Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

D&C 92

As the Lord instructs Frederick G. Williams to enter into the United Order, He says -

"...What I say unto one I say unto all."  (Doctrine and Covenants 92:1)

Adding -

"...you shall be a lively member in this order; and inasmuch as you are faithful in keeping all former commandments you shall be blessed forever."  (Doctrine and Covenants 92:2)

Which suggests to me that we need to be active in all we are commanded to do.

D&C 91

The Lord explains why the Acpocrypha is not included in the Standard Works -

"...There are many things contained therein that are true, and it is mostly translated correctly;

2 There are many things contained therein that are not true, which are interpolations by the hands of men."  (Doctrine and Covenants 91:1–2)

D&C 90

The has previously addressed that what I say to one, I say to all.  Several verses caught my eye -

"For it shall come to pass in that day, that every man shall hear the fulness of the gospel in his own tongue, and in his own language, through those who are ordained unto this power, by the administration of the Comforter, shed forth upon them for the revelation of Jesus Christ."  (Doctrine and Covenants 90:11)

I believe all will hear the the fulness of the gospel and obey, whether it be in during this life, after death, and I will add the premortal existence.

"...this shall be your business and mission in all your lives, to preside in council, and set in order all the affairs of this church and kingdom.
17 Be not ashamed, neither confounded; but be admonished in all your high-mindedness and pride, for it bringeth a snare upon your souls.
18 Set in order your houses; keep slothfulness and uncleanness far from you."  (Doctrine and Covenants 90:16–18)

"verily I say unto you, that I, the Lord, will contend with Zion, and plead with her strong ones, and chasten her until she overcomes and is clean before me."
(Doctrine and Covenants 90:36)

Warnings to all priesthood leaders.

Elder Quentin L. Cook - Bishops—Shepherds over the Lord’s Flock

Elder Quentin L. Cook taught -

"You might ask, “Why is the bishop directed to spend so much time with the youth?” The Lord has organized His Church to accomplish crucial priorities. Accordingly, the organization of His Church has a structure in which the bishop has a dual responsibility. He has doctrinal responsibility for the ward as a whole, but he also has specific doctrinal responsibility for the priests quorum."

The young men who are priests and the young women of the same age are at a very important stage in their lives and development. During a short period of time, they make decisions that have significant lifelong implications. They determine whether they will qualify for the temple, serve a mission,20 strive to be married in the temple, and prepare for their life’s work. These decisions, once made, have profound spiritual and practical implications for the remainder of their lives. Bishops, please know that a relatively short time spent with a young priest, young woman, or young adult can help them understand the power available to them through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. It can provide a vision that will have a profound influence upon their entire life."

From my experience, this is absolutely true concerning our youth.

D&C 89

We are told why the Lord provided us the "word of wisdom" -

"Given for a principle with promise, adapted to the capacity of the weak and the weakest of all saints, who are or can be called saints.

4 Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation—"  (Doctrine and Covenants 89:3–4)

Is there a better reason to live this law?

D&C 88

As the Lord introduces the "school of the prophets" which I believe developed more into priesthood meetings,  He spoke of the type of relationship these brethren should have teaching -

"...when any shall come in after him, let the teacher arise, and, with uplifted hands to heaven, yea, even directly, salute his brother or brethren with these words:

133 Art thou a brother or brethren? I salute you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, in token or remembrance of the everlasting covenant, in which covenant I receive you to fellowship, in a determination that is fixed, immovable, and unchangeable, to be your friend and brother through the grace of God in the bonds of love, to walk in all the commandments of God blameless, in thanksgiving, forever and ever. Amen."  (Doctrine and Covenants 88:132–133)

And at the same time -

"...he that cometh in and is faithful before me, and is a brother, or if they be brethren, they shall salute the president or teacher with uplifted hands to heaven, with this same prayer and covenant, or by saying Amen, in token of the same."  (Doctrine and Covenants 88:135)

I believe these words were not intended to be word for word but more of type of communication, for the Lord explained -

"...verily, I say unto you, this is an ensample unto you for a salutation to one another in the house of God, in the school of the prophets."  (Doctrine and Covenants 88:136)

D&C 88

The Savior declared of His second coming -

"...the saints that are upon the earth, who are alive, shall be quickened and be caught up to meet him.

97 And they who have slept in their graves shall come forth, for their graves shall be opened; and they also shall be caught up to meet him in the midst of the pillar of heaven—

98 They are Christ’s, the first fruits, they who shall descend with him first, and they who are on the earth and in their graves, who are first caught up to meet him..."  (Doctrine and Covenants 88:96–98)

In either case, my hope is to be one of these.

D&C 88

The Lord instructed His saints -

"...I give unto you a commandment that you shall teach one another the doctrine of the kingdom."  (Doctrine and Covenants 88:77)

I believe that it is true doctrine that builds faith.

President Russell M. Nelson - Christ is Risen; Faith in Him Will Move Mountains

President Russell M. Nelson mentioned five ways to increase faith -

"First, study. Become an engaged learner. Immerse yourself in the scriptures to understand better Christ’s mission and ministry. Know the doctrine of Christ so that you understand its power for your life. Internalize the truth that the Atonement of Jesus Christ applies to you. He took upon Himself your misery, your mistakes, your weakness, and your sins. He paid the compensatory price and provided the power for you to move every mountain you will ever face. You obtain that power with your faith, trust, and willingness to follow Him.

Moving your mountains may require a miracle. Learn about miracles. Miracles come according to your faith in the Lord. Central to that faith is trusting His will and timetable—how and when He will bless you with the miraculous help you desire. Only your unbelief will keep God from blessing you with miracles to move the mountains in your life.

