Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Alma1

Again we are warned concerning matters of our day that -

"...it is not common that the voice of the people desireth anything contrary to that which is right; but it is common for the lesser part of the people to desire that which is not right; therefore this shall ye observe and make it your law—to do your business by the voice of the people.
27 And if the time comes that the voice of the people doth choose iniquity, then is the time that the judgments of God will come upon you; yea, then is the time he will visit you with great destruction even as he has hitherto visited this land."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 29:26 - 27)

I would specifically note the warning that when the voice of the people choose iniquity (i.e. abortions, gay marriages, pornography, gender changes, etc), He will visit us with destruction.

Also -

"...and were priestcraft to be enforced among this people it would prove their entire destruction."  (Book of Mormon | Alma 1:12)

Where -

"...priestcrafts are that men preach and set themselves up for a light unto the world, that they may get gain and praise of the world; but they seek not the welfare of Zion."  (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 26:29)

Alma also explains priestcraft are when  -

"...their were many who loved the vain things of the world, and they went forth preaching false doctrines; and this they did for the sake of riches and honor."  (Book of Mormon | Alma 1:16)

Obviously, this might also include those of non-religious affiliations that sale wickedness for gain.

Mosiah 29

Mosiah warns of those in political power -

"...behold, he has his friends in iniquity, and he keepeth his guards about him; and he teareth up the laws of those who have reigned in righteousness before him; and he trampleth under his feet the commandments of God;
23 And he enacteth laws, and sendeth them forth among his people, yea, laws after the manner of his own wickedness; and whosoever doth not obey his laws he causeth to be destroyed; and whosoever doth rebel against him he will send his armies against them to war, and if he can he will destroy them; and thus an unrighteous king doth pervert the ways of all righteousness."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 29:22 - 23)

Does this sound like our day?  Are there not recent laws after the manner of their wickedness?

Mosiah 27

Even though much of this chapter is concerning what Alma should do regarding the unrepentant members of the Church, I note again the teaching that in the Church -

"...there was a strict command throughout all the churches that there should be no persecutions among them, that there should be an equality among all men;
4 That they should let no pride nor haughtiness disturb their peace; that every man should esteem his neighbor as himself, laboring with their own hands for their support.
5 Yea, and all their priests and teachers should labor with their own hands for their support, in all cases save it were in sickness, or in much want; and doing these things, they did abound in the grace of God."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 27:3 - 5)

It is very clear in Church doctrine that those that are able should labor with their own hands for their own support and not rely upon others.

Mosiah 26

As I have focused recently on what it means to take upon oneself the name of Christ, I note the words of the Lord to Alma -

"...blessed art thou because thou hast established a church among this people; and they shall be established, and they shall be my people.
18 Yea, blessed is this people who are willing to bear my name; for in my name shall they be called; and they are mine."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 26:17 - 18)

It seems that "my people" are synonymous  to those that take upon themselves the name of Christ.

Mosiah 24

Something struck me this morning as I read Mormon's account of Alma's people in the land of Helam as heavy burdens are placed on them by Amulon.  After they were commanded not to pray or pray vocally, we read that -

"...it came to pass that the voice of the Lord came to them in their afflictions, saying: Lift up your heads and be of good comfort, for I know of the covenant which ye have made unto me; and I will covenant with my people and deliver them out of bondage.
14 And I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage; and this will I do that ye may stand as witnesses for me hereafter, and that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their afflictions."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 24:13 - 14)

And then  -

"...it came to pass that so great was their faith and their patience that the voice of the Lord came unto them again, saying: Be of good comfort, for on the morrow I will deliver you out of bondage."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 24:16)

I note that the voice of the Lord did not come only to Alma, but, it seems to me, to all or to most of them for it says in both cases that "the voice of the Lord came to them".  These words of Mormon seem intentional for specifically then wrote that the Lord -

"...said unto Alma: Thou shalt go before this people, and I will go with thee and deliver this people out of bondage."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 24:17)

What a wonderful thought that all or most of the people were entitled to hear the voice of the Lord and receive comfort and guidance.

