Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

D&C 107

The Lord reveals that -

"...High priests after the order of the Melchizedek Priesthood have a right to officiate in their own standing, under the direction of the presidency, in administering spiritual things, and also in the office of an elder, priest (of the Levitical order), teacher, deacon, and member."  (Doctrine and Covenants 107:10)

I specifically note "under the direction of the presidency" which suggests to me that this is only per the handbook of instructions as well as callings and setting apart.

D&C 106

The Lord promises Warren Cowdery as well as being specifically warned -

"...blessed is my servant Warren, for I will have mercy on him; and, notwithstanding the vanity of his heart, I will lift him up inasmuch as he will humble himself before me.

8 And I will give him grace and assurance wherewith he may stand..."  (Doctrine and Covenants 106:7–8)

In my mind, this is a blessing and warning to all.  Ultimately, Warren did not heed the warning of vanity and later left the Church.

D&C 105

The Savior explains how The Church must approach reclaiming Zion -

"...inasmuch as they follow the counsel which they receive, they shall have power after many days to accomplish all things pertaining to Zion.

38 And again I say unto you, sue for peace, not only to the people that have smitten you, but also to all people;

39 And lift up an ensign of peace, and make a proclamation of peace unto the ends of the earth;

40 And make proposals for peace unto those who have smitten you, according to the voice of the Spirit which is in you, and all things shall work together for your good."  (Doctrine and Covenants 105:37–40)

This probably wasn't what some in Zions Camp expected.

D&C 105

The Lord teaches at Fishing River -

"...I say unto you, were it not for the transgressions of my people, speaking concerning the church and not individuals, they might have been redeemed even now.

3 But behold, they have not learned to be obedient to the things which I required at their hands, but are full of all manner of evil, and do not impart of their substance, as becometh saints, to the poor and afflicted among them;

4 And are not united according to the union required by the law of the celestial kingdom;

5 And Zion cannot be built up unless it is by the principles of the law of the celestial kingdom; otherwise I cannot receive her unto myself.

6 And my people must needs be chastened until they learn obedience, if it must needs be, by the things which they suffer."  (Doctrine and Covenants 105:2–6)

In my mind, this is profound doctrine.  Even though He is speaking The Church in general, it applies to us all when complain, speak negative of our leaders, become disobedient.  In other words, even though He loves us, "Zion cannot be built up unless it is by the principles of the law of the celestial kingdom".

D&C 104

The Lord describes His will concerning debt -

"...verily I say unto you, concerning your debts—behold it is my will that you shall pay all your debts.

79 And it is my will that you shall humble yourselves before me, and obtain this blessing by your diligence and humility and the prayer of faith.

80 And inasmuch as you are diligent and humble, and exercise the prayer of faith, behold, I will soften the hearts of those to whom you are in debt, until I shall send means unto you for your deliverance."  (Doctrine and Covenants 104:78–80)

Again, this is a covenant.  If we follow His conditions, we will obtain the promise.

D&C 104

The Lord explains our relationship to that which we "possess" -

"...a commandment I give unto you concerning your stewardship which I have appointed unto you.

55 Behold, all these properties are mine, or else your faith is vain, and ye are found hypocrites, and the covenants which ye have made unto me are broken;

56 And if the properties are mine, then ye are stewards..."  (Doctrine and Covenants 104:54–56)

This should be our attitude concerning all our properties.

D&C 103

The Lord provided some strong words that all of us that assume we are covenant making saints -

"...I have suffered them thus far, that they might fill up the measure of their iniquities, that their cup might be full;
4 And that those who call themselves after my name might be chastened for a little season with a sore and grievous chastisement, because they did not hearken altogether unto the precepts and commandments which I gave unto them."  (Doctrine and Covenants 103:3–4)

And -

"...inasmuch as they keep not my commandments, and hearken not to observe all my words, the kingdoms of the world shall prevail against them.
9 For they were set to be a light unto the world, and to be the saviors of men;
10 And inasmuch as they are not the saviors of men, they are as salt that has lost its savor, and is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men."  (Doctrine and Covenants 103:8–10)

"Nevertheless, if they pollute their inheritances they shall be thrown down; for I will not spare them if they pollute their inheritances."  (Doctrine and Covenants 103:14)

I need to head "alltogether" these words.

