Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Alma 13

As Alma taught the people of Ammonihah concerning having received the priesthood in our pre-mortal existence he said -

"...thus they have been called to this holy calling on account of their faith, while others would reject the Spirit of God on account of the hardness of their hearts and blindness of their minds, while, if it had not been for this they might have had as great privilege as their brethren.
5 Or in fine, in the first place they were on the same standing with their brethren; thus this holy calling being prepared from the foundation of the world for such as would not harden their hearts, being in and through the atonement of the Only Begotten Son, who was prepared—" (Book of Mormon | Alma 13:4 - 5)

We learn that in our pre-mortal existence, we were born as spirit offspring being "on the same standing" or in other words being equal in opportunity or right to choose righteousness and pursue happiness or to do that of hardening our hearts. Those that were found worthy were "called to this holy calling" or ordained because of faithfulness. The same pattern we find in this life. But there is one more very important essential doctrine that Alma taught, again -

"...being prepared from the foundation of the world for such as would not harden their hearts, being in and through the atonement of the Only Begotten Son..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 13:5)

Those words in themselves suggest follows the teaching that the atonement is "an infinite atonement" meaning that it's power and blessings extended from the foundation of the world or in other words, it's power and blessings exercised in the pre-mortal existence. The doctrine of faith and repentance was practice there. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland said -

"...that even in the Grand Council of Heaven he loved us and was wonderfully strong, that we triumphed even there by the power of Christ and our faith in the blood of the Lamb (see Rev. 12:10–11)."

We find it a truth in the Lord said -

"...I will give unto you a pattern in all things, that ye may not be deceived..." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 52:14)

Alma 12

I believe that the 12th chapter of Alma provides one of the most clear explanations of the plan of salvation. It is in this instruction to the people of Ammonihah that Alma teaches -

"Therefore God gave unto them commandments, after having made known unto them the plan..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 12:32)

I intentionally did not complete that verse with "of redemption" because the first plan he gave to Adam and Eve was -

"Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it..." (Pearl of Great Price | Moses 2:28)

At the same time He -

"...took the man, and put him into the Garden of Eden, to dress it, and to keep it.
16 And I, the Lord God, commanded the man, saying: Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat,
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it, nevertheless, thou mayest choose for thyself, for it is given unto thee; but, remember that I forbid it, for in the day thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." (Pearl of Great Price | Moses 3:15 - 17)

In my mind, this was the plan. Adam and Eve had there agency to choose to remain in the garden or be cast out and fulfil the part of the plan in multiplying and replenishing the earth...but in this case they would also have to die. Adam and Eve opted, with influence from Satan (because Satan had his interests at stake), to choose or use their agency to multipy and replenish the earth. And with that - die for -

"...we see that death comes upon mankind, yea, the death which has been spoken of by Amulek, which is the temporal death; nevertheless there was a space granted unto man in which he might repent; therefore this life became a probationary state; a time to prepare to meet God; a time to prepare for that endless state which has been spoken of by us, which is after the resurrection of the dead." (Book of Mormon | Alma 12:24)

Herein lies the second plan, or original plan, or plan of redemption -

"...which was laid from the foundation of the world, there could have been no resurrection of the dead; but there was a plan of redemption laid, which shall bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, of which has been spoken.
26 And now behold, if it were possible that our first parents could have gone forth and partaken of the tree of life they would have been forever miserable, having no preparatory state; and thus the plan of redemption would have been frustrated, and the word of God would have been void, taking none effect." (Book of Mormon | Alma 12:25 - 26)

"Wherefore, he gave commandments unto men, they having first transgressed the first commandments as to things which were temporal, and becoming as Gods, knowing good from evil, placing themselves in a state to act, or being placed in a state to act according to their wills and pleasures, whether to do evil or to do good—" (Book of Mormon | Alma 12:31)

The first set of commandments were part of the first plan which placed man in a state to act in righteousness or wickedness. Then with the plan of redemption, the Lord provides His second commandments -

"...God gave unto them commandments, after having made known unto them the plan of redemption, that they should not do evil, the penalty thereof being a second death, which was an everlasting death as to things pertaining unto righteousness..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 12:32)

And this second set of commandments included -

"...God did call on men, in the name of his Son, (this being the plan of redemption which was laid) saying: If ye will repent and harden not your hearts, then will I have mercy upon you, through mine Only Begotten Son;
34 Therefore, whosoever repenteth, and hardeneth not his heart, he shall have claim on mercy through mine Only Begotten Son, unto a remission of his sins; and these shall enter into my rest.
35 And whosoever will harden his heart and will do iniquity, behold, I swear in my wrath that he shall not enter into my rest." (Book of Mormon | Alma 12:33 - 35)

Thus of this second set of commandments, Alma taught -

"...my brethren, seeing we know these things, and they are true, let us repent, and harden not our hearts, that we provoke not the Lord our God to pull down his wrath upon us in these his second commandments which he has given unto us; but let us enter into the rest of God, which is prepared according to his word." (Book of Mormon | Alma 12:37)

Alma 12

After Amulek had seem to catch Zeezrom in his lying motives, Alma stands to address Zeezrom and the people. What I find to be of great worth is the method by which Alma uses with his attacker, Zeezrom, to some how allow him embarrassment and a way out. A way out that would allow meaningful conversation without a direct attack on his pride and ego. Alma seems to place blame of Zeezrom's attack and motives to the Satan as Alma responds -