Mosiah 23

I don't believe that every major difficulty in our lives is God caused.  Most difficulties and trials I believe are God allowed due to the natural nature of this world.  But Mormon taught -

"Nevertheless the Lord seeth fit to chasten his people; yea, he trieth their patience and their faith.
22 Nevertheless—whosoever putteth his trust in him the same shall be lifted up at the last day.  Yea, and thus it was with this people."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 23:21 - 22)

Much like a truly loving and wise parent, giving everything to our children as they request would be foolish.  In some cases, wise parents put their children in challenging situations, because they love them.  In doing so, they prove their children and their children prove themselves.

Thus is God's great and infinite wisdom, it becomes clear, because He loves, He "trieth our patience and our faith".

Mosiah 21

I blogged the other day of Abinadi's warning that if the people did not repent, that -

"...when they shall cry unto me I will be slow to hear their cries..."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 11:24)

Sure enough, we learn of the people of Limhi that -

"...they did humble themselves even in the depths of humility; and they did cry mightily to God; yea, even all the day long did they cry unto their God that he would deliver them out of their afflictions.
15 And now the Lord was slow to hear their cry because of their iniquities; nevertheless the Lord did hear their cries, and began to soften the hearts of the Lamanites that they began to ease their burdens; yet the Lord did not see fit to deliver them out of bondage."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 21:14 - 15)

What a confirming statement.  But I note that at the stage of great humility and repentance He did "ease their burdens".  We find later after complete repentance, He did deliver them.

Mosiah 18

At the Waters of Mormon, Alma teaches his followers what it means to take upon oneself the name of Christ saying -

"...as ye are desirous to come into the fold of God, and to be called his people..."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 18:8)

Being called "His people" suggests taking upon themselves the name of Christ...being -

"...willing to bear one another's burdens, that they may be light;
9 Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death..."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 18:8 - 9)

Being baptized -

"...as a testimony that ye have entered into a covenant to serve him until you are dead..."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 18:13)

And as priests and saints, they -

"...were not to depend upon the people for their support; but for their labor they were to receive the grace of God, that they might wax strong in the Spirit, having the knowledge of God, that they might teach with power and authority from God."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 18:26)

In my mind, taking upon the name of Christ mans to serve him for His grace.

Mosiah 16

Before the wicked priests of king Noah, Abinadi quoted Isaiah saying -

"...for they shall see eye to eye when the Lord shall bring again Zion..."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 12:22)

He later suggests the meaning the meaning herein of "eye to eye" saying -

"...The time shall come when all shall see the salvation of the Lord; when every nation, kindred, tongue, and people shall see eye to eye and shall confess before God that his judgments are just."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 16:1)

This would suggest to me that at a point in time (the judgement) we will look into the eyes of the Savior and will agree that his judgments are just.  Obviously for the righteous, they shall -

"Break forth into joy, sing together..."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 15:30)

Mosiah 15

In much of Isaiah's writings, I find much of his words can be rightfully interpreted many ways

As Abinadi explains the words of Isaiah, he uses the word "Father" which could easily be interpreted as God the Father of our spirits, and the Savior, being the Father of heaven and earth and of salvation.  As Abinadi speaks of the Father and the Son before the wicked priests of Noah, it becomes very clear (a least to me)of whom he is speaking as he declares -

"...thus becoming the Father and Son—
4 And they are one God, yea, the very Eternal Father of heaven and of earth."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 15:3 - 4)

Even though we have a Father in Heaven who is God and was previously before our spirit existence, Abinadi declares of the Savior that He would "become" the Father of salvation.

Mosiah 13

Abinadi confirms that  after ancient writings went -

"...forth by the hand of the twelve apostles of the Lamb, from the Jews unto the Gentiles, thou seest the formation of that great and abominable church, which is most abominable above all other churches; for behold, they have taken away from the gospel of the Lamb many parts which are plain and most precious; and also many covenants of the Lord have they taken away."  (Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 13:26)

He does this as he asks Noah and his wicked priests concerning the coming of Christ -

"...did not Moses prophesy unto them concerning the coming of the Messiah, and that God should redeem his people?  Yea, and even all the prophets who have prophesied ever since the world began—have they not spoken more or less concerning these things?"  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 13:33)

Obviously many plain and precious parts of scripture including covenants were taken away or lost.

