Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Colossians 2

Paul taught the Romans -

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (New Testament | Romans 6:23)

There is no question that sin causes spiritual death. But I wonder if Paul is comparing "death" to true and complete repentance which requires "Godly sorrow" in -

"...that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation..." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 7:9 - 10)

It seems to me that Paul uses the analogy of death for repentance teaching -

"For we which live are alway[s] delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh." (New Testament | 2 Corinthians 4:11)

Paul taught the Colossians -
that -

"...in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses..."
(New Testament | Colossians 2:11 - 13)

Baptism is the ordinance that represents death and in conjuction with repentance we come forth "reborn". In such rebirth comes the -

"Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross..." (New Testament | Colossians 2:14)

That is why Paul teaches us -

"Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;
22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?" (New Testament | Colossians 2:20 - 22)

In other words, we need to repent unto death (Godly sorrow) if we have followed the philosophies or wickedness of men. Therefore -

"Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience..." (New Testament | Colossians 3:5 - 6)

And -

"...put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth." (New Testament | Colossians 3:8)

For -

"...he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons." (New Testament | Colossians 3:25)