"...thou seest that we know that thy plan was a very subtle plan, as to the subtlety of the devil, for to lie and to deceive this people that thou mightest set them against us, to revile us and to cast us out—
5 Now this was a plan of thine adversary, and he hath exercised his power in thee." (Book of Mormon | Alma 12:4 - 5)

In my mind, Alma is suggesting to Zeezrom that his emotions and actions were motivated or influence by Satan for -

"...this was a snare of the adversary, which he has laid to catch this people, that he might bring you into subjection unto him, that he might encircle you about with his chains, that he might chain you down to everlasting destruction, according to the power of his captivity." (Book of Mormon | Alma 12:6)

By seeming to blame Satan allowed to Zeezrom an opportunity to escape this influence and choose to follow his teachings and testimony. It apparently woworked as -

"...Zeezrom began to tremble more exceedingly, for he was convinced more and more of the power of God..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 12:7)

We know of this affect as a humble and teachable -

"...Zeezrom began to inquire of them diligently, that he might know more concerning the kingdom of God..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 12:8)

Alma provides us a great teaching method as we are confronted by those who would want to challenge us. We don't want contention but communication. The Spirit cannot influence with the spirit of contention. Again, the method is don't blame the individual, but blame the influences around him with the explanation that the Lord can influence us for good.

Alma 11

The conversation between Zeezrom and Amulek provides some of the purest doctrine of the atonement, where in an attempt to destroy Amulek, Zeezrom asks (speaking of the Son of God) -

"...Shall he save his people in their sins?..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 11:34)

I believe that there are many that are Christians would answer - yes! But Amulek answered -

"I say unto you he shall not, for it is impossible for him to deny his word." (Book of Mormon | Alma 11:34)

Amulek would further explain -

"...I say unto you again that he cannot save them in their sins; for I cannot deny his word, and he hath said that no unclean thing can inherit the kingdom of heaven; therefore, how can ye be saved, except ye inherit the kingdom of heaven? Therefore, ye cannot be saved in your sins." (Book of Mormon | Alma 11:37)

Helaman would later reference this conversation as he taught his sons -

"...remember also the words which Amulek spake unto Zeezrom, in the city of Ammonihah; for he said unto him that the Lord surely should come to redeem his people, but that he should not come to redeem them in their sins, but to redeem them from their sins.
11 And he hath power given unto him from the Father to redeem them from their sins because of repentance..." (Book of Mormon | Helaman 5:10 - 11)

For -

"...he shall come into the world to redeem his people; and he shall take upon him the transgressions of those who believe on his name; and these are they that shall have eternal life, and salvation cometh to none else.
41 Therefore the wicked remain as though there had been no redemption made, except it be the loosing of the bands of death; for behold, the day cometh that all shall rise from the dead and stand before God, and be judged according to their works." (Book of Mormon | Alma 11:40 - 41)

Refering to Alma's question - on what conditions are we saved"

"...Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost." (Pearl of Great Price | Articles of Faith 1:4)

And endure to the end for -

"...if they will not repent and believe in his name, and be baptized in his name, and endure to the end, they must be damned; for the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has spoken it." (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 9:24)

Alma 10

Again, I would like to liken the scriptures to us and our day. As Amulek attempted to preach the gospel of truth amongst the people of Ammonihah -

"...there were some among them who thought to question them, that by their cunning devices they might catch them in their words, that they might find witness against them..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 10:13)

In Amulek's day, it was the lawyers, but in our day, it seems to be politicians, media, and pundits that seek in every way to discredit those that believe in God and desire to keep His commandments for -

"...these lawyers were learned in all the arts and cunning of the people; and this was to enable them that they might be skilful in their profession." (Book of Mormon | Alma 10:15)

As Amulek called the people to repentance, it was those that were learned in their crafts that responded -

"...This man doth revile against our laws which are just, and our wise lawyers whom we have selected." (Book of Mormon | Alma 10:24)

As the laws given by Mosiah and probably the founders of Ammonihah were orginally according to the laws given by the hand of the Lord, Amulek teaches -

"...O ye wicked and perverse generation, why hath Satan got such great hold upon your hearts? Why will ye yield yourselves unto him that he may have power over you, to blind your eyes, that ye will not understand the words which are spoken, according to their truth?
26 For behold, have I testified against your law? Ye do not understand; ye say that I have spoken against your law; but I have not, but I have spoken in favor of your law, to your condemnation." (Book of Mormon | Alma 10:25 - 26)

Like our present constitution was in accordance to divine principles, those that preach repentance in our day are in accordance to that of the constitution. But in order to justify their wicked behavior, judges continue to rule in that manner. Amulek would then respond to these lawyers and judges -

"...that the foundation of the destruction of this people is beginning to be laid by the unrighteousness of your lawyers and your judges." (Book of Mormon | Alma 10:27)

For -

"...well did Mosiah say, who was our last king, when he was about to deliver up the kingdom, having no one to confer it upon, causing that this people should be governed by their own voices—yea, well did he say that if the time should come that the voice of this people should choose iniquity, that is, if the time should come that this people should fall into transgression, they would be ripe for destruction." (Book of Mormon | Alma 10:19)

