Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

1 Timothy 2

Speaking of the Savior, Paul taught Timothy the doctrine -

"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus..." (New Testament | 1 Timothy 2:5)

By definition, a mediator is -

"...one that mediates between parties at variance or one that brings accord out of by action..." Merriam-Webster

First, we know that our Father in Heaven is perfect and -

"...cannot look upon sin with the least degree of allowance..." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 1:31)

So in my mind, "to bring accord out of action" would be to atone or reconcile us to the Father (bringing us in line with our covenants) - something we could never do on our own. Therefore it is by His grace and mediation that we are saved for His is -

"Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time." (New Testament | 1 Timothy 2:6)

In my mind, "to be testified in due time" would be -

"...that every tongue [will] confess that Jesus Christ..." (New Testament | Philippians 2:11)

2 Thessalonians 3

Paul concludes his epistle to Thessalonia with -

"Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us." (New Testament | 2 Thessalonians 3:6)

One type of being disorderly is where someone is not self reliant or lazy as Paul explains -

"For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;
8 Neither did we eat any man's bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you..." (New Testament | 2 Thessalonians 3:7 - 8)

"For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat." (New Testament | 2 Thessalonians 3:10)

"For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies." (New Testament | 2 Thessalonians 3:11)

Of such, Paul provides priesthood leaders the following help and counsel -

"Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.
13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.
14 And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.
15 Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother." (New Testament | 2 Thessalonians 3:12 - 15)

The scriptures seem to have all the answers.

1 Thessalonians 4

After having exhorted the saints in Thessalonia on -

"...how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.
2 For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 4:1 - 2)

Including avoiding lust and all forms of immorality -

"That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour..." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 4:4)

"For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 4:7)

To be holy, Paul teaches how to live in holiness, or as saints suggesting that as saints -

"Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 5:5)

Therefore, to be holy or a saint -

"...we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 5:14)

"See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good..." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 5:15)

"Pray without ceasing." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 5:17)

"In every thing give thanks..." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 5:18)

"Despise not prophesyings." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 5:20)

Or in other words, those that teach and testify of Jesus Christ -

"Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 5:21)

I think "prove" means to receive confirmations of the Holy Ghost.

And even -

Abstain from all appearance of evil." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 5:22)

This is what it means to strive for holiness.

1 Thessalonians 2

Between two seperate epistles, we learn a great deal about missionary work. To the Colossians, Paul first counsels -

"Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time." (New Testament | Colossians 4:5)

In my mind, redeeming the time would suggest being patient and prepared for any appopriate opportunity to share and testify of the gospel of Jesus Christ remembering -

"For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance..." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 1:5)

For it is not the teachings of man but the witness and power of the Holy Ghost that one comes to know the truth for -

"...ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost..." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 1:6)

Using himself as an example, Paul teaches how the gospel should be preached for -

"...we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 2:2)

"Much contention" meaning opposition in this case, not the spirit of contention -

"For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile..." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 2:3)

We don't try to manipulate people into believing -

"But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.
5 For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness..." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 2:4 - 5)

Using human emotions goes right along with flattering words. It is not emotions that convert but the Holy Ghost. And with teaching also comes living by example for -

"Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe..." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 2:10)

Paul, understanding how true conversion takes place explains -

"For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 2:13)

But, nonetheless, just as the Sons of Mosiah also testified, Paul testifies -

"For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?
20 For ye are our glory and joy." (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 2:19 - 20)

Colossians 2

Paul taught the Romans -

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (New Testament | Romans 6:23)

There is no question that sin causes spiritual death. But I wonder if Paul is comparing "death" to true and complete repentance which requires "Godly sorrow" in -

"...that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation..." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 7:9 - 10)

It seems to me that Paul uses the analogy of death for repentance teaching -

"For we which live are alway[s] delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 4:11)

Paul taught the Colossians -
that -

"...in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses..."
(New Testament | Colossians 2:11 - 13)

Baptism is the ordinance that represents death and in conjuction with repentance we come forth "reborn". In such rebirth comes the -

"Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross..." (New Testament | Colossians 2:14)

That is why Paul teaches us -

"Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;
22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?" (New Testament | Colossians 2:20 - 22)

In other words, we need to repent unto death (Godly sorrow) if we have followed the philosophies or wickedness of men. Therefore -

"Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience..." (New Testament | Colossians 3:5 - 6)

And -

"...put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth." (New Testament | Colossians 3:8)

For -

"...he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons." (New Testament | Colossians 3:25)

Colossians 1

In my mind, it is apparent that as Paul initially preached the divinity of Christ, he also taught the gospel plan or the plan of salvation, being where we came from, why we are here, and the potential of where we may go. It is apparent to me as he writes his epistles he touches on these teachings knowing the saints already have been taught such.

We see this as he introduced the plan on Mars' hill teaching -

"For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring." (New Testament | Acts 17:28)

To be His "offspring" would suggest that we lived before this life and were His spiritual offspring. As Paul writes the Colossians, he teaches attributes of the Savior writing -

"In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
15 Who is the image of the invisible God..." (New Testament | Colossians 1:14 - 15)

Or in other words, the image of His Father or our Father in Heaven, or the Father of our spirits. And then Paul teaches the doctrine that Christ is -
"...the firstborn of every creature..." (New Testament | Colossians 1:15)

It becomes obvious that being the "firstborn" must have taken place before His birth into mortal life for in mortal life He was -

"...the only begotten of the Father..." (New Testament | John 1:14)

It is even more clear that this birth took place before his mortal existence because Paul explains -

"For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist." (New Testament | Colossians 1:16 - 17)

Obviously, if Christ was the firstborn offspring, and we are also our Father in Heaven's offspring, we are spiritually related. But we also must clearly understand that He was called to be the Christ, the Redeemer of all, and that by Him and through Him, only by His grace may we be blessed with Eternal life. Thus, He becomes our father in the sense that He provides us life or Eternal life. Thus we honor and worship Him - for eternity.

This doctrine and gospel plan was taught from the beginning where Paul acknowledges -

"Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;
26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:
27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory..."
(New Testament | Colossians 1:25 - 27)

Philippians 2

Speaking of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Paul writes -

"...Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God..." (New Testament | Philippians 2:5 - 6)

Being equal to God does not necessarily suggest that our Father in Heaven wil cease to be His or the Saviors allegiane to the Father will change. I know in my life, I have become somewhat equal to my father in wealth, knowledge, and experience. But nonetheless, he is my earthly father and I will forever honor him as so. Being children the Father has promised those who satisfy all the conditions of the oath and covenant of the priesthood -

"...all that my Father hath shall be given unto him." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 84:38)

Would this not suggest some form of equality. Because of the faithfulness of the Savior in atoning for all the Father's children -

"...God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth..." (New Testament | Philippians 2:9 - 10)

Understanding also the potential of all the Father's children, Paul desires -

"If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead."
(New Testament | Philippians 3:11)

Some might intepret that desire that not all will be resurrected. But Paul has already taught that -

"...in Christ shall all be made alive." (New Testament | 1 Corinthians 15:22)

The Prophet Joseph Smith translated this same verse as -

"If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the just."
(JST - New Testament | Philippians 3:11)

Now that makes sense in the resurrection of the just will be those that will receive Celestial bodies and glory as taught to the Corinthians. It will be the just that "all that my Father hath shall be given unto him."

Paul recognizes that he is not quite there yet but is diligently striving for it as he confesses -

"Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.
16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.
17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample." (New Testament | Philippians 3:12 - 17)

My hope, just as Paul is a great example, that I continue to strive to be worthy to "attain the resurrection of the just."

