Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

D&C 122

At the very beginning of the Prophet Joseph Smith life's mission, the Prophet recorded that the angel Moroni told him -

"...that my name should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues, or that it should be both good and evil spoken of among all people."  (Pearl of Great Price | JS-History 1:33)

Now many years, later the Lord again tells the Prophet -

"THE ends of the earth shall inquire after thy name, and fools shall have thee in derision, and hell shall rage against thee;
2 While the pure in heart, and the wise, and the noble, and the virtuous, shall seek counsel, and authority, and blessings constantly from under thy hand."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 122:1 - 2)

It is then that the Prophet continues to have a "high mountain" experience as the Savior provides His perspective or and Eternal perspective of eternal life as He teaches -

"If thou art called to pass through tribulation; if thou art in perils among false brethren; if thou art in perils among robbers; if thou art in perils by land or by sea;
6 If thou art accused with all manner of false accusations; if thine enemies fall upon thee; if they tear thee from the society of thy father and mother and brethren and sisters; and if with a drawn sword thine enemies tear thee from the bosom of thy wife, and of thine offspring, and thine elder son, although but six years of age, shall cling to thy garments, and shall say, My father, my father, why can't you stay with us? O, my father, what are the men going to do with you? and if then he shall be thrust from thee by the sword, and thou be dragged to prison, and thine enemies prowl around thee like wolves for the blood of the lamb..."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 122:5 - 6)

I see that these were the tribulations that the Prophet was struggling with in his life.  But then the Savior adds to these tribulations, which I believe are in reference to that which the Savior Himself experienced, that the Prophet had not experienced, saying -

"And if thou shouldst be cast into the pit, or into the hands of murderers, and the sentence of death passed upon thee; if thou be cast into the deep; if the billowing surge conspire against thee; if fierce winds become thine enemy; if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 122:7)

I believe that the Savior is trying to explain that He had experienced far greater tribulation.  Itis then He asks -

"The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than he?"  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 122:8)

Knowing the blessings of tribulation that came through the infinite atonement, the Savior lovingly comforts the Prophet that all this will be for your good.  I can't help but think of the teachings of Alma concerning the atonement and a blessing for good the Savior received as -

"...he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people....and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities."  (Book of Mormon | Alma 7:11 - 12)

I believe the promises of good are to all that love Him.