Alma 9

I am not aware of the types of wickedness the people of Ammonihah were involved in, just that they were wicked, and as previously blogged, they were already planning to overthow the liberty of the people where Alma was told of the Lord -

"...they do study at this time that they may destroy the liberty of thy people, (for thus saith the Lord) which is contrary to the statutes, and judgments, and commandments which he has given unto his people." (Book of Mormon | Alma 8:17)

It is apparent they wanted to justify their wickeness by changing the laws adn commandments given by the hand of the Lord. So as Alma begins to call the people to repentance, I can't help but compare their reaction to that of our day, where -

"...they began to contend with me, saying:
2 Who art thou? Suppose ye that we shall believe the testimony of one man..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 9:1 - 2)

"And they said also: We will not believe thy words if thou shouldst prophesy that this great city should be destroyed in one day.
5 Now they knew not that God could do such marvelous works, for they were a hard-hearted and a stiffnecked people.
6 And they said: Who is God, that sendeth no more authority than one man among this people, to declare unto them the truth of such great and marvelous things?" (Book of Mormon | Alma 9:4 - 6)

Many reporter and bloggers reflect much the same attitude today. Who is God? But whether they believe or not, I believe there is a litmus test -

"...Inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments, ye shall prosper in the land? And again it is said that: Inasmuch as ye will not keep my commandments ye shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord." (Book of Mormon | Alma 9:13)

That will be the ultimate test, but sadly, being cut off may be to late to change.

Alma 8

As king Mosiah presented the proposal to end the reign of kings and create a democracy amongst the Nephites, he said -

"...let us appoint judges, to judge this people according to our law; and we will newly arrange the affairs of this people, for we will appoint wise men to be judges, that will judge this people according to the commandments of God." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 29:11)

And in doing so -

"...choose you by the voice of this people, judges, that ye may be judged according to the laws which have been given you by our fathers, which are correct, and which were given them by the hand of the Lord." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 29:25)

As we liken the scriptures to ourselves, I believe the founding fathers of the constitution were wise men that enacted laws which were correct that were given by the hand of the Lord.

As Alma, the president of the Church in his day, was on his way to the city of Aaron, having been s rejected by the wicked people of Ammonihah -

"...being weighed down with sorrow, wading through much tribulation and anguish of soul, because of the wickedness of the people who were in the city of Ammonihah..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 8:14)

And Angel appeared as said -

"...Alma; therefore, lift up thy head and rejoice, for thou hast great cause to rejoice; for thou hast been faithful in keeping the commandments of God..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 8:15)

It is then that the angel said -

"...I am sent to command thee that thou return to the city of Ammonihah, and preach again unto the people of the city; yea, preach unto them. Yea, say unto them, except they repent the Lord God will destroy them." (Book of Mormon | Alma 8:16)

The reason that they would be destroyed was not only because of there wickedness but -

"...they do study at this time that they may destroy the liberty of thy people, (for thus saith the Lord) which is contrary to the statutes, and judgments, and commandments which he has given unto his people." (Book of Mormon | Alma 8:17)

This is a great warning to us in our day. Originally, the constitution and bill of rights were based on the teachings and commandments of God. But now, just as in the days of Ammonihah, the people even now to study how to destroy our liberty by changing the statutes as judgements to those that are not in compliance with the laws of God. For an example, we see this in laws contrary to self-reliance, agency, staying out of debt, and marraige. The warning is again, "except they repent the Lord God will destroy them."

Alma 7

As Alma teaches the people of the Gideon, like many prophets before, he first teaches the doctrine of Christ having taught the plan and the atonement of Jesus Christ -

"Now I say unto you that ye must repent, and be born again; for the Spirit saith if ye are not born again ye cannot inherit the kingdom of heaven; therefore come and be baptized unto repentance, that ye may be washed from your sins, that ye may have faith on the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sins of the world, who is mighty to save and to cleanse from all unrighteousness." (Book of Mormon | Alma 7:14)

That is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism for the remission of sins and receiving the Spirit or the Gift of the Holy Ghost. Then Alma adds the requirements of enduring to the end -

"And now I would that ye should be humble, and be submissive and gentle; easy to be entreated; full of patience and long-suffering; being temperate in all things; being diligent in keeping the commandments of God at all times; asking for whatsoever things ye stand in need, both spiritual and temporal; always returning thanks unto God for whatsoever things ye do receive.
24 And see that ye have faith, hope, and charity, and then ye will always abound in good works." (Book of Mormon | Alma 7:23 - 24)

And the promise of Christ is that -

"...may the Lord bless you, and keep your garments spotless, that ye may at last be brought to sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the holy prophets who have been ever since the world began, having your garments spotless even as their garments are spotless, in the kingdom of heaven to go no more out." (Book of Mormon | Alma 7:25)

Alma 5

To members of the Church, being a responsible priesthood leader, Alma tells those in Zarahemla -

"...the Spirit saith unto me, yea, crieth unto me with a mighty voice, saying: Go forth and say unto this people—Repent, for except ye repent ye can in nowise inherit the kingdom of heaven." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:51)

He then explains what it means to repent or that which they are in need of repentance-