Moisah 11

I believe I have blogged on this before but I think the words of Abinadi are a significant warning -

"...it shall come to pass that except this people repent and turn unto the Lord their God, they shall be brought into bondage; and none shall deliver them, except it be the Lord the Almighty God.
24 Yea, and it shall come to pass that when they shall cry unto me I will be slow to hear their cries..."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 11:23 - 24)

And -

"...except they repent in sackcloth and ashes, and cry mightily to the Lord their God, I will not hear their prayers, neither will I deliver them out of their afflictions..."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 11:25)

I think of commandments such as failure to live the law of tithing.  If we fail to do so, not only will our confidence be minimal in our pleadings for help, but the Lord has specifically declared the He "will be slow to hear their cries".  What a great warning.

Mosiah 10

As we liken the scriptures to our day, king Zeniff says of the Lamanites. that  -

"They were a wild, and ferocious, and a blood-thirsty people, believing in the tradition of their fathers, which is this—Believing that they were driven out of the land of Jerusalem because of the iniquities of their fathers, and that they were wronged in the wilderness by their brethren, and they were also wronged while crossing the sea;
13 And again, that they were wronged while in the land of their first inheritance, after they had crossed the sea, and all this because that Nephi was more faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord—therefore he was favored of the Lord, for the Lord heard his prayers and answered them, and he took the lead of their journey in the wilderness.
14 And his brethren were wroth with him because they understood not the dealings of the Lord; they were also wroth with him upon the waters because they hardened their hearts against the Lord.
15 And again, they were wroth with him when they had arrived in the promised land, because they said that he had taken the ruling of the people out of their hands; and they sought to kill him.
16 And again, they were wroth with him because he departed into the wilderness as the Lord had commanded him, and took the records which were engraven on the plates of brass, for they said that he robbed them.
17 And thus they have taught their children that they should hate them, and that they should murder them, and that they should rob and plunder them, and do all they could to destroy them; therefore they have an eternal hatred towards the children of Nephi."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 10:12 - 17)

I note one central theme why the Lamanites hated the Nephites...they were taught that they were "wronged".  They were victims.  They were lazy and idolatrous just because they were wronged and everybody else is the cause of it.  Sounds much like our problems today, where those that are in poverty or told that they have be wronged and suppressed.  Some things never change.

Mosiah 7

King Limhi, a righteous man who was a son of a very wicked king, provided some very wise and truthful comments -

"...if ye will turn to the Lord with full purpose of heart, and put your trust in him, and serve him with all diligence of mind, if ye do this, he will, according to his own will and pleasure, deliver you out of bondage."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 7:33)

The promise is "he will" but "according to his own will and pleasure".  Which in my mind also suggests his timing.  His "pleasure" would be focused on what is the very best for us.

The second observation was -

"O how marvelous are the works of the Lord, and how long doth he suffer with his people; yea, and how blind and impenetrable are the understandings of the children of men; for they will not seek wisdom, neither do they desire that she should rule over them!
21 Yea, they are as a wild flock which fleeth from the shepherd, and scattereth, and are driven, and are devoured by the beasts of the forest."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 8:20 - 21)

From what I have observed over the years is exactly that which man will not seek wisdom as explained by Limhi.  Yet the Lord continues to suffer with his people.  His hand is extended still.

Mosiah 5

As king Benjamin taught concerning the covenant (right hand) of taking upon themselves the name of Christ he teaches -

"...how knoweth a man the master whom he has not served, and who is a stranger unto him, and is far from the thoughts and intents of his heart?"  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 5:13)

"Therefore, I would that ye should be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in good works, that Christ, the Lord God Omnipotent, may seal you his, that you may be brought to heaven, that ye may have everlasting salvation and eternal life, through the wisdom, and power, and justice, and mercy of him who created all things, in heaven and in earth, who is God above all."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 5:15)

Taking upon the name of Christ means to serve him, always abounding in good works.

Mosiah 4

Mosiah spoke of when we receive forgiveness and a remission of sins, that -

"...our hearts may be purified..."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 4:2)

And -

"...having peace of conscience..."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 4:3)

Also as he teaches us in  -

"...for the sake of retaining a remission of your sins from day to day, that ye may walk guiltless before God—I would that ye should impart of your substance to the poor, every man according to that which he hath, such as feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and administering to their relief, both spiritually and temporally, according to their wants."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 4:26)

Even suggesting -

"...will succor those that stand in need of your succor; ye will administer of your substance unto him that standeth in need; and ye will not suffer that the beggar putteth up his petition to you in vain, and turn him out to perish."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 4:16)

In our day there are many supposed beggars that are scams, thus he adds -

"...see that all these things are done in wisdom and order..."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 4:27)

Mosiah 3

King Benjamin teaches one of the most popular and most quoted verses in his speech -

"For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 3:19)

I specifically note "becometh" a saint and as a child.  Becometh a child as king Benjamin suggests is "to be willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father".  That is the challenge we all face.

