Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Jeremiah 44

Where most of the condemnation of Israel was generally to me, the Lord through Jeremiah acknowledges that it is also women saying-

"Have ye forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of the kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, which they have committed in the land of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem?"  (Jeremiah 44:9)

"They are not humbled even unto this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers."  (Jeremiah 44:10)

Explaining that even the women -

"...do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.
18 But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.
19 And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto her, without our men?"  (Jeremiah 44:17–19)

I hate to say it but in the same manner, metaphorically, many women worship the "queen of heaven".

Jeremiah 42

Of all the sinners the Savior seem condemned the most were hypocrites.  When Johanan and his followers approached Jeremiah concerning the will of the Lord, they said -

"...The Lord be a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not even according to all things for the which the Lord thy God shall send thee to us.
6 Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God, to whom we send thee; that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of the Lord our God."  (Jeremiah 42:5–6)

But when the word of the Lord came contrary to their plans and faith, their response was -

"We will not dwell in this land, neither obey the voice of the Lord your God,
14 Saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell..."  (Jeremiah 42:13–14)

Well that didn't happen in that Babylon attacked Egypt to leaving great devastation.

Jeremiah 34

When the Lord extends a covenant and we receive it. we are warned that "God will not be mocked".

At the direction of King Zedekiah, Judah  made a covenant to release all Hebrew man and maid servants as given in the law of Moses.  But after doing so, reneged on their commitment -

"But ye turned and polluted my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom ye had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids.
17 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the Lord, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth."  (Jeremiah 34:16–17)

I again comment that God will not be mocked.

Jeremiah 32

In answering Jeremiah's prayer, speaking of the last days, the Lord declares of the Jews -

"Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely:
38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God:
39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:
40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me."  (Jeremiah 32:37–40)

Though we see this in progress, we look forward to the total fulfillment of the prophecy.

Jeremiah 31

Jeremiah shares an important doctrine -

"If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the Lord, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever."  (Jeremiah 31:36)

The seed or family of Israel in the eternities are those that receive exaltation.  And obviously saving ordinances are necessary to become part of that family.

Jeremiah 29

Jeremiah counseled those that had already been carried away to Babylon -

"Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them;
6 Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may be increased there, and not diminished.
7 And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the Lord for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace."  (Jeremiah 29:5–7)

We have always been commanded to make the best of our situation and support governments over us. (12th Article of Faith)

Jeremiah 26

Lehi, a contemporary of Jeremiah, after crying repentance to Judah, unsurprisingly -

"...when the Jews heard these things they were angry with him; yea, even as with the prophets of old, whom they had cast out, and stoned, and slain; and they also sought his life, that they might take it away..."  (1 Nephi 1:20)

Jeremiah, after prophesying the forthcoming destruction -

"...when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak unto all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people took him, saying, Thou shalt surely die."  (Jeremiah 26:8)

Fortunately at -

"...the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death."  (Jeremiah 26:24)

Sadly, we learn of a prophet, Urijah after his life was threatened fled to Egypt, but -

"...they fetched forth Urijah out of Egypt, and brought him unto Jehoiakim the king; who slew him with the sword, and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people."  (Jeremiah 26:23)

Thank goodness the Lord led Lehi away.

Jeremiah 23

Jeremiah speaks of the leaders in his day -

"I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah."  (Jeremiah 23:14)

Sounds like today

Jeremiah 20

Jeremiah was one of those prophets that continually suffered in his calling.  After much persecution and being put in stocks, Jeremiah writes -

"...I am in derision daily, every one mocketh me.
8 For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; because the word of the Lord was made a reproach unto me, and a derision, daily.
9 Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name..."  (Jeremiah 20:7–9)

Even adding -

"Cursed be the day wherein I was born: let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed."  (Jeremiah 20:14)

Even though Jeremiah at times was very discouraged, he confesses -

"...But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay."  (Jeremiah 20:9)

The Spirit can be overpowering.

Jeremiah 16

I find it interesting that as Jeremiah continues to cry repentance and destruction to Judah, the Lord tells him their response will be -

"...Wherefore hath the Lord pronounced all this great evil against us? or what is our iniquity? or what is our sin that we have committed against the Lord our God?"  (Jeremiah 16:10)

And that Jeremiah should respond to them -

"Then shalt thou say unto them, Because your fathers have forsaken me, saith the Lord, and have walked after other gods, and have served them, and have worshipped them, and have forsaken me, and have not kept my law;
12 And ye have done worse than your fathers; for, behold, ye walk every one after the imagination of his evil heart, that they may not hearken unto me..."  (Jeremiah 16:11–12)

Sounds much like it will be in our day with the second coming.

Jeremiah 14

When Jeremiah questions the Lord why the wicked prosper and the righteous sometimes are dealt with treacherously, the Lord answers -

"If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?"  (Jeremiah 12:5)

Which suggest to me that with our own limited experience we do not see the entire picture.

The Lord even suggests of the wicked -

"What wilt thou say when he shall punish thee?"  (Jeremiah 13:21)

Obviously, the wicked excuses will blame others  to which the Lord says beforehand -

"The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.
15 Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed."  (Jeremiah 14:14–15)

We see these false prophets in government, education, and celebrities.

Jeremiah 7

I found the words -

"...Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.
4 Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, are these.
5 For if ye throughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbour;
6 If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt:
7 Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever."  (Jeremiah 7:3–7)

...especially "lying words, saying, The temple of the Lord"...to the point.   Many saints in our day talk of the temple but choose to not live the covenants made there.  It seems so hypocritical to me.

Jeremiah 7

Jeremiah exclaimed at the temple gates -

"Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, are these.
5 For if ye throughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbour;
6 If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt:
7 Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever."  (Jeremiah 7:4–7)

I believe those that suggest that they have been married in the temple and all is well should read the words of Jeremiah.  It reminds me -

"...Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams."  (1 Samuel 15:22)

Temple ordinances and covenants have conditions.

Jeremiah 5

As Jeremiah reviews the wickedness generally found in Judah, including idol worshipping and immorality for the Lord asks -

"How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses."  (Jeremiah 5:7)

Even such that -

"They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife."  (Jeremiah 5:8)

I can't help but note that Jeremiah and Lehi were contemporary.   Of Laman and Lemuel, Nephi said -

"...they were like unto the Jews who were at Jerusalem..."  (1 Nephi 2:13)

Where -

"The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?"  (Jeremiah 5:31)

Thus, just lkie those in wicked Judea -

"...we know that the people who were in the land of Jerusalem were a righteous people; for they kept the statutes and judgments of the Lord, and all his commandments, according to the law of Moses; wherefore, we know that they are a righteous people..." (1 Nephi 17:22)

Obviously, very few hearkened to Jeremiah.

Jeremiah 3

What I see is Jeremiah prophesying concerning Israel in the last days, the Lord states -

"...I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding."  (Jeremiah 3:15)

I believe the Lord has provided these such pastors in the Church, stakes and our wards.

Jeremiah 2

No question that Jeremiah and Lehi were contemporaries in Jerusalem.  Jeremiah writes of the Savior's words -

"...they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters..." (Jeremiah 2:13)

Nephi would later comment of his father's vision of the Tree of Life, where he adds -

"...I beheld that the rod of iron, which my father had seen, was the word of God, which led to the fountain of living waters, or to the tree of life..."  (1 Nephi 11:25)

Apparently, Jeremiah and Lehi were on the same page.