"...can ye be puffed up in the pride of your hearts; yea, will ye still persist in the wearing of costly apparel and setting your hearts upon the vain things of the world, upon your riches?
54 Yea, will ye persist in supposing that ye are better one than another; yea, will ye persist in the persecution of your brethren, who humble themselves and do walk after the holy order of God, wherewith they have been brought into this church, having been sanctified by the Holy Spirit, and they do bring forth works which are meet for repentance—
55 Yea, and will you persist in turning your backs upon the poor, and the needy, and in withholding your substance from them?
56 And finally, all ye that will persist in your wickedness..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:53 - 56)

He could easily be talking to the people of our day. The consequence is great for he warns -

"...Behold, the ax is laid at the root of the tree; therefore every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit shall be hewn down and cast into the fire, yea, a fire which cannot be consumed, even an unquenchable fire. Behold, and remember, the Holy One hath spoken it." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:52)

To avoid this terrible consequence, we must become as those -

"...brethren, who humble themselves and do walk after the holy order of God, wherewith they have been brought into this church, having been sanctified by the Holy Spirit, and they do bring forth works which are meet for repentance—" (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:54)

Of these -

"...the names of the righteous shall be written in the book of life, and unto them will I grant an inheritance at my right hand..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:58)

Alma 5

I have always been touched by the testimony given by Alma to the people of Zarahemla. That's because it is the same testimony I have. What is significant is that Alma had already experienced a resounding visit by an angel, but here he shares why he really knows these things are true as he asks -

"... Do ye not suppose that I know of these things myself?..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:45)

You would expect that he knows because he was visited by and angel, but instead answers -

"...Behold, I testify unto you that I do know that these things whereof I have spoken are true. And how do ye suppose that I know of their surety?
46 Behold, I say unto you they are made known unto me by the Holy Spirit of God. Behold, I have fasted and prayed many days that I might know these things of myself. And now I do know of myself that they are true; for the Lord God hath made them manifest unto me by his Holy Spirit; and this is the spirit of revelation which is in me." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:45 - 46)

And then he adds to his testimony -

"...moreover, I say unto you that it has thus been revealed unto me, that the words which have been spoken by our fathers are true, even so according to the spirit of prophecy which is in me, which is also by the manifestation of the Spirit of God.
48 I say unto you, that I know of myself that whatsoever I shall say unto you, concerning that which is to come, is true; and I say unto you, that I know that Jesus Christ shall come, yea, the Son, the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace, and mercy, and truth. And behold, it is he that cometh to take away the sins of the world, yea, the sins of every man who steadfastly believeth on his name." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:47 - 48)

Alma 5

As Alma recalls the captivity and deliverance of their fathers, he asks a several thought provoking question, two of which I find significant -

"And now I ask of you on what conditions are they saved? Yea, what grounds had they to hope for salvation?..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:10)

The first question suggests that there are conditions or obligations on our part to be saved. There is much written on essential ordinances and covenants that are conditions that must be satisfied, but there is apparently other conditions also as Alma asks -

"...have ye spiritually been born of God? Have ye received his image in your countenances? Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?" (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:14)

"Do ye exercise faith in the redemption of him who created you? Do you look forward with an eye of faith..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:15)

"Have ye walked, keeping yourselves blameless before God? Could ye say, if ye were called to die at this time, within yourselves, that ye have been sufficiently humble? That your garments have been cleansed and made white through the blood of Christ, who will come to redeem his people from their sins?" (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:27)

Alma even calls our attention to what many would consider small conditions that we generally don't place much merit on. But Alma does!

"...are ye stripped of pride? I say unto you, if ye are not ye are not prepared to meet God." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:28)

"...is there one among you who is not stripped of envy? I say unto you that such an one is not prepared..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:29)

"...is there one among you that doth make a mock of his brother, or that heapeth upon him persecutions?
31 Wo unto such an one, for he is not prepared..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:30 - 31)

These are just a few. Of such, King Benjamin commented -

...f"inally, I cannot tell you all the things whereby ye may commit sin; for there are divers ways and means, even so many that I cannot number them." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 4:29)

But even so, with all these conditions that must be satisfied, there is the second question that was so essential -

"...what grounds had they to hope for salvation?..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:10)

This can be answered with -

"...there shall be no other name given nor any other way nor means whereby salvation can come unto the children of men, only in and through the name of Christ, the Lord Omnipotent." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 3:17)

In summary -

"...it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do." (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 25:23)

Alma 4

As priesthood leaders contemplate the causes and effects over whom they preside, the events that followed a great mourning period after the loss of many nephite warriors gives some guidance. Mormon records two types of causes and effects in the Church writing that some of -

"...the people of the church began to be lifted up in the pride of their eyes, and to set their hearts upon riches and upon the vain things of the world, that they began to be scornful, one towards another, and they began to persecute those that did not believe according to their own will and pleasure." (Book of Mormon | Alma 4:8)

And as a result -

"...there began to be great contentions among the people of the church; yea, there were envyings, and strife, and malice, and persecutions, and pride, even to exceed the pride of those who did not belong to the church of God.
10 And thus ended the eighth year of the reign of the judges; and the wickedness of the church was a great stumbling-block to those who did not belong to the church; and thus the church began to fail in its progress." (Book of Mormon | Alma 4:9 - 10)

And with those of of great pride and and setting their hearts on the things of this world there became a -

"...great inequality among the people, some lifting themselves up with their pride, despising others, turning their backs upon the needy and the naked and those who were hungry, and those who were athirst, and those who were sick and afflicted." (Book of Mormon | Alma 4:12)

