Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Alma 5

As Alma recalls the captivity and deliverance of their fathers, he asks a several thought provoking question, two of which I find significant -

"And now I ask of you on what conditions are they saved? Yea, what grounds had they to hope for salvation?..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:10)

The first question suggests that there are conditions or obligations on our part to be saved. There is much written on essential ordinances and covenants that are conditions that must be satisfied, but there is apparently other conditions also as Alma asks -

"...have ye spiritually been born of God? Have ye received his image in your countenances? Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?" (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:14)

"Do ye exercise faith in the redemption of him who created you? Do you look forward with an eye of faith..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:15)

"Have ye walked, keeping yourselves blameless before God? Could ye say, if ye were called to die at this time, within yourselves, that ye have been sufficiently humble? That your garments have been cleansed and made white through the blood of Christ, who will come to redeem his people from their sins?" (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:27)

Alma even calls our attention to what many would consider small conditions that we generally don't place much merit on. But Alma does!

"...are ye stripped of pride? I say unto you, if ye are not ye are not prepared to meet God." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:28)

"...is there one among you who is not stripped of envy? I say unto you that such an one is not prepared..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:29)

"...is there one among you that doth make a mock of his brother, or that heapeth upon him persecutions?
31 Wo unto such an one, for he is not prepared..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:30 - 31)

These are just a few. Of such, King Benjamin commented -

...f"inally, I cannot tell you all the things whereby ye may commit sin; for there are divers ways and means, even so many that I cannot number them." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 4:29)

But even so, with all these conditions that must be satisfied, there is the second question that was so essential -

"...what grounds had they to hope for salvation?..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 5:10)

This can be answered with -

"...there shall be no other name given nor any other way nor means whereby salvation can come unto the children of men, only in and through the name of Christ, the Lord Omnipotent." (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 3:17)

In summary -

"...it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do." (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 25:23)