Ephesians 5

To those that think a verbal acceptance of Jesus Christ is all that is requried should pay close attention to Paul's words to the Ephesians -

"BE ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God." (New Testament | Ephesians 5:1 - 5)

And with that, he turns to the covenant of marriage saying -

"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord." (New Testament | Ephesians 5:22)

For many, this statement seems controversial. But all seems to make much more sense as we read the previous verse -

"Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God." (New Testament | Ephesians 5:21)

So it is obvious that this is a two-way street. In modern day, prophets have called this being "equally yoked". Paul continues, understanding the doctrine of the priesthood saying -

"For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing." (New Testament | Ephesians 5:23 - 24)

Suggesting the husband "is the head" would mean that he is to preside which would also mean -

"...he that is greatest among you shall be your servant." (New Testament | Matthew 23:11)

This what the Savior taught as he is the head of the Church. This principles becomes even more clear as Paul writes -

"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it..." (New Testament | Ephesians 5:25)

This love of Christ for the Church was -

"That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish." (New Testament | Ephesians 5:26 - 27)

He did not do so by compulsion or force, he did it with love.

"So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church..." (New Testament | Ephesians 5:28 - 29)

This concept is totally opposite the worlds beliefs that the man is to rule over the woman. As husbands learn to love their wife and their children, as the Savior loved the Church, they become more Christ-like, which helps explains a portion of the plan of salvation -

"For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh." (New Testament | Ephesians 5:31)

One flesh who not only be physical, but a again, having unity in administering to the needs of each other and the family. Paul concluded -

"...let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband." (New Testament | Ephesians 5:33)

I also read chapter six this morning and again, for those that believe that all we have to do is express of verbal belief and we are saved should listen to the following instructions of Paul -

"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints..." (New Testament | Ephesians 6:10 - 18)

These words would suggest that there are more conditions, requirements, and work to to obtain an -

"...inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God." (New Testament | Ephesians 5:5)

Ephesians 4

As Paul writes the Ephesians, he reminds them of the structure and organization of the Church as well as the purpose of the Church, first teaching -

"...he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers..." (New Testament | Ephesians 4:11)

Then explaining the very purpose of Church organizations and callings -

"For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ..." (New Testament | Ephesians 4:12 - 13)

I would submit that purpose has not yet been fulfilled in that the saints are still striving toward "perfect [men], unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ". And thus this Church organization is still needed so -

"That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:" (New Testament | Ephesians 4:14 - 15)

Therefore Paul counseled -

I THEREFORE, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation [or calling] wherewith ye are called,
2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love..." (New Testament | Ephesians 4:1 - 2)

"And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." (New Testament | Ephesians 4:32)

Ephesians 3

The Lord

As the Lord taught Moses His plan for the salvation of all His children, He explains -

"...only an account of this earth, and the inhabitants thereof, give I unto you. For behold, there are many worlds that have passed away by the word of my power. And there are many that now stand, and innumerable are they unto man; but all things are numbered unto me, for they are mine and I know them." (Pearl of Great Price | Moses 1:35)

Paul teaches much the same doctrine that the Lord knows each of us by name -

"For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man..." (New Testament | Ephesians 3:14 - 16)

What a wonderful truth, that the "Father of our Lord Jesus Christ" knows our name and who we are. And not only that, that He loves us and wants to grant the "riches of his Glory" to each of His children. Is it any wonder that He has taught and instructed the same principles to the leaders of His Church that -

"...after they had been received unto baptism, and were wrought upon and cleansed by the power of the Holy Ghost, they were numbered among the people of the church of Christ; and their names were taken, that they might be remembered and nourished by the good word of God, to keep them in the right way, to keep them continually watchful unto prayer, relying alone upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and the finisher of their faith." (Book of Mormon | Moroni 6:4)

We are all numbered and named in God's eye.

Ephesians 2

As in his previous writings the Jewish converts, Paul again reminds them -

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast." (New Testament | Ephesians 2:8 - 9)

Again, there needed to be constant reminder to these converts that man could not be saved by the law of Moses. Over the years, the Jews continually generated more and more strict comformances to this law with the idea that they could save themselves by the law. But this is not true. We are only saved by grace. But that doesn't mean that all we have to do is declare belief and we are automatically saved. Paul continues -

"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." (New Testament | Ephesians 2:10)

If all we had to do is declare a belief, why then hath God "ordained that we should walk in them" or in other words, keep his commandments. Why then must we be "reconciled" to God as Paul previously taught. Reconciled in my mind would suggest that we have come to the agreement of satisfying all requirements.