Again, the three great temptations of pride, materialism or worldly possessions, and immorality (not mentioned in these versed) seem to always cause a falling away. While at the same time, there -

"...others were abasing themselves, succoring those who stood in need of their succor, such as imparting their substance to the poor and the needy, feeding the hungry, and suffering all manner of afflictions, for Christ's sake, who should come according to the spirit of prophecy;
14 Looking forward to that day, thus retaining a remission of their sins; being filled with great joy because of the resurrection of the dead, according to the will and power and deliverance of Jesus Christ from the bands of death." (Book of Mormon | Alma 4:13 - 14)

And with that -

"...the persecutions which were heaped upon them by the remainder of his people, and seeing all their inequality, began to be very sorrowful; nevertheless the Spirit of the Lord did not fail him." (Book of Mormon | Alma 4:15)

What is a priesthood leader to do? As a example, Alma -

"...did that he himself might go forth among his people, or among the people of Nephi, that he might preach the word of God unto them, to stir them up in remembrance of their duty, and that he might pull down, by the word of God, all the pride and craftiness and all the contentions which were among his people, seeing no way that he might reclaim them save it were in bearing down in pure testimony against them." (Book of Mormon | Alma 4:19)

Alma 3

Nephi describes that in his day (what many consider too controversial in our day)that -

"...Inasmuch as they [the Lamanites} will not hearken unto thy words..." (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 5:20)

"...he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them.
22 And thus saith the Lord God: I will cause that they shall be loathsome unto thy people, save they shall repent of their iniquities.
23 And cursed shall be the seed of him that mixeth with their seed; for they shall be cursed even with the same cursing. And the Lord spake it, and it was done.
24 And because of their cursing which was upon them they did become an idle people, full of mischief and subtlety, and did seek in the wilderness for beasts of prey." (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 5:21 - 24)

What is important here is that the "skin of blackness" was not the curse. The curse was -

"...they shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord. And behold, they were cut off from his presence." (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 5:20)

The curse was then being cast of was loss of the Spirit of the Lord which caused the described event unless "they shall repent of their inquities". The darkness of the skin was not anything evil or bad, it was amongst those people only for a mark to help seperate those that had made sacred covenants and those that refused to.

After we witness the destruction of wicked Amlici and his followers and many Lamanites, Mormon provides greater insight where the Lord -

"...said to Nephi: Behold, the Lamanites have I cursed, and I will set a mark on them that they and their seed may be separated from thee and thy seed, from this time henceforth and forever, except they repent of their wickedness and turn to me that I may have mercy upon them.
15 And again: I will set a mark upon him that mingleth his seed with thy brethren, that they may be cursed also.
16 And again: I will set a mark upon him that fighteth against thee and thy seed." (Book of Mormon | Alma 3:14 - 16)

Again, the mark was not the curse but only a mark that they would be cursed living with those who refused to accept and covenant with the Lord. Thus they were cursed to lose the promptings of the Spirit having been cast off. Thus speaking of the rebellious of Amlici, using the same logic, Mormon explains -

"...for they also had a mark set upon them; yea, they set the mark upon themselves, yea, even a mark of red upon their foreheads.
14 Thus the word of God is fulfilled..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 3:13 - 14)

The mark of red that the Amlicites did to themselves was their own mark. But mingling with the unrepentent Lamanites, they accepted the curse.

Alma 1

I am always amazed how much the Book of Mormon relates to our day. In the first year of their new democracy, with Alma as the chief leader of the land, came a man named Nehor (using the doctrine of free speech) -

"...declaring unto the people that every priest and teacher ought to become popular; and they ought not to labor with their hands, but that they ought to be supported by the people.
4 And he also testified unto the people that all mankind should be saved at the last day, and that they need not fear nor tremble, but that they might lift up their heads and rejoice; for the Lord had created all men, and had also redeemed all men; and, in the end, all men should have eternal life." (Book of Mormon | Alma 1:3 - 4)

This seems to be the attitude of most people in our day in that there is no sin or it has no consequence and as long as you are considered "good", all will be well. What is interesting is that as -

"...he did teach these things so much that many did believe on his words, even so many that they began to support him and give him money." (Book of Mormon | Alma 1:5)

Nephi taught that -

"...priestcrafts; for, behold, priestcrafts are that men preach and set themselves up for a light unto the world, that they may get gain and praise of the world; but they seek not the welfare of Zion.
30 Behold, the Lord hath forbidden this thing..." (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 26:29 - 30)

This seems so prevelant, especially in political circles. As Nehor used his free speech, Alma comments -

"...were priestcraft to be enforced among this people it would prove their entire destruction." (Book of Mormon | Alma 1:12)

But even so, due to the law -

"...this did not put an end to the spreading of priestcraft through the land; for there were many who loved the vain things of the world, and they went forth preaching false doctrines; and this they did for the sake of riches and honor.
17 Nevertheless, they durst not lie, if it were known, for fear of the law, for liars were punished; therefore they pretended to preach according to their belief; and now the law could have no power on any man for his belief." (Book of Mormon | Alma 1:16 - 17)

Again, we see many leaders and celebrities of our day suggest that false doctrine are their beliefs. And of the righteous, these unbelievers cannot leave alone for like today -