Mosiah 3

As king Benjamin relates the things that an angel told him in the night concerning the coming of Jesus Christ and his atonement, he teaches -

"...behold, and also his blood atoneth for the sins of those who have fallen by the transgression of Adam, who have died not knowing the will of God concerning them, or who have ignorantly sinned."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 3:11)

But then he adds -

"But wo, wo unto him who knoweth that he rebelleth against God! For salvation cometh to none such except it be through repentance and faith on the Lord Jesus Christ."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 3:12)

At first one may think that it may be better not to know that know.  These two verses also led my thoughts to the baptism of children where in multiple places it is declared -

"...little children need no repentance, neither baptism. Behold, baptism is unto repentance to the fulfilling the commandments unto the remission of sins.
12 But little children are alive in Christ, even from the foundation of the world..."  (Book of Mormon | Moroni 8:11 - 12)

For -

"...all children who die before they arrive at the years of accountability are saved in the celestial kingdom of heaven."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 137:10)

Also knowing -

"...chosen messengers went forth to declare the acceptable day of the Lord and proclaim liberty to the captives who were bound, even unto all who would repent of their sins and receive the gospel."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 138:31)

And -

"The dead who repent will be redeemed, through obedience to the ordinances of the house of God..."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 138:58)

I may be going out on a limb here but even though children are saved in the kingdom of God with no baptism as well as the ignorant are not held responsible, all because of the atonement of Jesus Christ, I also realize that there is an eternal law of agency.  This would suggest to me that under any condition if anyone used their agency in any act of sin or rebellion, that cannot be saved "except it be through repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ".

In my mind, this would suggest that our love to those we have a relationship with (sealed or family), we would always work to teach our children repentance and faith in the Savior.  It would seem to me an eternal effort.

Mosiah 2

King Benjamin outlines the way to misery and the way to happiness, teaching -

"...I say unto you, my brethren, that after ye have known and have been taught all these things, if ye should transgress and go contrary to that which has been spoken, that ye do withdraw yourselves from the Spirit of the Lord, that it may have no place in you to guide you in wisdom's paths that ye may be blessed, prospered, and preserved—
37 I say unto you, that the man that doeth this, the same cometh out in open rebellion against God; therefore he listeth to obey the evil spirit, and becometh an enemy to all righteousness; therefore, the Lord has no place in him, for he dwelleth not in unholy temples.
38 Therefore if that man repenteth not, and remaineth and dieth an enemy to God, the demands of divine justice do awaken his immortal soul to a lively sense of his own guilt, which doth cause him to shrink from the presence of the Lord, and doth fill his breast with guilt, and pain, and anguish, which is like an unquenchable fire, whose flame ascendeth up forever and ever.
39 And now I say unto you, that mercy hath no claim on that man; therefore his final doom is to endure a never–ending torment."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 2:36 - 39)

On the contrary -

"And moreover, I would desire that ye should consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God.  For behold, they are blessed in all things, both temporal and spiritual; and if they hold out faithful to the end they are received into heaven, that thereby they may dwell with God in a state of never–ending happiness."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 2:41)

Most of us focus only in the pursuit of happiness in this life.  Not to types in the eternity..."never-ending torment" and "never-ending happiness".  Obviously the latter is most important.

Mosiah 1

As king Benjamin said he would proclaim one of his sons, Mosiah, to be king over the people, he also tells him -

"...moreover, I shall give this people a name, that thereby they may be distinguished above all the people which the Lord God hath brought out of the land of Jerusalem..."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 1:11)

I gave a talk relating to this in a recent stake priesthood leadership meeting -

Stake Conference – Priesthood Leadership Session

February 2016

As many of you have experienced, several years ago while serving as a ward Young Mens president, as I walked into sacrament meeting one Sunday morning, I immediately noticed that there was only one priest sitting at the sacrament table.  Placing my things on one of the pews while motioning to the sacrament table, I told my wife that I would be back after the sacrament.  She understandably nodded and I proceeded to the sacrament table to assist in the administration.

