Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Acts 9

In vision, the Lord told Ananias to got bless Saul to receive his sight.  It appears Ananias basically responded "You have got to be kidding me".  But the most important lesson is that Ananias, at great risk and great faith, was obedient and -

"...went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost."  (Acts 9:17)

Probably to his surprise, that  -

"...immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized."  (Acts 9:18)

What a special experience of faith and obedience.

Acts 8

It becomes clear that after being baptized, receiving the Gift of the Holy requires another priesthood (Melchizedek) ordinance for -

"...when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost."  (Acts 8:14–17)

In my mind, Philip may have only held the Aaronic Priesthood.

Acts 7

I don't believe I really understood how long Moses lived in the land of Midian.  Stephen testifies -

"...when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush."  (Acts 7:30)

Obviously, Moses live a great life in Midean.

Acts 6

I find it interesting that as seven were called to serve to assist in the ministry -

"Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them."  (Acts 6:6)

Obviously, these men were ordained to be seventies.

Acts 4

After being placed in prison and chastised because of healing done in the name of Jesus Christ, Peter and John declare -

"...we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard..."  (Acts 4:20)

I believe that holds true for all of us.

Luke 2

Luke wrote of the early saints -

"...all that believed were together, and had all things common..."  (Acts 2:44)

I look at this far differently than many others.  I believe it would be better said, "they all had at least common things".  Which would suggest to me that things that are necessary and common we had by all.  It doesn't mean to me that the saints owned everything equally.

Acts 1

It appears from the early days of the Church, women participated with influence, where Luke records -

"...when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphæus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren."  (Acts 1:13–14)

Obviously, women participated in councils.

Matthew 27

After they had worked to get the Savior crucified -

"...the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,
63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again."  (Matthew 27:62–63)

Obviously, they understood that the Savior was referring to Himself when talking about "this temple".  They plotted again -

"...Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.
65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.
66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch."  (Matthew 27:64–66)

No question they are guilty, not ignorant.

John 20

Not much is said about this, but John records that the Savior told Thomas -

"...Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing."  (John 20:27)

This is also mentioned in the Book of Mormon.  In my mind, thrusting hand "into" my side would suggest to me that Thomas found no mortal bowels.  Just a thought.

John 20

I probably have mentioned this before, but among all the women mentioned in the New Testament, she must have had a more unique and special relationship with the Savior.  For she was the first He came to after His resurrection.  For me, the first person I would visit would be my wife.

To her, Jesus said -

"...Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father..."  (John 20:17)

The JST of the Bible says -

"...Hold me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father..."

Which suggest to me "do not hold on to me", which provides a better understanding.

Luke 22

The Savior's boldness is apparent as Luke records -

"...the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,
67 Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:
68 And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.
69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.
70 Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am."  (Luke 22:66–70)

So true!

Mark 14

Upon anointing Him with oil, the Savior said of Mary of Bethany -

"Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her."  (Mark 14:9)

Obviously, Mary listened, harkened, and understood the Savior's mission.

Matthew 26

Much his said about Peter's denial of knowing the Savior as he watched the Savior's illegal trial after which -

"...Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly."  (Matthew 26:75)

I know their are many opinions on this event.  But I feel that Peter's denial was so that he could remain and witness the event not necessarily that he was scared.

John 18

I find it interesting that a Jesus was led to Annas, Johns writes -

"And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest."  (John 18:15)

I assume John is referring to himself as the other disciple.

John 17

The evening before His crucifixion, the Savior called His apostles -

"Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you."  (John 15:14–15)

But a short time later on the Mount of Olives, He prays -

"As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent."  (John 17:2–3)

Then -

"...Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are."  (John 17:11)

Though it is not necessarily said, I sense the Lord has moved from friends to family having "eternal life".

John 15

The Savior taught His apostles shortly before His death -

"If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you."  (John 15:18–19)

This seems to explain all the hate in the world.  The world hates anything of good report or praiseworthy.

John 14

The Savior told His apostles -

"...whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it."  (John 14:13–14)

I note again...He told His ordained apostles.  I note that the Savior adds to all -

"...that is expedient for you..."  (Doctrine and Covenants 88:64)