"...they did persecute them, and afflict them with all manner of words, and this because of their humility; because they were not proud in their own eyes, and because they did impart the word of God, one with another, without money and without price." (Book of Mormon | Alma 1:20)

But nonetheless, the true followers of Jesus Christ -

"...were steadfast and immovable in keeping the commandments of God, and they bore with patience the persecution which was heaped upon them.
26 And when the priests left their labor to impart the word of God unto the people, the people also left their labors to hear the word of God. And when the priest had imparted unto them the word of God they all returned again diligently unto their labors; and the priest, not esteeming himself above his hearers, for the preacher was no better than the hearer, neither was the teacher any better than the learner; and thus they were all equal, and they did all labor, every man according to his strength.
27 And they did impart of their substance, every man according to that which he had, to the poor, and the needy, and the sick, and the afflicted; and they did not wear costly apparel, yet they were neat and comely." (Book of Mormon | Alma 1:25 - 27)

But what is interesting as these righteous members of the Church did live after the manner of "Zion" where -

"...the Lord called his people ZION, because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them."
(Pearl of Great Price | Moses 7:18)

When they lived after this manner of Zion, Mormon writes -

"And thus they did prosper and become far more wealthy than those who did not belong to their church." (Book of Mormon | Alma 1:31)

Isn't it interesting when we follow the commandments and teachings of the Lord, we will prosper in the land. Wealth acquired in this manner is after the Lord's way of prosperity.

Mosiah 29

As king Mosiah proposed to set up what appears to be a democracy amongst the Nephi, He provides some thought provoking principles of freedom for our day -

"Therefore, choose you by the voice of this people, judges, that ye may be judged according to the laws which have been given you by our fathers, which are correct, and which were given them by the hand of the Lord.
26 Now it is not common that the voice of the people desireth anything contrary to that which is right; but it is common for the lesser part of the people to desire that which is not right; therefore this shall ye observe and make it your law—to do your business by the voice of the people.
27 And if the time comes that the voice of the people doth choose iniquity, then is the time that the judgments of God will come upon you; yea, then is the time he will visit you with great destruction even as he has hitherto visited this land." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 29:25 - 27)

Our laws of today should be based upon the laws "by our fathers (the constitution), which are correct, and which were given them by the hand of the Lord." It is critical that our laws of today are those given by the hand of the Lord, not the wisdom of man. Mosiah warns the consequences of laws that follow the wisdom of man. Because Mosiah was a righteous king, never seeking power or payments from his people, he also opines -

"...I desire that this inequality should be no more in this land, especially among this my people; but I desire that this land be a land of liberty, and every man may enjoy his rights and privileges alike, so long as the Lord sees fit that we may live and inherit the land, yea, even as long as any of our posterity remains upon the face of the land." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 29:32)

And I specifically note of laziness and iniquity -

"...that these things ought not to be; but that the burden should come upon all the people, that every man might bear his part." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 29:34)

I believe this is the only way a democracy can continue and be sustained.

Mosiah 28

As Alma and the Sons of Mosiah repented of their sins, we witness a few more important aspects of true repentance that follow in that -

"...Alma began from this time forward to teach the people, and those who were with Alma at the time the angel appeared unto them, traveling round about through all the land, publishing to all the people the things which they had heard and seen, and preaching the word of God in much tribulation, being greatly persecuted by those who were unbelievers, being smitten by many of them.
33 But notwithstanding all this, they did impart much consolation to the church, confirming their faith, and exhorting them with long-suffering and much travail to keep the commandments of God." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 27:32 - 33)

"And they traveled throughout all the land of Zarahemla, and among all the people who were under the reign of king Mosiah, zealously striving to repair all the injuries which they had done to the church, confessing all their sins, and publishing all the things which they had seen, and explaining the prophecies and the scriptures to all who desired to hear them.
36 And thus they were instruments in the hands of God in bringing many to the knowledge of the truth, yea, to the knowledge of their Redeemer." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 27:35 - 36)

Restitution and blessing the lives of others seem to be part of the process as we become "new creatures". Much like Isiah and Abinadi taught of those that become the "Father's seed" -

"...how blessed are they! For they did publish peace; they did publish good tidings of good; and they did declare unto the people that the Lord reigneth." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 27:37)

So penitent were the Sons of Mosiah that -

"...they were desirous that salvation should be declared to every creature, for they could not bear that any human soul should perish; yea, even the very thoughts that any soul should endure endless torment did cause them to quake and tremble." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 28:3)

From being the worst of the worst to being the best of the best required a great transition for -

"...the Spirit of the Lord work upon them, for they were the very vilest of sinners. And the Lord saw fit in his infinite mercy to spare them; nevertheless they suffered much anguish of soul because of their iniquities, suffering much and fearing that they should be cast off forever." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 28:4)

Mosiah 27

Mosiah, in all his wisdom, gave -

"...a strict command throughout all the churches that there should be no persecutions among them, that there should be an equality among all men;
4 That they should let no pride nor haughtiness disturb their peace; that every man should esteem his neighbor as himself, laboring with their own hands for their support.
5 Yea, and all their priests and teachers should labor with their own hands for their support, in all cases save it were in sickness, or in much want; and doing these things, they did abound in the grace of God.
6 And there began to be much peace again in the land..." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 27:3 - 6)

It appears the "equality" spoken was an equality of freedom, opportunity, and and responsibility for self-reliance. As the people were given this opportunity and responsibility -

"...the Lord did visit them and prosper them, and they became a large and wealthy people." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 27:7)

Even in Mosiah's day, when we keep the commandments and and industrious, and invisible hand seems to provide an improved and properous society. I also noticed that there was still a responsibility to to care for those that could not be self-reliat such as those that -

"...were in sickness, or in much want; and doing these things, they did abound in the grace of God." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 27:5)

I see this responsibility falling on the Church and people, not necessarily the role of government.