As I was sitting down, the young man happily proposed that if I would pray over the bread, he would be happy to do the water.  With a nod, I agreed, and we reverently waited to administer the sacrament.  As the sacrament hymn was being sung, like always, we reverently stood and broke the bread.

When it was time for the prayer, I knelt down as I had done so many times before, slid out the little shelf with the built-in microphone and the attached sacrament prayers, it quickly became evident that things were not as they had been before.

With a little preface, that Sunday morning was just following that somewhat traumatic experience in the lives of some adults when their vision goes out of focus and suddenly, almost overnight, they are desperate need of reading glasses.  Unfortunately, that morning I had not yet developed a good habit of bringing reading glasses with me.

So as I knelt to speak into the microphone, the words on the prayer cards were nothing but a complete blur.  Being somewhat shocked, I tried to move a little bit back in hopes the words would appear more into focus.  But the farther I moved back, the farther the microphone moved away.  I suddenly realized that by doing so, there is no way the prayer could be heard.  And to be honest, I just couldn’t get back far enough to bring the words into focus.

I panicked!  What to do?  There in great anxiety and what seemed to me to be an embarrassing eternity…all I could come up with was…”well, okay, here it goes” and I began to repeat the words I had heard so many times before…but having never really sat down and memorized.

“O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it, that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him and keep his commandments which he has given them; that they may always have his Spirit to be with them.  Amen.”  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 20:77)

As I completed the prayer, I refused to look over at the bishopric.  I knew if that wasn’t right I would never get to right…I don’t even know if I got it right here tonight.  But I do believe the other priest looked over at the bishopric and we continued in the administration of the sacrament.

If by chance I didn’t get the prayer right, I don’t know if the bishopric decided to extend compassion …or that maybe they weren’t even paying attention.  But one thing I’m grateful for, I didn’t have to try to repeat it again.  I learned a great lesson that morning, I never leave home without my reading glasses.  But just in case I ever do, all my talks are generally printed in font size 16 just in case.

My intentions today in sharing this experience is not about administering the sacrament.  But more about the important words of the sacramental prayer or the covenants wherein that are spoken….specifically where we covenant –

“…that [we] are willing to take upon [us] the name of thy Son…”  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 20:77)

Recently, those words have pricked my conscience. To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure I understood exactly what they meant…What does it mean to take upon oneself the name of Christ?   In that it seemed to weigh heavy on my mind, I began some research in hopes to better understand the meaning of that covenant I make every week.

This is the focus of my remarks this afternoon.  That is, what does it mean to be willing to take upon oneself the name of Jesus Christ?

I began my research reviewing the great and last message of King Benjamin.  As the king learned that his people had believed –

“All his words” (Mosiah 5:2)…and that they were “willing to enter into a covenant with their God” –

King Benjamin then followed –

“…I would that ye should take upon you the name of Christ…”  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 5:8)

Suggesting that in order to do so, they must be –

“…willing …to do his will, and to be obedient to his commandments in all things that he shall command…”  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 5:5)

As well as that they –

“…should be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in good works…”  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 5:15)

As I pondered those words, it struck me that taking upon oneself the name of Christ must really mean, 1) we must be willing to do His will which obviously includes keeping the commandments, and 2) we must also be willing to do His work or as King Benjamin said, “always abounding in good works”.

Thus as we take upon us the name of Christ, we represent Him and thereby must be willing to do His will and do His work.  As we do, King Benjamin said –

“…ye shall be called the children of Christ, his sons, and his daughters…therefore, ye are born of him and have become his sons and his daughters.”  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 5:7)

Later, Moroni would summarize these two requirements when we take upon ourselves His name explaining –

“…none were received unto baptism save they took upon them the name of Christ, having a determination to serve him to the end.”  (Book of Mormon | Moroni 6:3)

The Savior taught much the same thing to his disciples in the Americas as they took upon them His name, instructing –

“…ye know the things that ye must do in my church; for the works which ye have seen me do that shall ye also do; for that which ye have seen me do even that shall ye do…”  (Book of Mormon | 3 Nephi 27:21)

The necessity of doing His will and doing His works becomes more apparent as Alma asked his followers at the Waters of Mormon as they too were about to enter into a covenant or in other words as Alma said,  “to be called His people”, that they must be  –

“…willing to bear one another's burdens, that they may be light;

9 Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that [they] may be in…”  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 18:8 - 9)

Obviously, there is no question that this is the Savior’s will and His work.  Moroni would later address his contemporaries –

“…Why are ye ashamed to take upon you the name of Christ?”  (Book of Mormon | Mormon 8:38)

…Asking –

“Why do ye adorn yourselves with that which hath no life, and yet suffer the hungry, and the needy, and the naked, and the sick and the afflicted to pass by you, and notice them not?”  (Book of Mormon | Mormon 8:39)

Again, obviously, caring for the poor and needy, is the will and the work of the Savior.