It is by obedience to the commandments that we become worthy to receive the Spirit or the Holy Ghost to witness and revealt to our souls the truth of all things for by doing so -

"...ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit." (New Testament | Ephesians 2:19 - 22)

Galatians 6

As the Lord revealed His modern-day Word of Wisdom, he promised -

"...all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments...shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 89:18 - 20)

At first, one might assume this promise would be a blessing of health, but recalling the words of Isaiah, we read -

"...the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary..."(Old Testament | Isaiah 40:28)

And -

"...they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." (Old Testament | Isaiah 40:31)

I don't think the Lord has a issue of health. I believe when the Lord does not faint or is weary means that we can always depend on Him. I believe that is what is also meant of those that wait upon the Lord. This becomes much clearer with Paul's writing to the Galatians in that -

"...he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." (New Testament | Galatians 6:8 - 9)

As we have faith in Christ and "wait upon the Lord", we sahll be strengthen. We will not be weary in well doing and will not faint in striving to do so.

Galatians 4

As some of the converted Galatians began to return to the law of Moses, Paul compares the two as being free versus being in bondage asking -

"...now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?" (New Testament | Galatians 4:9)

After comparing the law of Moses to Abraham's bondmaid and the gospel of Jesus Christ to Sarah as a freewomen or one or the promise of "joint-heir", Paul instructs -

"...Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.
31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free." (New Testament | Galatians 4:30 - 31)

For -

"...we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise." (New Testament | Galatians 4:28)

And then Paul teaches what it really means to be "children of promise" or "joint-heirs" to being in bondage -

"STAND fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage." (New Testament | Galatians 5:1)

He compares the yoke of bondage to the natural man or the works of the flesh teaching -

"Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law." (New Testament | Galatians 5:16 - 18)

Being in the yoke of bondage or not keeping the commandments keeps one from being a "joint-heir" for -

"...the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God." (New Testament | Galatians 5:19 - 21)

Including being -

"...desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another." (New Testament | Galatians 5:26)

What is liberty or being free? It is to "walk in the Spirit" or live such that you have the Holy Ghost for -

"...the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts." (New Testament | Galatians 5:22 - 24)

Therfore -

"If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." (New Testament | Galatians 5:25)

This is what is meant by having faith in Christ!

Galatians 3

The gospel or doctrine of Jesus Christ was taught from the beginning. Yet the Jews continued to fall back believing "the law" or the law of Moses was all that was required for salvation. To which questioned -

" O FOOLISH Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?" (New Testament | Galatians 3:1 - 2)

Paul then recounts the gospel in the beginning and how the law of Moses came forth. First, Paul recounts that Abraham received the gospel of Jesus Christ by the Spirit, long before the Israelites received the law of Moses teaching -

"Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham." (New Testament | Galatians 3:6 - 7)

Being Abraham's children would mean receiving all the blessings of Abraham or "being joint-heirs" with Abraham for -

"So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham." (New Testament | Galatians 3:9)

Paul teaches that all the blessings (exaltation) of the covenant with Abraham -

"...might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.
16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ." (New Testament | Galatians 3:14 - 16)

Paul teaches that the covenant made with Abraham could not be broken. Moses came years afterwards and the Lord would not then make a higher law or break the covenant with Abraham such that the law -

"...cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise." (New Testament | Galatians 3:17 - 18)

Why then was the law of Moses given. Because the Israelites were far from prepared to live according the gospel of Jesus Christ, therefore -

"...the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith." (New Testament | Galatians 3:24)

The purpose was that eventually -

"...after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise." (New Testament | Galatians 3:25 - 29)