The main topic of this chapter was the conversion of Alma (son of Alma) and the sons of Mosiah. These were unbelieving young men going to destroy the Church and living in all manner of inquity. As they did, much like Paul, and angel appeared revealing -

"Behold, the Lord hath heard the prayers of his people, and also the prayers of his servant, Alma, who is thy father; for he has prayed with much faith concerning thee that thou mightest be brought to the knowledge of the truth; therefore, for this purpose have I come to convince thee of the power and authority of God, that the prayers of his servants might be answered according to their faith." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 27:14)

I note that Alma's father not only prayed, but prayed "in much faith". Even all the Lord's servants prayed in faith to protect the saints of God. Their prayers were not necessarily that Alma would repent, only that Alma would come to a "knowledge of the truth" - in in other words, receive a testimony. Agency and conversion was then left to Alma. As Alma used his agency to repent and be converted he testifies -

"...I have repented of my sins, and have been redeemed of the Lord; behold I am born of the Spirit.
25 And the Lord said unto me: Marvel not that all mankind, yea, men and women, all nations, kindreds, tongues and people, must be born again; yea, born of God, changed from their carnal and fallen state, to a state of righteousness, being redeemed of God, becoming his sons and daughters;
26 And thus they become new creatures; and unless they do this, they can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 27:24 - 26)

It seems that all three members of the Godhead can be considered a "father" in some aspect as we learn that Alma was "born of the Spirit".

Mosiah 26

As Alma was troubled and faced the burden of what to do with members of the Church that had and were committing serious transgressions -

"...he went and inquired of the Lord what he should do concerning this matter, for he feared that he should do wrong in the sight of God." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 26:13)

It was only -

"...after he had poured out his whole soul to God, the voice of the Lord came to him..." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 26:14)

I'm sure that one of the reasons Alma was troubled so was that he recognized that at one time, he was in the same boat. I'm sure he wondered if he was worthy to judge another because of that. It is this matter the Lord addressed first saying -

"Blessed art thou, Alma, and blessed are they who were baptized in the waters of Mormon. Thou art blessed because of thy exceeding faith in the words alone of my servant Abinadi." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 26:15)

"Yea, blessed is this people who are willing to bear my name; for in my name shall they be called; and they are mine." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 26:18)

"For behold, in my name are they called; and if they know me they shall come forth, and shall have a place eternally at my right hand." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 26:24)

It seems that if we truly have faith in Jesus Christ and repent, that all is behind us and we are worthy saints to serve him...yet at the same time, I believe there is a little more sense of understanding, forgiveness and compassion in the individual. What a great blessing to have the Lord confirm "blessed art thou". The Lord also tells Alma that -

"...because thou hast inquired of me concerning the transgressor, thou art blessed." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 26:19)

And then the Lord provides this great instruction -

"...Go; and whosoever transgresseth against me, him shall ye judge according to the sins which he has committed; and if he confess his sins before thee and me, and repenteth in the sincerity of his heart, him shall ye forgive, and I will forgive him also.
30 Yea, and as often as my people repent will I forgive them their trespasses against me." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 26:29 - 30)

And -

"...those that would not confess their sins and repent of their iniquity, the same were not numbered among the people of the church, and their names were blotted out." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 26:36)

And of those that sit in judgement -

"...ye shall also forgive one another your trespasses; for verily I say unto you, he that forgiveth not his neighbor's trespasses when he says that he repents, the same hath brought himself under condemnation." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 26:31)

In my mind, it becomes clear that those that sit in judgement, that there purpose is to hear and discipline in such a manner as directed by the Spirit to allow the transgressor to experience adequate "Godly sorrow" or "sore repentance" such that the individual may "truly" repent to be blessed as a full citizen with the saints as was Alma

Mosiah 24

Of anything we learn in the Book of Mormon is the necessity of following our priesthood leaders or the Prophet. Generally we see over and over the necessity of the people of Nephi to go to war to protect themselves, their families, and their property. But as Alma and his followers had lived around a quarter of a century in the land of Helam -

"...behold an army of the Lamanites was in the borders of the land.
26 Now it came to pass that the brethren of Alma fled from their fields, and gathered themselves together in the city of Helam; and they were much frightened because of the appearance of the Lamanites." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 23:25 - 26)

Where we would normally see the Nephites defend themselves, their priesthood leader -

"...Alma went forth and stood among them, and exhorted them that they should not be frightened, but that they should remember the Lord their God and he would deliver them.
28 Therefore they hushed their fears, and began to cry unto the Lord that he would soften the hearts of the Lamanites, that they would spare them, and their wives, and their children.
29 And it came to pass that the Lord did soften the hearts of the Lamanites. And Alma and his brethren went forth and delivered themselves up into their hands; and the Lamanites took possession of the land of Helam." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 23:27 - 29)