Thus what I discovered in my research was “the will of the Lord” and “and the works of the Lord” are the two keys in representing or taking upon oneself a name.  Which would then also suggest that taking upon oneself a name then is more a principle of action than that of receiving a title.

This is apparent in the Lord’s great covenant with Abraham, where the Lord promised –

“…for as many as receive this Gospel shall be called after thy name, and shall be accounted thy seed…”  (Pearl of Great Price | Abraham 2:10)

Thus in accepting the name of Abraham, the responsibility became –

“…that in their hands they shall bear this ministry and Priesthood unto all nations…”  (Pearl of Great Price | Abraham 2:9)

What I consider to be a very simple example in our stake of taking upon oneself a name is that of Kyle Whittingham, a member of our stake high council.  But in this case, I will tend to interchange name with color.

Many years ago, Brother Whittingham took upon him the color, of an institution as a player in the sport of football.  Taking upon him the color of that institution, Kyle was named to the first team all-WAC team earning Defensive Player of the Year Honors and MVP of the 1981 Holiday Bowl.  A definite example of doing the will and work of that institution.

As many of you know, in recent years, he took upon him the color of another institution.  Now as a coach, he has won multiple bowl games, including beating Alabama in the 2008 Sugar Bowl.  That year, he led his team to an undefeated season and was recognized in by some associations essentially as co-national champions.  He was awarded The American Football Coaches Association National Coach of the Year Ward as well as many other awards.  Again honoring and representing the color of that institution.

Some of you may think that my motive of using this example this afternoon is in hope that I might gett some free tickets for next fall.  Maybe! But I will confess that I tend to follow the other color just a little bit more.

But what my real motive was is to provide what I consider a very good example of what it really means to be willing to take upon oneself a name or in this case, the color of an institution.  I believe taking upon oneself a name has a great deal with representing, and doing the works and will of that organization.

Just a thought, speaking of the Lord’s institution, I would argue that its color is –

“…light and truth.”  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 93:36)

As I continued to ponder the meaning of taking upon the name of Christ, my thoughts turned to the symbolism of Lehi’s great vision of the Tree of Life, as he shares –

“…I beheld myself that I was in a dark and dreary waste.

8 And after I had traveled for the space of many hours in darkness, I began to pray unto the Lord that he would have mercy on me, according to the multitude of his tender mercies.
9 And it came to pass after I had prayed unto the Lord I beheld a large and spacious field.”  (Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 8:7 - 9)

I have wondered at times, “what is the meaning of this large and spacious field” Lehi saw for it becomes apparent that somewhere within this large a spacious field there was –

“…a tree, whose fruit was desirable to make one happy.”  (Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 8:10)

In as much of Lehi’s dream is symbolic in nature, the thoughts that came to me is that this large and spacious field must represent the opportunity to serve the Tree of Life, to do His will, to do His work.  In other words, may I suggest, the large and spacious field represents the covenant we make to take upon ourselves the name of Christ.

The opportunity to serve Him, do his will and works, appears almost endless, for Lehi even recalled that this –

“…large and spacious field, [was] as if it had been a world.”  (Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 8:20)

Such great opportunities to serve, in my mind, might include ministering, teaching, proclaiming the gospel, the work of salvation, visiting and caring for the poor and needy, family history and temple work, church service missionary opportunities…I put that in for President Maxfield.  The list goes on and on…again, as if there is a world of opportunity.

This past Christmas, as a gift, a good member of this stake, delivered to me my actual high school student record with all my classes and grades…even including my ACT scores.  What a nice gift, but not something I would want my posterity to see.

As I reviewed those records, it reminded me of the somewhat distracted, non-focused, or better said by Lehi, a dark and dreary waste of that period of my life.  And one thing I know for sure, my first quarter at the “U” was really a waste!

