Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Alma 20

We learn of Aaron had his brethren that -

"...it was their lot to have fallen into the hands of a more hardened and a more stiffnecked people; therefore they would not hearken unto their words, and they had cast them out, and had smitten them, and had driven them from house to house, and from place to place, even until they had arrived in the land of Middoni; and there they were taken and cast into prison, and bound with strong cords, and kept in prison for many days..."  (Alma 20:30)

Mormon makes it clear with "it war their lot" that just because our missionary experiences are not the same, some with success and others unsuccessful, it does not reflect on ones righteousness or favoritism.

Alma 19

As the Spirit is poured out upon the Lamanites, Mormon explains -

"...we see that his arm is extended to all people who will repent and believe on his name."  (Alma 19:36)

Alma 18

It was because of Ammon's great kindness and service that king Lamoni inquired -

"...if thou wilt tell me concerning these things..."  (Alma 18:21)

and -

"...Yea, I will believe all thy words...."  (Alma 18:23)

For me, service and kindness is the key to ministering and missionary work.   They will inquire to know more!

Alma 17

Even though Mormon describes the nature of the Lamanites, he also suggest that qualifications for the atonement of Jesus Christ are the same, teaching that they were -

"...a wild and a hardened and a ferocious people; a people who delighted in murdering the Nephites, and robbing and plundering them; and their hearts were set upon riches, or upon gold and silver, and precious stones; yet they sought to obtain these things by murdering and plundering, that they might not labor for them with their own hands.
15 Thus they were a very indolent people, many of whom did worship idols, and the curse of God had fallen upon them because of the traditions of their fathers; notwithstanding the promises of the Lord were extended unto them on the conditions of repentance."  (Alma 17:14–15)

The promises of eternal life and the atonement of Jesus Christ are extended to all "on the conditions of repentance".

Alma 15

One of the promises of the Book of Mormon is that if you are faithful, you will "prosper in the land".  We read of Amulek -

"...having forsaken all his gold, and silver, and his precious things, which were in the land of Ammonihah, for the word of God, he being rejected by those who were once his friends and also by his father and his kindred;
17 Therefore, after Alma having established the church at Sidom, seeing a great check, yea, seeing that the people were checked as to the pride of their hearts, and began to humble themselves before God, and began to assemble themselves together at their sanctuaries to worship God before the altar, watching and praying continually, that they might be delivered from Satan, and from death, and from destruction—
18 Now as I said, Alma having seen all these things, therefore he took Amulek and came over to the land of Zarahemla, and took him to his own house, and did administer unto him in his tribulations, and strengthened him in the Lord."  (Alma 15:16–18)

Obviously, when the Lord promises that we will prosper in the land, it is from an eternal perspective.

Alma 14

Many people suggest that when a miracle takes place it causes the wicked to repent.  I find it interesting that when the prison walls fell and all the leaders of Ammonihah were killed, and Alma and Amulek walked alone that -

"...the people having heard a great noise came running together by multitudes to know the cause of it; and when they saw Alma and Amulek coming forth out of the prison, and the walls thereof had fallen to the earth, they were struck with great fear, and fled from the presence of Alma and Amulek even as a goat fleeth with her young from two lions; and thus they did flee from the presence of Alma and Amulek."  (Alma 14:29)

They didn't fall in fear and repentance, they fled.  I believe this would be the same today.

Alma 13

Alma teaches of those that are ordained to the priesthood -

"...being called and prepared from the foundation of the world according to the foreknowledge of God, on account of their exceeding faith and good works; in the first place being left to choose good or evil; therefore they having chosen good, and exercising exceedingly great faith, are called with a holy calling, yea, with that holy calling which was prepared with, and according to, a preparatory redemption for such."  (Alma 13:3)

That brings me great comfort.