Elder Ulisses Soares - Jesus Christ: The Caregiver of Our Soul

 As Elder Soares spoke of the atonement of Jesus Christ, he said -

"While through His sacrifice the Savior unconditionally removed the effects of physical death, He did not eliminate our personal responsibility to repent for the sins we commit. Rather, He extended to us a loving invitation to be reconciled to our Eternal Father. Through Jesus Christ and His atoning sacrifice, we can experience a mighty change of mind and heart, bringing a fresh attitude, both toward God and toward life in general. When we sincerely repent of our sins and turn our hearts and will to God and His commandments, we can receive His forgiveness and feel the influence of His Holy Spirit in greater abundance. Mercifully, we avoid having to experience the depth of suffering the Savior endured."

While the blessing of resurrection is fee to all, forgiveness, reconciliation, and cleansing is not.  These blessings have conditions.

Russell M. Nelson - What We Are Learning and Will Never Forget

 One of the things that caught my eye that we learned from the pandemic -

"Brethren, you bear the priesthood of God. “The rights of the priesthood are inseparably connected with the powers of heaven.”3 You and your family have received priesthood ordinances. It is “in the ordinances [of the priesthood that] the power of godliness is manifest.”4 That power is available to you and your family in your own home as you keep the covenants you have made.

Adding -

"You may feel that there is still more you need to do to make your home truly a sanctuary of faith. If so, please do it! If you are married, counsel with your wife as your equal partner in this crucial work. There are few pursuits more important than this. Between now and the time the Lord comes again, we all need our homes to be places of serenity and security."

Even though there was an increase in our home of gospel discussion on the Sabbath, I recognize that this should continue after Covid.

D&C 101

 Even as the saints are being molested and run out of Zion, the Lord lovingly states -

"...in that day all who are found upon the watch-tower, or in other words, all mine Israel, shall be saved.

13 And they that have been scattered shall be gathered.

14 And all they who have mourned shall be comforted.

15 And all they who have given their lives for my name shall be crowned.

16 Therefore, let your hearts be comforted concerning Zion; for all flesh is in mine hands; be still and know that I am God."  (Doctrine and Covenants 101:12–16)

And then He adds -

"Zion shall not be moved out of her place, notwithstanding her children are scattered.

18 They that remain, and are pure in heart, shall return, and come to their inheritances, they and their children, with songs of everlasting joy, to build up the waste places of Zion—

19 And all these things that the prophets might be fulfilled.

20 And, behold, there is none other place appointed than that which I have appointed; neither shall there be any other place appointed than that which I have appointed, for the work of the gathering of my saints—
21 Until the day cometh when there is found no more room for them; and then I have other places which I will appoint unto them, and they shall be called stakes, for the curtains or the strength of Zion.

22 Behold, it is my will, that all they who call on my name, and worship me according to mine everlasting gospel, should gather together, and stand in holy places..."(Doctrine and Covenants 101:17–22)

With all that is taught, He counsels...."stand in holy places".

D&C 101

 I can't help but think of some Individuals, as the Lord declares of those not keeping their covenants -

"They were slow to hearken unto the voice of the Lord their God; therefore, the Lord their God is slow to hearken unto their prayers, to answer them in the day of their trouble.

8 In the day of their peace they esteemed lightly my counsel; but, in the day of their trouble, of necessity they feel after me."  (Doctrine and Covenants 101:7–8)

But even so, He follows concerning repentance -

"Verily I say unto you, notwithstanding their sins, my bowels are filled with compassion towards them. I will not utterly cast them off; and in the day of wrath I will remember mercy."  (Doctrine and Covenants 101:9)

D&C 101

 After some individuals in Zion, having been warned previously to keep His commandments, the Lord then explains -

"Verily I say unto you, concerning your brethren who have been afflicted, and persecuted, and cast out from the land of their inheritance—

2 I, the Lord, have suffered the affliction to come upon them, wherewith they have been afflicted, in consequence of their transgressions;

3 Yet I will own them, and they shall be mine in that day when I shall come to make up my jewels.

4 Therefore, they must needs be chastened and tried, even as Abraham, who was commanded to offer up his only son.

5 For all those who will not endure chastening, but deny me, cannot be sanctified."  (Doctrine and Covenants 101:1–5)

In my mind, the Lord lovingly explains His motive.  He wants to sanctify them.

D&C 100

 The Lord covenants -

"...I will raise up unto myself a pure people, that will serve me in righteousness;

17 And all that call upon the name of the Lord, and keep his commandments, shall be saved."  (Doctrine and Covenants 100:16–17)

He couldn't be more clear.