But then, much like Lehi, I too –

“…began to pray unto the Lord that he would have mercy on me, according to the multitude of his tender mercies” (Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 8:8)

It was then that I also beheld a large a spacious field, but in my case at that time, it was the mission field.  Obviously, to obtain that large and spacious field I had to satisfy the requirements of entering in at the gate, repenting and pressing forward on the strait and narrow path while holding fast to the rod of iron.

As I did so, I had the privilege of serving in a portion of that large and spacious field in the Alberta-Saskatchewan Mission.  I can testify that it was while serving in that field that I clearly remember approaching and partaking of the fruit of the Tree of Life.

I have ever since strived to remain steadfast and immovable in the large and spacious field wherein the Tree of Life is.

Over the years, as I have strived to serve in that field, I have also observed that there are forbidden paths that tend to lead away from this field where I have witnessed a few becoming lost.  In some cases, it was because they became distracted by the materialism of the world, while others because of a mist of darkness or temptations of the devil. There were some that have become ashamed or embarrassed of His work and will.   But in most cases, they have been lead away because of pride where they thought themselves prudent and wise and as a result the master of the vineyard asked –

“…Who is it that has corrupted my vineyard?”  (Book of Mormon | Jacob 5:47)

He answered His own question –

“….Is it not the loftiness of thy vineyard—have not the branches thereof overcome the roots which are good?  And because the branches have overcome the roots thereof, behold they grew faster than the strength of the roots, taking strength unto themselves.”  (Book of Mormon | Jacob 5:48)

“O that cunning plan of the evil one!  O the vainness, and the frailties, and the foolishness of men!  When they are learned they think they are wise, and they hearken not unto the counsel of God, for they set it aside, supposing they know of themselves, wherefore, their wisdom is foolishness and it profiteth them not.”  (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 9:28)

We must remember that as leaders serving in this large and spacious field or vineyard, the Savior –

“…commandeth that there shall be no priestcrafts; for, behold, priestcrafts are that men preach and set themselves up for a light unto the world, that they may get gain and praise of the world; but they seek not the welfare of Zion.”  (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 26:29)

Thus instructing –

“…the laborer in Zion shall labor for Zion; for if they labor for money (and I will add praise, or pride) they shall perish.”  (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 26:31)

And thus because of pride, many wander off in forbidden paths.  In other words, they cease to keep the covenant in taking upon them the name of Christ…the very source of their strength.  For the Savior explained –

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”  (New Testament | John 15:5)

In order to avoid the forbidden path of pride and materialism, Jacob counseled his people –

“Think of your brethren like unto yourselves, and be familiar with all and free with your substance…”  (Book of Mormon | Jacob 2:17)

As I close, let me repeat that again –

Think of your brethren like unto yourself…you are no better than they are in the eyes of the Lord.

Be familiar with all…visit them and become their friend.

Be free with your substance…which would also include your time.

May we remember as we partake of the sacrament that –

“…none [should be] received…save they [take] upon them the name of Christ, having a determination to serve him to the end.”  (Book of Mormon | Moroni 6:3)

Mosiah 1

The Mutual theme this year talks about "feasting upon the word of Christ".  Of the scriptures, king Benjamin taught his sons -

"O my sons, I would that ye should remember that these sayings are true, and also that these records are true. And behold, also the plates of Nephi, which contain the records and the sayings of our fathers from the time they left Jerusalem until now, and they are true; and we can know of their surety because we have them before our eyes.
7 And now, my sons, I would that ye should remember to search them diligently, that ye may profit thereby..."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 1:6 - 7)

The question would be, search them diligently for what?

I would suggest answers to happiness in this life as well as the conditions for eternal life or exaltation.

Mosiah 1

If you don't understand the value of the scriptures to parents, Mosiah  -

"...taught them concerning the records which were engraven on the plates of brass, saying: My sons, I would that ye should remember that were it not for these plates, which contain these records and these commandments, we must have suffered in ignorance, even at this present time, not knowing the mysteries of God.
4 For it were not possible that our father, Lehi, could have remembered all these things, to have taught them to his children, except it were for the help of these plates; for he having been taught in the language of the Egyptians therefore he could read these engravings, and teach them to his children, that thereby they could teach them to their children, and so fulfilling the commandments of God, even down to this present time."  (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 1:3 - 4)

It would not be possible for any parent to remember all these things without the scriptures.
