Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

2 Nephi 13

As Isaiah prophesied concerning Israel in his day as well as our own, he said -

"Wo unto the wicked, for they shall perish; for the reward of their hands shall be upon them!

12 And my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they who lead thee cause thee to err and destroy the way of thy paths."  (2 Nephi 13:11–12)

What caught my thoughts this morning is "and women rule over them".  At first, many would think that Isaiah is suggesting that women are inferior.  I think it is just the opposite.  I believe that in our day, husbands and fathers of families are the culprit here leading women to manage or rule the family on their own.

2 Nephi 12

It appears to me that much of Isaiah's revelations are jointly his day and ours.  He states concerning Israel -

:O house of Jacob, come ye and let us walk in the light of the Lord; yea, come, for ye have all gone astray, every one to his wicked ways.

6 Therefore, O Lord, thou hast forsaken thy people, the house of Jacob, because they be replenished from the east, and hearken unto soothsayers like the Philistines, and they please themselves in the children of strangers.

7 Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land is also full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots.

8 Their land is also full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made.

9 And the mean man boweth not down, and the great man humbleth himself not, therefore, forgive him not.

10 O ye wicked ones, enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for the fear of the Lord and the glory of his majesty shall smite thee.

11 And it shall come to pass that the lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.a"  (2 Nephi 12:5–11)

2 Nephi 11

 Nephi states -

"...my soul delighteth in the covenants of the Lord which he hath made to our fathers..."  (2 Nephi 11:5)

Those are our promises and covenants.

2 Nephi 9

Jacob teaches of the Savior -

"...for behold, he suffereth the pains of all men, yea, the pains of every living creature, both men, women, and children, who belong to the family of Adam."  (2 Nephi 9:21)

Does that mean He suffered for each sin individually.  I don't believe so for Jacob taught -

"Wherefore, it must needs be an infinite atonement..."  (2 Nephi 9:7)

I my mind, He suffered sufficient that His pain would satisfy infinite justice in that He is also infinite.

2 Nephi 8

The Lord instructs righteous Israel, "us" in this day -

"Look unto Abraham, your father, and unto Sarah, she that bare you; for I called him alone, and blessed him.

3 For the Lord shall comfort Zion, he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving and the voice of melody.

4 Hearken unto me, my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation; for a law shall proceed from me, and I will make my judgment to rest for a light for the people."  (2 Nephi 8:2–4)

All of righteous Israel who have entered into covenants in our day are promised the same blessings of Abraham and Sarah.

2 Nephi 7

 The Lord asked Israel -

"...Have I put thee away, or have I cast thee off forever? For thus saith the Lord: Where is the bill of your mother’s divorcement? To whom have I put thee away, or to which of my creditors have I sold you? Yea, to whom have I sold you?..." (2 Nephi 7:1)

He then answered the truth -

"...Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.
2 Wherefore, when I came, there was no man; when I called, yea, there was none to answer. O house of Israel, is my hand shortened at all that it cannot redeem, or have I no power to deliver?"  (2 Nephi 7:1–2)

I think we should all remember that.

2 Nephi 6

Concerning the Savior's second coming, Jacob taught -

"...according to the words of the prophet, the Messiah will set himself again the second time to recover them; wherefore, he will manifest himself unto them in power and great glory, unto the destruction of their enemies, when that day cometh when they shall believe in him; and none will he destroy that believe in him."  (2 Nephi 6:14)

This suggests to me that anyone that believes in Him, which also suggests to me that would have to follow Him in some manner, will not be destroyed at His coming, whether on the covenant path or not.  I'm sure that with their agency that can accept His true doctrine or not.

2 Nephi 5

 Nephi tells us -

"...I, Nephi, did take my family, and also Zoram and his family, and Sam, mine elder brother and his family, and Jacob and Joseph, my younger brethren, and also my sisters, and all those who would go with me. And all those who would go with me were those who believed in the warnings and the revelations of God; wherefore, they did hearken unto my words."  (2 Nephi 5:6)

Here we learn that Nephi had sisters.  He doesn't tell us if these are his sisters married to the sons of Ishmael or others and even if they are married.

2 Nephi 4

 Even Nephi moaned -

"Nevertheless, notwithstanding the great goodness of the Lord, in showing me his great and marvelous works, my heart exclaimeth: O wretched man that I am! Yea, my heart sorroweth because of my flesh; my soul grieveth because of mine iniquities.

