Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Acts 8

We are taught in modern day revelation that -

"...in the church, two priesthoods, namely, the Melchizedek and Aaronic, including the Levitical Priesthood." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 107:1

"...the first is called the Melchizedek Priesthood is because Melchizedek was such a great high priest." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 107:2)

And -

"The second priesthood is called the Priesthood of Aaron, because it was conferred upon Aaron and his seed, throughout all their generations.
14 Why it is called the lesser priesthood is because it is an appendage to the greater, or the Melchizedek Priesthood, and has power in administering outward ordinances." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 107:13 - 14)

This doctrine becomes very apparent as the Samaritans, -

"...when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women." (New Testament | Acts 8:12)

It is clear with the Samaritans and with the Ethiopian Eunuch, that Phillip possessed priesthood authority to baptize. But we witness the differences of priesthood authority as it was necessary that -

"...when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost." (New Testament | Acts 8:14 - 17)

What is interesting is that there is also suggested a third priesthood, but in this case, not of God, but the priesthood of the advesary, as -

"...a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:
10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God." (New Testament | Acts 8:9 - 10)

Nephi called this representation, priestcraft where -

"...priestcrafts are that men preach and set themselves up for a light unto the world, that they may get gain and praise of the world; but they seek not the welfare of Zion." (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 26:29)

This again becomes apparent as -

"...Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost." (New Testament | Acts 8:18 - 19)

In that it was apparent that Simon's motives were wicked -

"Because their hearts are set so much upon the things of this world, and aspire to the honors of men..." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 121:35)

Peter responded -

"...Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.
22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee." (New Testament | Acts 8:20 - 22)

It becomes clear with this experience that there are two distinct priesthoods and a third as a false imitation.
