Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

D&C 112

Though it is a commonly quoted scripture, the Lord counseled Thomas B. Marsh -

"Be thou humble; and the Lord thy God shall lead thee by the hand, and give thee answer to thy prayers.  (Doctrine and Covenants 112:10)

It suggests to me that things don't always go as one may hope.

D&C 110

Elijah said -

"Therefore, the keys of this dispensation are committed into your hands; and by this ye may know that the great and dreadful day of the Lord is near, even at the doors."  (Doctrine and Covenants 110:16)

I believe it was at this point that priesthood keys that have been given were now had in this last dispensation.

D&C 109

In the Prophet's dedicatory prayer of the Kirtland Temple, He prayed -

"That when the trump shall sound for the dead, we shall be caught up in the cloud to meet thee, that we may ever be with the Lord..."  (Doctrine and Covenants 109:75)

I have always wondered if I will be alive during the second coming.  But he older I get, the more this verse brings me hope and comfort.

D&C 109

Obviously, none of us are perfect.  I noticed this morning several references to repentance this morning in the dedication of the Kirtland Temple -

"...when thy people transgress, any of them, they may speedily repent and return unto thee, and find favor in thy sight, and be restored to the blessings which thou hast ordained to be poured out upon those who shall reverence thee in thy house."  (Doctrine and Covenants 109:21)

"O Jehovah, have mercy upon this people, and as all men sin, forgive the transgressions of thy people, and let them be blotted out forever."  (Doctrine and Covenants 109:34)

"...inasmuch as they will repent, thou art gracious and merciful, and wilt turn away thy wrath when thou lookest upon the face of thine Anointed."  (Doctrine and Covenants 109:53)

I believe that in attending the temple, we should do so with a broken heart and contrite spirit.

D&C 108

As Lyman Sherman was inspired to ask the Prophet for a revelation on his duty, the Lord said -

"...arise up and be more careful henceforth in observing your vows, which you have made and do make, and you shall be blessed with exceeding great blessings."  (Doctrine and Covenants 108:3)

As constant reminder as we partake of the sacrament and also attend the temple.

D&C 107

The lord teaches of those that preside over quorums -

"...to sit in council with them, and to teach them according to the covenants."  (Doctrine and Covenants 107:89)

This suggests to me that as we are instructed to sit in council and discuss our challenges and responsibilities developing a plan, we are also to teach according to the covenants.  Councils without that end in mind is does not fulfill its purpose.

D&C 107

I believe the following is to all that preside over quorums, groups, or auxiliaries -

"The decisions of these quorums, or either of them, are to be made in all righteousness, in holiness, and lowliness of heart, meekness and long-suffering, and in faith, and virtue, and knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and charity;
31 Because the promise is, if these things abound in them they shall not be unfruitful in the knowledge of the Lord."  (Doctrine and Covenants 107:30–31)

D&C 106

Concerning the law of justifications the Lord promises Warren Cowdery if he humbles himself -

"...I will give him grace and assurance wherewith he may stand..."  (Doctrine and Covenants 106:8)

This enabling power is conditional upon humility.

D&C 105

Sunday, in high priest group, we discussed being a "light unto the world".  The Lord suggested much the same thing as Zions Camp was being disbanded -

"But first let my army become very great, and let it be sanctified before me, that it may become fair as the sun, and clear as the moon, and that her banners may be terrible unto all nations;
32 That the kingdoms of this world may be constrained to acknowledge that the kingdom of Zion is in very deed the kingdom of our God and his Christ; therefore, let us become subject unto her laws ."Doctrine and Covenants 105:31–32)

Thus we will be a light unto the world.

D&C 103

This is a covenant necessary for exaltation where -

"Let no man be afraid to lay down his life for my sake; for whoso layeth down his life for my sake shall find it again.
28 And whoso is not willing to lay down his life for my sake is not my disciple."  (Doctrine and Covenants 103:27–28)

D&C 103

In my mind, to those that have made covenants with the Lord, He tells them -

"....inasmuch as they keep not my commandments, and hearken not to observe all my words, the kingdoms of the world shall prevail against them."  (Doctrine and Covenants 103:8)

A warning to those who have made covenants.

D&C 102

Unlike courts of the world with defendants and prosecutors, in a disciplinary council -

"The accused, in all cases, has a right to one-half of the council, to prevent insult or injustice."
(Doctrine and Covenants 102:15)

D&C 101

I recently read Bill O'Reilly's "Killing England" on the country's fight for independence.  Many men sacrificed their life for liberty.  Of such the Savior said -

"...for this purpose have I established the Constitution of this land, by the hands of wise men whom I raised up unto this very purpose, and redeemed the land by the shedding of blood."  (Doctrine and Covenants 101:80)

Obviously, the Lord has his hand in our independence and constitution.

D&C 101

In a day when everyone is obsessed with their personal appearance, the Lord said -

"...care not for the body, neither the life of the body; but care for the soul, and for the life of the soul.
38 And seek the face of the Lord always, that in patience ye may possess your souls, and ye shall have eternal life."  (Doctrine and Covenants 101:37–38)

I sense He is saying, keep an eternal perspective.

D&C 101

The Lord warns the saints -

"For all those who will not endure chastening, but deny me, cannot be sanctified."  (Doctrine and Covenants 101:5)

If we cannot endure to the end but choose to deny the atonement of Jesus Christ, He cannot sanctify us or make us clean.

D&C 100

As the Lord comforts the Prophet Joseph Smith concerning his family, He comments -

"....for in me there is all power."  (Doctrine and Covenants 100:1)

I believe that.  As LDS, "grace" has  greater meaning  as the Bible Dictionary states -

"It is through the grace of the Lord Jesus, made possible by His atoning sacrifice, that mankind will be raised in immortality, every person receiving his body from the grave in a condition of everlasting life. It is likewise through the grace of the Lord that individuals, through faith in the Atonement of Jesus Christ and repentance of their sins, receive strength and assistance to do good works that they otherwise would not be able to maintain if left to their own means. This grace is an enabling power that allows men and women to lay hold on eternal life and exaltation after they have expended their own best efforts."  (Bible Dictionary, Grace)