Alma 12

Alma teaches an interesting doctrine to the people of Ammonihah -

"...It is given unto many to know the mysteries of God; nevertheless they are laid under a strict command that they shall not impart only according to the portion of his word which he doth grant unto the children of men, according to the heed and diligence which they give unto him.
10 And therefore, he that will harden his heart, the same receiveth the lesser portion of the word; and he that will not harden his heart, to him is given the greater portion of the word, until it is given unto him to know the mysteries of God until he know them in full.
11 And they that will harden their hearts, to them is given the lesser portion of the word until they know nothing concerning his mysteries; and then they are taken captive by the devil, and led by his will down to destruction. Now this is what is meant by the chains of hell."  (Alma 12:9–11)

This suggests to me that those that do not receive exaltation will have limited knowledge through eternity.

Alma 11

Amulek teaches concerning the resurrection -

"The spirit and the body shall be reunited again in its perfect form; both limb and joint shall be restored to its proper frame, even as we now are at this time..."  (Alma 11:43)

"Perfect form" suggests to me that I will be pleased with the results.  I also suggests some individuality.

Alma 10

Speaking with the people of Ammonihah, Amulek refers to the words of king Mosiah -

"...that if the time should come that the voice of this people should choose iniquity, that is, if the time should come that this people should fall into transgression, they would be ripe for destruction."  (Alma 10:19)

Then Amulek shares who and how -

"...if it were not for the prayers of the righteous, who are now in the land, that ye would even now be visited with utter destruction; yet it would not be by flood, as were the people in the days of Noah, but it would be by famine, and by pestilence, and the sword."  (Alma 10:22)

"...therefore, if ye will cast out the righteous from among you then will not the Lord stay his hand; but in his fierce anger he will come out against you; then ye shall be smitten by famine, and by pestilence, and by the sword; and the time is soon at hand except ye repent."  (Alma 10:23)

This applies to today.

Alma 9

Alma prophesizes of  the people of Ammonihah destruction if they didn't repent  -

"...having had so much light and so much knowledge given unto them of the Lord their God..."  (Alma 9:19)

Adding -

"Yea, and after having been delivered of God out of the land of Jerusalem, by the hand of the Lord; having been saved from famine, and from sickness, and all manner of diseases of every kind; and they having waxed strong in battle, that they might not be destroyed; having been brought out of bondage time after time, and having been kept and preserved until now; and they have been prospered until they are rich in all manner of things—
23 And now behold I say unto you, that if this people, who have received so many blessings from the hand of the Lord, should transgress contrary to the light and knowledge which they do have, I say unto you that if this be the case, that if they should fall into transgression, it would be far more tolerable for the Lamanites than for them."  (Alma 9:22–23)

I note especially in our day, "from sickness, and all manner of diseases of every kind".

Alma 8

Though Alma immediately returned to Ammonihah after a visit with the angel, we read that upon meeting with Amulek that -

"...Alma tarried many days with Amulek before he began to preach unto the people."  (Alma 8:27)

Obviously, the Spirit wanted Alma to prepare Amulek for missionary service.  It reminds me of what the Lord said to Hyrum Smith -

"...Seek not to declare my word, but first seek to obtain my word, and then shall your tongue be loosed; then, if you desire, you shall have my Spirit and my word, yea, the power of God unto the convincing of men."  (Doctrine and Covenants 11:21)

Alma 7

After Alma teaches the saints in Gideon concerning the blessings of the atonement of Jesus Christ, he admonishes -

"...I say unto you come and fear not, and lay aside every sin, which easily doth beset you, which doth bind you down to destruction, yea, come and go forth, and show unto your God that ye are willing to repent of your sins and enter into a covenant with him to keep his commandments, and witness it unto him this day by going into the waters of baptism.
16 And whosoever doeth this, and keepeth the commandments of God from thenceforth, the same will remember that I say unto him, yea, he will remember that I have said unto him, he shall have eternal life, according to the testimony of the Holy Spirit, which testifieth in me."  (Alma 7:15–16)

The words of "which easily doth beset you" suggests to me that this is a continual ongoing process.