Many confuse "law" or Mosaic law with commandments. There are lessor commandments and greater commandents requiring faith in Jesus Christ. That is why -

"Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." (New Testament | Galatians 3:6)

Galatians 1

Paul reveals a great deal of incite how he came to understand the doctrine of Jesus Christ testifying -

"...I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ." (New Testament | Galatians 1:11 - 12)

When did much of this "revelation" take place? I believe Paul again tells us that after his vision on the road to Damascus that -

"...immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:
17 Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus.
18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days." (New Testament | Galatians 1:16 - 18)

I believe that Paul, so deep in Jewish training, buried himself deep in the fasting, prayer, and the scriptures to come to an understanding that the Mosaice law that was so embraced was but a "schoolmaster" for the Jews to come to faith in Jesus Christ and that the "law" did not provide salvation. By revelation, he came to understand this so strongly that -

"...when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.
12 For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision." (New Testament | Galatians 2:11 - 12)

There is no question that Peter understood the gospel was to be preached to the gentiles, but when he was amongst the Jews, he seemed to sustain their tradition of the Mosaic law. Paul does not mention this, but I believe Peter, being the leader and president of the Church, probably acknowledged his human error, knowing the truth, and agreed with Paul. It is herein that Paul teaches the Galations this pure truth -

"Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified." (New Testament | Galatians 2:16)

This is where many become confused where they misunderstand that in referring to the "law", Paul is not referring to the commandments. Paul is referring to the Mosaic law that does not have power unto salvation. Nephi taught the same doctrine before the coming of Christ -

"...notwithstanding we believe in Christ, we keep the law of Moses, and look forward with steadfastness unto Christ, until the law shall be fulfilled.
25 For, for this end was the law given; wherefore the law hath become dead unto us, and we are made alive in Christ because of our faith; yet we keep the law because of the commandments.
26 And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.
27 Wherefore, we speak concerning the law that our children may know the deadness of the law; and they, by knowing the deadness of the law, may look forward unto that life which is in Christ, and know for what end the law was given. And after the law is fulfilled in Christ, that they need not harden their hearts against him when the law ought to be done away." (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 25:24 - 27)

"...behold, I say unto you that the right way is to believe in Christ, and deny him not; and Christ is the Holy One of Israel; wherefore ye must bow down before him, and worship him with all your might, mind, and strength, and your whole soul; and if ye do this ye shall in nowise be cast out.
30 And, inasmuch as it shall be expedient, ye must keep the performances and ordinances of God until the law shall be fulfilled which was given unto Moses." (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 25:29 - 30)

2 Corinthians 12

Moroni taught the words of the Lord -

"...if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them." (Book of Mormon | Ether 12:27)

Paul taught this same doctrine concerning himself describing -

"...yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities.
6 For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.
7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 12:5 - 7)

I'm sure there has been a great deal of speculation what this "thorn in the flesh" was, but Paul doesn't revealt that. Only that -

"For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 12:8 - 9)

Paul may not necessarily understood why this particular affliction, but he did understand and had faith in the Lord that it was for his good. Then, just as Moroni, he declares -

"Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 12:10)

This humility is even reflected in his Church calling -

"I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 12:11)

2 Corinthians 11

Having admitted that in previous letters that he had been quite bold and hard on the saints in Corinth, Paul, in somewhat more softness, warns -

"...I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 11:3 - 4)

I hope to be sensitive, but I feel it is quite ironic that other Christian denominations you this scripture to suggest that the restored Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is one that "preacheth another Jesus". But the more I read the New Testament, the more I believe we do teach the true Jesus. It is interesting that Paul, an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ says "whom we have not preached". What other organization preacheth Jesus that have been ordained an apostle of the Lord. Think about it. I hope to not offend, but I believe that other Christians churches may be those that "preach another Jesus" or variations of His doctrine.

