Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Alma 8

As king Mosiah presented the proposal to end the reign of kings and create a democracy amongst the Nephites, he said -

"...let us appoint judges, to judge this people according to our law; and we will newly arrange the affairs of this people, for we will appoint wise men to be judges, that will judge this people according to the commandments of God." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 29:11)

And in doing so -

"...choose you by the voice of this people, judges, that ye may be judged according to the laws which have been given you by our fathers, which are correct, and which were given them by the hand of the Lord." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 29:25)

As we liken the scriptures to ourselves, I believe the founding fathers of the constitution were wise men that enacted laws which were correct that were given by the hand of the Lord.

As Alma, the president of the Church in his day, was on his way to the city of Aaron, having been s rejected by the wicked people of Ammonihah -

"...being weighed down with sorrow, wading through much tribulation and anguish of soul, because of the wickedness of the people who were in the city of Ammonihah..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 8:14)

And Angel appeared as said -

"...Alma; therefore, lift up thy head and rejoice, for thou hast great cause to rejoice; for thou hast been faithful in keeping the commandments of God..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 8:15)

It is then that the angel said -

"...I am sent to command thee that thou return to the city of Ammonihah, and preach again unto the people of the city; yea, preach unto them. Yea, say unto them, except they repent the Lord God will destroy them." (Book of Mormon | Alma 8:16)

The reason that they would be destroyed was not only because of there wickedness but -

"...they do study at this time that they may destroy the liberty of thy people, (for thus saith the Lord) which is contrary to the statutes, and judgments, and commandments which he has given unto his people." (Book of Mormon | Alma 8:17)

This is a great warning to us in our day. Originally, the constitution and bill of rights were based on the teachings and commandments of God. But now, just as in the days of Ammonihah, the people even now to study how to destroy our liberty by changing the statutes as judgements to those that are not in compliance with the laws of God. For an example, we see this in laws contrary to self-reliance, agency, staying out of debt, and marraige. The warning is again, "except they repent the Lord God will destroy them."