Alma 5

As Alma teaches that because his fathers followers become humble and full of faith, he explains that the Savior -

"...changed their hearts; yea, he awakened them out of a deep sleep, and they awoke unto God. Behold, they were in the midst of darkness; nevertheless, their souls were illuminated by the light of the everlasting word".  (Alma 5:7)

Of this Alma asked -

"...on what conditions are they saved? Yea, what grounds had they to hope for salvation?..."  (Alma 5:10)

Obviously, the conditions of having Him change our hearts is faith and humility.

Alma 5

Alma, speaking of his fathers people, first asks -

"...on what conditions are they saved? Yea, what grounds had they to hope for salvation? What is the cause of their being loosed from the bands of death, yea, and also the chains of hell?"  (Alma 5:10)

He answers with the following conditions -

"...behold, he preached the word unto your fathers, and a mighty change was also wrought in their hearts, and they humbled themselves and put their trust in the true and living God. And behold, they were faithful until the end; therefore they were saved."  (Alma 5:13)

Alma 4

After a significant war with the Amlicites and the Lamanites, Mormon records -

"...the people were afflicted, yea, greatly afflicted for the loss of their brethren, and also for the loss of their flocks and herds, and also for the loss of their fields of grain, which were trodden under foot and destroyed by the Lamanites.
3 And so great were their afflictions that every soul had cause to mourn; and they believed that it was the judgments of God sent upon them because of their wickedness and their abominations; therefore they were awakened to a remembrance of their duty.
4 And they began to establish the church more fully..."  (Alma 4:2–4)

This may be why the Lord has allowed the invisible war of Covid-19 in our day.

Alma 3

As the Amlicites set of mark of red upon their foreheads, Mormon makes it clear -

"Thus the word of God is fulfilled, for these are the words which he said to Nephi: Behold, the Lamanites have I cursed, and I will set a mark on them that they and their seed may be separated from thee and thy seed, from this time henceforth and forever, except they repent of their wickedness and turn to me that I may have mercy upon them.
15 And again: I will set a mark upon him that mingleth his seed with thy brethren, that they may be cursed also.
16 And again: I will set a mark upon him that fighteth against thee and thy seed.
17 And again, I say he that departeth from thee shall no more be called thy seed; and I will bless thee, and whomsoever shall be called thy seed, henceforth and forever; and these were the promises of the Lord unto Nephi and to his seed.
18 Now the Amlicites knew not that they were fulfilling the words of God when they began to mark themselves in their foreheads; nevertheless they had come out in open rebellion against God; therefore it was expedient that the curse should fall upon them.
19 Now I would that ye should see that they brought upon themselves the curse; and even so doth every man that is cursed bring upon himself his own condemnation."  (Alma 3:14–19)

Obviously, there was a difference between the mark and the curse.  The curse being cut off from the presence of God or in words, not having the Holy Ghost be with them.  The mark being one of "darkness".  We see this today where some mark themselves.

Alma 1

It seems that no sooner than the people of Nephi are given "freedom of speech", that Nehor went -

"...about among the people, preaching to them that which he termed to be the word of God, bearing down against the church; declaring unto the people that every priest and teacher ought to become popular; and they ought not to labor with their hands, but that they ought to be supported by the people.
4 And he also testified unto the people that all mankind should be saved at the last day, and that they need not fear nor tremble, but that they might lift up their heads and rejoice; for the Lord had created all men, and had also redeemed all men; and, in the end, all men should have eternal life.
5 And it came to pass that he did teach these things so much that many did believe on his words, even so many that they began to support him and give him money."  (Alma 1:3–5)

Alma defines this as priestcraft.  In my mind, priestcraft extends beyond religion, but anyone that preaches commandments and teachings contrary to the prophets for gain is priestcraft.

Mosiah 29

What rings true to me is king Mosiah words -

"...if the time comes that the voice of the people doth choose iniquity, then is the time that the judgments of God will come upon you; yea, then is the time he will visit you with great destruction even as he has hitherto visited this land."  (Mosiah 29:27)

And they think this is caused by climate change.
