D&C 42

With the instructions for new converts in the east to gather west, the Lord  prophesied -

"...this in consequence of that which is coming on the earth, and of secret combinations."  (Doctrine and Covenants Section 42:64)

Having written of the secret combinations among the Jaredites, Moroni comments that these secret combinations -

"...have caused the destruction of this people of whom I am now speaking, and also the destruction of the people of Nephi."  (Book of Mormon Ether 8:21)

Then Moroni warns that -

"...whatsoever nation shall uphold such secret combinations, to get power and gain, until they shall spread over the nation, behold, they shall be destroyed..."  (Book of Mormon Ether 8:22)

Knowing that these words would come forth in our day, Moroni continues his warning -

"...when ye shall see these things come among you that ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation, because of this secret combination which shall be among you; or wo be unto it...For it cometh to pass that whoso buildeth it up seeketh to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries; and it bringeth to pass the destruction of all people, for it is built up by the devil, who is the father of all lies..."  (Book of Mormon
Ether 8:24 - 25)
 
Can we not recognize such secret combinations in our government today?  Amongst all political parties and organizations.  Are these secret combinations for our welfare or for their own political power.  Does it not awaken our sense of our awful situation?  Pay attention to Moroni prophesied would take place -
 
"...whatsoever nation shall uphold such secret combinations, to get power and gain, until they shall spread over the nation, behold, they shall be destroyed..." (Book of Mormon Ether 8:22)
 
As we view all nations throughout the history of the world, they have all eventually failed other than those currently exist.  A quick study would reveal that secret combinations was generally the cause.



President David O. McKay wrote
 
". . . Latter-day Saints should have nothing to do with secret combinations and groups antagonistic to the constitutional law of the land, which the Lord suffered to be established, and which 'should be maintained for the rights and protection of all flesh according to just and holy principles.'" (David O. McKay, Gospel Ideals, p. 306.)