2 Corinthians 8

As Paul taught the doctrine -

"...behold, thou wilt remember the poor, and consecrate of thy properties for their support that which thou hast to impart unto them, with a covenant and a deed which cannot be broken.
31 And inasmuch as ye impart of your substance unto the poor, ye will do it unto me..." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 42:30 - 31)

He wrote to the Corinthians -

"...if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 8:12)

Explaining -

"For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened..." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 8:13)

And then he teaches a principle that I am not sure is clearly understood -

"But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality..." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 8:14)

I think most people would assume that equality would be in quantity of possessions, but I believe when he writes for "their" and "your" want, I think is is suggesting equal opportunity and desires. We learn in modern day, Bishop Partridge was commanded -

"...appoint unto this people their portions, every man equal according to his family, according to his circumstances and his wants and needs." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 51:3)

In this case equal does not suggest equal in quantity. As we contemplate our obligations -

"...that ye must visit the poor and the needy and administer to their relief..." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 44:6)

We should also consider that which Paul taught that -

"...He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.
7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work..."
(New Testament | 2 Corinthians 9:6 - 8)

For -

"...he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;)
11 Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 9:10 - 11)

2 Corinthians 7

As one considers the teaching of Paul -

"Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified." (New Testament | Galatians 2:16)

One must also consider this teaching -

"Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner...
10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 7:9 - 10)

It is Godly sorrow that worketh repentance unto salvation. Combining both verses, one must believe that we are justified as we have faith in Christ and truly repent of our sins. For as we do we become a new creature, or His sons and daughters -

" For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort [God's way], what carefulness [sincerely] it wrought in you, yea, what clearing [cleansing] of yourselves, yea, what indignation [regret sin], yea, what fear [recognizing the justice of God], yea, what vehement desire [to change ones heart], yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge [recognition of potential punishment]! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 7:11)

I believe these principles with the ordinances of baptism and receiving the Holy Ghost, is the very doctrine of Christ.

2 Corinthians 6

In modern day, the Lord commanded -

"...prepare ye, prepare ye, O my people; sanctify yourselves; gather ye together, O ye people of my church, upon the land of Zion, all you that have not been commanded to tarry.
5 Go ye out from Babylon. Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 133:4 - 5)

Paul taught the Corinthians the same -

"Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 6:17)

And not only will He receive us but -

"...will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 6:18)

Having taught the plan of redemption, King Benjamin hears that his people -

"...are willing to enter into a covenant with our God to do his will, and to be obedient to his commandments in all things that he shall command us, all the remainder of our days..." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 5:5)

And because they were willing to do so, to covenant to seperate themselves from the world and touch not any unclean thing, King Benjamin explains -

"...now, because of the covenant which ye have made ye shall be called the children of Christ, his sons, and his daughters; for behold, this day he hath spiritually begotten you; for ye say that your hearts are changed through faith on his name; therefore, ye are born of him and have become his sons and his daughters." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 5:7)

It becomes clear that in order to be spiritually begotten of him, to receive the blessings of the atonement, to become His sons and His daughters, we must repent, seperate ourselves from the world, and live righteous and virtuous lives according to His commandments.

2 Corinthians 5

Paul taught -

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 5:17)

As Alma repented and regained his strenght, he declared -

"I have repented of my sins, and have been redeemed of the Lord; behold I am born of the Spirit.
25 And the Lord said unto me: Marvel not that all mankind, yea, men and women, all nations, kindreds, tongues and people, must be born again; yea, born of God, changed from their carnal and fallen state, to a state of righteousness, being redeemed of God, becoming his sons and daughters;
26 And thus they become new creatures; and unless they do this, they can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 27:24 - 26)

It is apparent that repentance is a condition that must be satisfied in order to be redeemed of the Lord. "Thus becoming a new creature". To become a "new creature", one must repent or as Paul states (passing away old things". You must pass away old or the natural man to become a new creature.

Paul seems to use the word reconciliation as synonymous to redemption. Reconciliation means to resolve, settle, or put in line. That is -

"...that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 5:19)

"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 5:21)

Thus we become new creatures, as we put off the old life and take on the new life which is living as Christ taught.
