth unto the ends of the earth, as the stone which is cut out of the mountain without hands shall roll forth, until it has filled the whole earth." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 65:2)

I know that this work is of God and will not come to nought but will fill the earth.

Acts 4

As Peter and John, after being placed in jail and then being brought before the high priest and all his kindred, they were asked because they had healed a lame man from birth -

"...By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?" (New Testament | Acts 4:7)

"Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them..." (New Testament | Acts 4:8)

"...by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead..." (New Testament | Acts 4:10)

What I found interesting was the reaction of the religous rulers -

"Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus." (New Testament | Acts 4:13)

I remember while serving in the mission field receiving a distinct and clear revelation, by the power of the Holy Ghost, of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon, the calling of the Prophet Joseph Smith, and of greatest importance, that Jesus was the Christ. From that day on, things changed. Being now also "filled with the Holy Ghost", I as never so "bold" in testifying of what I knew was true. The boldness of Peter and John was not the result of bravery, but being filled with the Holy Ghost possessing of testimony of its truth.

Acts 3

As a young missionary, I used to quote Peter -

"Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began." (New Testament | Acts 3:19 - 21)

I understood his prophecy that "the heavens must receive until the times of restitution of all things". In that before His second coming, all things would need to be restored.

What I didn't understand was the charge to repent and be converted that "their" sins my be blotted out when the "times of refreshing" would come. According to Peter, the "times of refreshing" would take place with the presence of the Lord. This would suggest that this would take place with His second coming. Maybe better considered, during the millenium.

But why would Peter only instruct the individuals that he is speaking to, to repent and be converted suggesting that their sins would only be blotted out at the "times of refreshing"? I realized this morning to whom he was speaking. He had already said -

"...ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you..." (New Testament | Acts 3:14)

Peter was talking to those that had cried "crucify him". These were those that had the blood of the Savior of the world on their hands. To these, Peter even suggested -

"...I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers..." (New Testament | Acts 3:17)

I now believe that those that participated in this murderous request, may only have their sins blotted out through sincere repentance and conversion, and at a future date which would literally be a "times of refreshing". Of this event, the Prophet Joseph Smith taught -

"The time of redemption here [Acts 3:19-20] had reference to the time when Christ should come; then, and not till then, would their sins be blotted out. Why? Because they were murderers, and no murderer hath eternal life. Even David must wait for those times of refreshing, before he can come forth and his sins be blotted out. For Peter, speaking of him says, "David hath not yet ascended into heaven, for his sepulchre is with us to this day." His remains were then in the tomb. Now, we read that many bodies of the Saints arose at Christ's resurrection, probably all the Saints, but it seems that David did not. Why? Because he had been a murderer. If the ministers of religion had a proper understanding of the doctrine of eternal judgment, they would not be found attending the man who forfeited his life to the injured laws of his country, by shedding innocent blood; for such characters cannot be forgiven, until they have paid the last farthing. The prayers of all the ministers in the world can never close the gates of hell against a murderer." (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 4:359

Acts 2

Before the resurrection of the Savior, it is more than apparent that there were none other that had sufficient power to rise from the dead. John declared -

"...Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power..." (New Testament | Revelation 5:12)

Because of His divinity and through the atonement, the Savior received sufficient power to rise from the dead. Peter explained on the day of pentacost of the Savior -

"Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it." (New Testament | Acts 2:24)

Meaning that He held sufficient power to overcome the world of the spirits of the dead to rise again where no other could. And not only did He now possess such power but also -

"...shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings..." (Old Testament | Malachi 4:2)

...with sufficient power that all may live again. This is evident as Peter shared the words of David as David came to understand -

"Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell..." (New Testament | Acts 2:26 - 27)

...or in other words, leave my soul is prison in the world of spirits of the dead -

"For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive." (New Testament | 1 Corinthians 15:22)
