Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Luke 11

The Savior warned the religious elite -

"Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets."  (Luke 11:43)

Again, a warning of pride to us all.

Matthew 18

A teaching of the Savior concerning justification and the power of Christ unto salvation is -

"...Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven."  (Matthew 18:3–4)

Luke 10

After the Seventy returned from their missionary efforts they said -

"...again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name."  (Luke 10:17)

Following which the Lord warned -

"Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven."  (Luke 10:20)

In my mind, the Lord is warning against pride.  Humility and meekness is the law of justification that allows one to receive the power of godliness.

Mark 16

Mark records -

"Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils."  (Mark 16:9)

Both Luke and Mark testify that Mary Magdalene had been possessed at one time with seven evil spirits.

Just a thought...If I came back from the dead (resurrected), I would first go see my wife.

Mark 15

Mark makes the point that -

"...Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid."  (Mark 15:47)

In other words, these are witnesses and additional testimonies of the things as they happened.

Mark 14

Knowing that Mark learned much of his gospel or story from Peter, he writes -

"...as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:
67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.
68 But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.
69 And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them.
70 And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilæan, and thy speech agreeth thereto.
71 But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak.
72 And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept."  (Mark 14:66–72)

I believe this is the testimony of Peter

Mark 9

Probably from Peter, Mark learns that -

"...Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.
3 And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.
4 And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.
5 And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
6 For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid.
7 And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
8 And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.
9 And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead."  (Mark 9:2–9)

I believe that much more transpired at this time that are so sacred that Peter, James and John never shared with anyone.

Matthew 16

As the Pharisees and Sadducees came seeking a sign, the Savior responded -

"...When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.
3 And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?"  (Matthew 16:2–3)

Those that study the scriptures, especially the Book of Mormon, are given signs of the times in our day of His coming.

Mark 14

As the Savior and His apostles went our to the mount of Olives, the Savior said -

"...All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered."  (Mark 14:27)

Of course, Peter responded -

"...Although all shall be offended, yet will not I." (Mark 14:29)

And as we know, he did so thrice.  I was touched by David J. Ridges

"...Perhaps Peter’s example here can be a lesson to us. We think we are strong in the gospel and claim to be willing to live it at all costs. Yet, sometimes we falter and give in to temptation which disappoints us and makes us all the more determined to be stronger in the faith"  (Ridges, David J.. The New Testament Made Easier".
