Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Isaiah 14

Speaking of the death of Satan and the Babylonian king, with the wicked in outer darkness, Isaiah testifies that -

"They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;
17 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?"  (Isaiah 14:16–17)

Of Satan himself, having never had a body -

"All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house.
19 But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch..."  (Isaiah 14:18–19)

Suggesting to me that even worldly great kings have great burial stones and reminders, but Satan, having not body, won't even have that.

Isaiah 13

Prophesying concerning "Babylon" or the wicked in the last days, Isaiah sees -

"...I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible."  (Isaiah 13:11)

It seems that only the truly humble -

"...I will make a man more precious than fine gold..."  (Isaiah 13:12)

Isaiah 12

Seeing the millennium, Isaiah tells us -

"...for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee."  (Isaiah 12:6)

Which suggests the Savior will dwell amongst the saints in that day.

Isaiah 11

As one studies the years after King Solomon, much conflict is had between the children of Israel as Ephraim and nine other tribes separate and war with Judah.

On Moroni's initial visit with the Prophet Joseph Smith, revealed -

"...he quoted the eleventh chapter of Isaiah, saying that it was about to be fulfilled."  (Joseph Smith—History 1:40)

In the eleventh chapter of Isaiah, Isaiah prophecies that in our day -

"The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim."  (Isaiah 11:13)

Obviously, this prophecy has not been fulfilled.

Isaiah 10

As Isaiah prophecies concerning the coming destruction of the Assyrians, he also prophecies in the latter days concerning a repentant return of Israel (lost ten tribes) -

"And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
21 The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.
22 For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.
23 For the Lord God of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined, in the midst of all the land."  (Isaiah 10:20–23)

Obviously, those that will return are righteous.

Isaiah 9

Isaiah's warning to Israel and Judah is the same as it is in out day...if we don't keep the commandments, we will be destroyed".

"For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke.
19 Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother.
20 And he shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:
21 Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh: and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still."  (Isaiah 9:18–21)

For those that choose to repent -

"The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined."  (Isaiah 9:2)

That Light is Christ.

Isaiah 8

We are taught to trust the Lord, not the arm of flesh.  Ahaz is warned -

"Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces.
10 Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us."  (Isaiah 8:9–10)

Ahaz just couldn't do that.

Isaiah 7

Ahaz was given a wonderful opportunity to experience a sign from heaven as Isaiah tells hims -

"Ask thee a sign of the Lord thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above."  (Isaiah 7:11)

But so unbelieving was Ahaz that he refused.  How disappointing when a leaders refuses to receive a sign the Lord has offered.

Consequently the Lord gives him signs of desolations to come.

Isaiah 6

As Isaiah his blessed with a vision of the Savior's throne, he struggles with his unworthiness upon which -

"Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:
7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged."  (Isaiah 6:6–7)

Being thus cleansed by the Holy Ghost by the power of the atonement of Jesus Christ, Isaiah -

"...heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me."  (Isaiah 6:8)

Just as Alma, sons of Mosiah, Enos, and many other great men, when experiencing the atonement of Jesus Christ, Isaiah also felt the desire to bless his fellowmen..."Here am I; send me."

Isaiah 5

As Isaiah relates a poetic parable of the Lord of the vineyard, he describes the nature of the righteous and wicked in the last days.  He says of the wicked -

"Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!"  (Isaiah 5:23)

In other words, in my mind, they will attack the righteous in or to destroy him.  Recently, the President of the United States has nominated a new Judge for the supreme court.  I've noticed that immediately, many are beginning to attack him for his righteous views in order to destroy him.

Isaiah 4

Seeing that latter days, Isaiah tells that -

"...the Lord will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence."   (Isaiah 4:5)

The cloud of smoke by day and flaming fire by night was a sign to the Israelites that the Lord was with them.  Thus the promise of Isaiah is, in addition to Zion's assemblies, the Lord can be in our homes if we keep our covenants.

Isaiah 3

Isaiah speaks of when men become wicked and then women also become wicked, he warns -

"...the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable."
(Isaiah 3:5)

Even to the point that -

"The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not..."  (Isaiah 3:9)

"...Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves."  (Isaiah 3:9)

Isaiah 2

Much of the words of Isaiah seem to not only be about Judah and Jerusalem in his day but also the Nephites as we as us in the latter days.  Isaiah talks of those that choose to abandon the words of the Lord.  One being -

"Therefore thou hast forsaken thy people the house of Jacob, because they be replenished from the east, and are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they please themselves in the children of strangers."  (Isaiah 2:6)

In my mind in our day, "children of strangers" are those that are unbelievers or the unfaithful.

Isaiah 1

After chastising Israel for the wickedness, Isaiah counsels -

"...cease to do evil;
17 Learn to do well..."  (Isaiah 1:16–17)

In my mind, learn to do well means learn to minister to others.

Ecclesisastes 12

As the Preacher continues analyzing life from both a natural man and believer perspectives, he closes -

"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil."  (Ecclesiastes 12:13–14)

Ecclesiastes 2

The "Preacher" recalls how he pursued the natural man with riches and wealth and then learns -

"So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.
10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.
11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun."  (Ecclesiastes 2:9–11)

Which suggests to me that everything is fleeting (vanity) and does nothing to bring peace of the Spirit.   It follows the truth -

"For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it."  (Mark 8:35)

Isaiah 38

When Hezekiah was told by Isaiah that he was going to die, Hezekiah prayed -

"...Remember now, O Lord, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore."  (Isaiah 38:3)

I believe that when we are in dire circumstances and need the Lord's help and blessings, we can do so  in confidence when we are paying our tithing, keeping the commandments, etc.  When it is according to the Lord's will, he may bless us for when he had prayed so -

"Then came the word of the Lord to Isaiah, saying,
5 Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years."  (Isaiah 38:4–5)