The more you learn about the Savior, the easier it will be to trust in His mercy, His infinite love, and His strengthening, healing, and redeeming power. The Savior is never closer to you than when you are facing or climbing a mountain with faith.

Second, choose to believe in Jesus Christ. If you have doubts about God the Father and His Beloved Son or the validity of the Restoration or the veracity of Joseph Smith’s divine calling as a prophet, choose to believe and stay faithful. Take your questions to the Lord and to other faithful sources. Study with the desire to believe rather than with the hope that you can find a flaw in the fabric of a prophet’s life or a discrepancy in the scriptures. Stop increasing your doubts by rehearsing them with other doubters. Allow the Lord to lead you on your journey of spiritual discovery.

Third, act in faith. What would you do if you had more faith? Think about it. Write about it. Then receive more faith by doing something that requires more faith.

Fourth, partake of sacred ordinances worthily. Ordinances unlock the power of God for your life.

And fifth, ask your Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, for help.

Faith takes work. Receiving revelation takes work. But “every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” God knows what will help your faith grow. Ask, and then ask again.

He concludes

"Your growing faith in Him will move mountains—not the mountains of rock that beautify the earth but the mountains of misery in your lives. Your flourishing faith will help you turn challenges into unparalleled growth and opportunity."

D&C 88

I am amazed how much doctrine is given in the 88th section.

The Lord continues to teach -

"Whatsoever ye ask the Father in my name it shall be given unto you, that is expedient for you;

65 And if ye ask anything that is not expedient for you, it shall turn unto your condemnation."  (Doctrine and Covenants 88:64–65)

In my mind, condemnation is a stop in one's eternal progression.  For me, it would include praying for sports outcomes which have nothing to do with eternal matters.

D&C 88

 The Lord explains -

" All beings who abide not in those conditions are not justified.

40 For intelligence cleaveth unto intelligence; wisdom receiveth wisdom; truth embraceth truth; virtue loveth virtue; light cleaveth unto light; mercy hath compassion on mercy and claimeth her own; justice continueth its course and claimeth its own; judgment goeth before the face of him who sitteth upon the throne and governeth and executeth all things."  (Doctrine and Covenants 88:39–40)

In other words, much like here in mortality, likeness seems to want to be with likeness.

D&C 88

As the Lord teaches the difference of resurrected bodies and ones ability to abide a glory, He teaches -

"...they shall return again to their own place, to enjoy that which they are willing to receive, because they were not willing to enjoy that which they might have received.

33 For what doth it profit a man if a gift is bestowed upon him, and he receive not the gift? Behold, he rejoices not in that which is given unto him, neither rejoices in him who is the giver of the gift.

34 And again, verily I say unto you, that which is governed by law is also preserved by law and perfected and sanctified by the same."  (Doctrine and Covenants 88:32–34)

Willingness and obedience to God's laws is the key.

D&C 88

When considering the "powers of heaven", the Lord reveals concerning the Light of Christ -

"Which truth shineth. This is the light of Christ. As also he is in the sun, and the light of the sun, and the power thereof by which it was made.

8 As also he is in the moon, and is the light of the moon, and the power thereof by which it was made;

9 As also the light of the stars, and the power thereof by which they were made;

10 And the earth also, and the power thereof, even the earth upon which you stand.

11 And the light which shineth, which giveth you light, is through him who enlighteneth your eyes, which is the same light that quickeneth your understandings;

12 Which light proceedeth forth from the presence of God to fill the immensity of space—

13 The light which is in all things, which giveth life to all things, which is the law by which all things are governed, even the power of God who sitteth upon his throne, who is in the bosom of eternity, who is in the midst of all things."  (Doctrine and Covenants 88:7–13)

The Light of Christ is a power of heaven.

M. Russell Ballard - Hope in Christ

Elder M. Russell Ballard told us -

"The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles have counseled together in a spirit of prayer and with a yearning to understand how to help all who feel alone or feel they don’t belong."

He added -

"The gospel of Jesus Christ has the power to unite us. We are ultimately more alike than we are different. As members of God’s family, we are truly brothers and sisters. Paul stated, “And [God] hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth.”

We need to remember that.

D&C 87

As many cry that man is causing "climate change", the Lord states that because of wickedness of  men that -

"...with the sword and by bloodshed the inhabitants of the earth shall mourn; and with famine, and plague, and earthquake, and the thunder of heaven, and the fierce and vivid lightning also, shall the inhabitants of the earth be made to feel the wrath, and indignation, and chastening hand of an Almighty God, until the consumption decreed hath made a full end of all nations..."  (Doctrine and Covenants 87:6)

D&C 86

Peter spoke of the time of the restitution of all things.  But in our day, the Lord spoke of this saying -

"Therefore your life and the priesthood have remained, and must needs remain through you and your lineage until the restoration of all things spoken by the mouths of all the holy prophets since the world began."  (Doctrine and Covenants 86:10)

In my mind, all ordinances, covenants, and instructed practices would be restore in this dispensation.  It may be for a short period, but will be restored.

D&C 85

Regarding entering into the law of consecration, the Lord said -

"It is contrary to the will and commandment of God that those who receive not their inheritance by consecration, agreeable to his law, which he has given, that he may tithe his people, to prepare them against the day of vengeance and burning, should have their names enrolled with the people of God.
4 Neither is their genealogy to be kept, or to be had where it may be found on any of the records or history of the church.
5 Their names shall not be found, neither the names of the fathers, nor the names of the children written in the book of the law of God, saith the Lord of Hosts."  (Doctrine and Covenants 85:3–5)

In my mind, to literally take an inheritance or distribution, but refuse to enter into the law of consecration, cannot inherit the kingdom of God.
