D&C 50
As the Prophet Joseph Smith was being taught the manner of and the influences of the Spirit, the Lord reasoned -
"...he that receiveth the word by the Spirit of truth receiveth it as it is preached by the Spirit of truth?
22 Wherefore, he that preacheth and he that receiveth, understand one another, and both are edified and rejoice together." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 50:21 - 22)
Edify means -
a : build b : establish
: to instruct and improve especially in moral and religious knowledge : uplift; also : enlighten, inform (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
To be edified means then to be instructed, built-up, uplifted, and improved in moral and religious knowledge. What is interesting is the Savior's following words -
"...that which doth not edify is not of God, and is darkness." (Doctrine and Covenants
Section 50:23)
That would suggest that when one is edified, it is the opposite of darkness being light. Edification must then be receiving light for -
"That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 50:24)
so that -
"...you may know the truth, that you may chase darkness from among you..." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 50:25)
It is the truth taught by the Spirit that edifies, that brings light. This helps us better understand the teaching of the Lord -
"The glory of God is intelligence, or, in other words, light and truth." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 93:36)
The glory of God then has a great deal with the idea of edification.