18 I am encompassed about, because of the temptations and the sins which do so easily beset me.

19 And when I desire to rejoice, my heart groaneth because of my sins..."  (2 Nephi 4:17–19)

It seems that the more righteous we become, the more we recognize our shortcomings.

2 Nephi 3

It was prophesied to Joseph of Egypt -

"...Joseph truly saw our day. And he obtained a promise of the Lord, that out of the fruit of his loins the Lord God would raise up a righteous branch unto the house of Israel..." (2 Nephi 3:5)

"...A seer shall the Lord my God raise up, who shall be a choice seer unto the fruit of my loins..."(2 Nephi 3:6)

"...a seer will I raise up out of the fruit of thy loins; and unto him will I give power to bring forth my word unto the seed of thy loins—and not to the bringing forth my word only, saith the Lord, but to the convincing them of my word, which shall have already gone forth among them."  (2 Nephi 3:11)

"...I will raise up unto the fruit of thy loins; and I will make for him a spokesman. And I, behold, I will give unto him that he shall write the writing of the fruit of thy loins, unto the fruit of thy loins; and the spokesman of thy loins shall declare it..."  (2 Nephi 3:18)

I just happen to be a fruit of the loins of Joseph.

2 Nephi 2

As we are taught much about agency and opposition in all things, Lehi explains the Law of Sacrifice, teaching -

"Wherefore, redemption cometh in and through the Holy Messiah; for he is full of grace and truth.

7 Behold, he offereth himself a sacrifice for sin, to answer the ends of the law, unto all those who have a broken heart and a contrite spirit; and unto none else can the ends of the law be answered."  (2 Nephi 2:6–7)

2 Nephi 1

As Lehi blesses and warns Laman and Lemuel, he states -

"But if ye will not hearken unto him I take away my first blessing, yea, even my blessing, and it shall rest upon him."  (2 Nephi 1:29)

As I have reviewed the words "first blessing", I have come to conclusion that the "first blessing" is the right to preside in regard to priesthood authority and keys.  This could also relate to terms like  king, boss, head, leader, etc.

1 Nephi 22

Speaking literally of our day, Nephi prophesied -

"...after our seed is scattered [including all of Israel] the Lord God will proceed to do a marvelous work among the Gentiles, which shall be of great worth unto our seed; wherefore, it is likened unto their being nourished by the Gentiles and being carried in their arms and upon their shoulders.

9 And it shall also be of worth unto the Gentiles; and not only unto the Gentiles but unto all the house of Israel, unto the making known of the covenants of the Father of heaven unto Abraham, saying: In thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.

10 And I would, my brethren, that ye should know that all the kindreds of the earth cannot be blessed unless he shall make bare his arm in the eyes of the nations.

11 Wherefore, the Lord God will proceed to make bare his arm in the eyes of all the nations, in bringing about his covenants and his gospel unto those who are of the house of Israel.

12 Wherefore, he will bring them again out of captivity, and they shall be gathered together to the lands of their inheritance; and they shall be brought out of obscurity and out of darkness; and they shall know that the Lord is their Savior and their Redeemer, the Mighty One of Israel."  (1 Nephi 22:8–12)

I note that "lands" is plural.  So there will be many lands of inheritance.

1 Nephi 21

The Lord promised Israel, through Isaiah -

"...thy walls are continually before me."  (1 Nephi 21:16)

In my mind, this means to me that the Lord is always aware of your challenges and afflictions, and He knows how to succor His people..

1 Nephi 20

Isaiah speaks of those that have entered into covenants (swear) saying -

"Hearken and hear this, O house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, or out of the waters of baptism, who swear by the name of the Lord, and make mention of the God of Israel..."  (1 Nephi 20:1)

But obviously they didn't keep their covenants in that -

"...they swear not in truth nor in righteousness."  (1 Nephi 20:1)

The Lord then mentions that if they had kept their covenants, their,-

"...peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea."  (1 Nephi 20:18)

1 Nephi 19

Nephi prophesizes that after those of Jerusalem crucified the Savior shall be scourged  by all people -

"..that day cometh, saith the prophet, that they no more turn aside their hearts against the Holy One of Israel, then will he remember the covenants which he made to their fathers.

16 Yea, then will he remember the isles of the sea; yea, and all the people who are of the house of Israel, will I gather in, saith the Lord, according to the words of the prophet Zenos, from the four quarters of the earth."  (1 Nephi 19:15–16)

In my mind, the "house of Israel" will be those that enter into the new and everlasting covenant and are faithful.  Thus the gathering of Israel includes all covenant people on both sides of the veil.