I believe this righteous group was spared on this occasion as they followed the counsel of Alma. That doesn't mean that their lives were made easier for these were a righteous, prosperous followers of Christ. But even so -

"Nevertheless the Lord seeth fit to chasten his people; yea, he trieth their patience and their faith.
22 Nevertheless—whosoever putteth his trust in him the same shall be lifted up at the last day." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 23:21 - 22)

For Mormon explained -

"...I will show unto you that they were brought into bondage, and none could deliver them but the Lord their God, yea, even the God of Abraham and Isaac and of Jacob.
24 And it came to pass that he did deliver them, and he did show forth his mighty power unto them, and great were their rejoicings." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 23:23 - 24)

Though they were brought into captivity and bore heavy burdens, they remained prayerful and faithful and -

"...did pour out their hearts to him; and he did know the thoughts of their hearts.
13 And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord came to them in their afflictions, saying: Lift up your heads and be of good comfort, for I know of the covenant which ye have made unto me; and I will covenant with my people and deliver them out of bondage.
14 And I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage; and this will I do that ye may stand as witnesses for me hereafter, and that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their afflictions.
15 And now it came to pass that the burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 24:12 - 15)

Eventually, having been tried and chastened -

"...the voice of the Lord came unto them again, saying: Be of good comfort, for on the morrow I will deliver you out of bondage.
17 And he said unto Alma: Thou shalt go before this people, and I will go with thee and deliver this people out of bondage." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 24:16 - 17)

Again the prophet spoke and these people of great faith followed his counsel and were miraculously delivered from the Lamanites. Even after they had made their escape to another land -

"...the Lord said unto Alma: Haste thee and get thou and this people out of this land, for the Lamanites have awakened and do pursue thee; therefore get thee out of this land, and I will stop the Lamanites in this valley that they come no further in pursuit of this people." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 24:23)

Again they followed their priesthood leader and -

"...departed out of the valley, and took their journey into the wilderness.
25 And after they had been in the wilderness twelve days they arrived in the land of Zarahemla; and king Mosiah did also receive them with joy."
(Book of Mormon | Mosiah 24:24 - 25)

We will always be tested and tried to see if we will follow the prophet.

Mosiah 23

Yesterday, I blogged about Godly sorrow and repentance. On his behalf, Alma taught much the same doctrine. Speaking of being considered one of king Noah's wicked priests, he said -

"...I myself was caught in a snare, and did many things which were abominable in the sight of the Lord..." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 23:9)

And then in true repentance he explained to his followers -

"...which caused me sore repentance;
10 Nevertheless, after much tribulation, the Lord did hear my cries, and did answer my prayers, and has made me an instrument in his hands in bringing so many of you to a knowledge of his truth." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 23:9 - 10)

He specifically notes "sore" repentance, prayer, and personal tribulation in this process. This obviously was not a simple process. And then, in great humility, acknowledges in all his effort -

"Nevertheless, in this I do not glory, for I am unworthy to glory of myself." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 23:11)

Very simply, Alma brings a great deal of insight to Paul's words "Godly sorrow".

Mosiah 21

Paul wrote the Corinthians -

...I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 7:9 - 10)

The Lord is interested in the type of sorrow Godly sorrow) that brings repentance sufficient to bring the gift of salvation. We see this process somewhat amongst the people of Limhi as -

"...there was a great mourning and lamentation among the people of Limhi..." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 21:9)

And -

"...there were a great many widows in the land, and they did cry mightily from day to day..." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 21:10)

This sorrow did not seem sufficient. After a time -

"...they did humble themselves even to the dust, subjecting themselves to the yoke of bondage, submitting themselves to be smitten, and to be driven to and fro, and burdened, according to the desires of their enemies.
14 And they did humble themselves even in the depths of humility; and they did cry mightily to God; yea, even all the day long did they cry unto their God that he would deliver them out of their afflictions." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 21:13 - 14)

It seems at this point the people are beginning to experience Godly sorrow, but -

"...the Lord was slow to hear their cry because of their iniquities; nevertheless the Lord did hear their cries, and began to soften the hearts of the Lamanites that they began to ease their burdens; yet the Lord did not see fit to deliver them out of bondage.
16 And it came to pass that they began to prosper by degrees in the land..." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 21:15 - 16)

Godly sorrow unto repentance then must be sufficient to never fall away again or in other words sufficient unto salvation. Though the people continued to experience Godly sorrow, patience and show true repentance, the Lord was working in the hearts of those in Zarahemla to send a rescue party. Later, when their repentance was sufficient unto salvation we learn of their deliverance.

Mosiah 19

As Mormon relates the story of the downfall of king Noah and his people, he provides some insight of the interests of wicked leaders that seek power and authority over others. First, as the people rebelled and Gideon was about to slay Noah -

"...the king cried out in the anguish of his soul, saying: Gideon, spare me, for the Lamanites are upon us, and they will destroy us; yea, they will destroy my people." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 19:7)

Then Mormon outlines the truth -

"...now the king was not so much concerned about his people as he was about his own life..." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 19:8)

I sense this same truth holds even today and politicians are more interested in their jobs and agendas than the welfare of the people. Later as the Lamanites began to destroy his people -

"...the king commanded them that all the men should leave their wives and their children, and flee before the Lamanites." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 19:11)

It always seems that those that desire unrighteous power and dominion, it is always about them.
