Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Alma taught His son Helaman -

"O, remember, my son, and learn wisdom in thy youth; yea, learn in thy youth to keep the commandments of God."  (Book of Mormon | Alma 37:35)

We learn -

"...concerning the ten virgins.
57 For they that are wise and have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide..."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 45:56 - 57)

To be wise or possess wisdom suggests to me not only to have knowledge but have with it experience to be able to apply true knowledge for Jacob taught -

"...O the vainness, and the frailties, and the foolishness of men! When they are learned they think they are wise, and they hearken not unto the counsel of God, for they set it aside, supposing they know of themselves, wherefore, their wisdom is foolishness and it profiteth them not. And they shall perish.
29 But to be learned is good if they hearken unto the counsels of God."  (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 9:28 - 29)

Possessing true wisdom or being wise requires one to keep the commandments.  This is the only way one can have full capacity of choice and agency.  I like the words of David J. Ridges -

"Perhaps you’ve heard someone complain that there are too many commandments and that there doesn’t seem to be much freedom in living the gospel. People who think this do not understand freedom. They fail to realize that it is the breaking of God’s commandments that limits freedom and reduces options.  ...the fact [is] that commandments are great blessings. In effect, they are the “instruction manual” for true human freedom and happiness. They bring us from spiritual darkness and confusion into the light of eternal perspective and understanding. They enable us to exercise our moral agency in ways that lead to the highest blessings and most satisfying lifestyle in the universe, namely, godhood. The truly wise seek the commandments of God. The foolish reject them until they are bound by consequences."  (Ridges, David J. (2008-05-21). Doctrine and Covenants Made Easier Volume 2 )

Is it any wonder that as the Lord was began to remind the saints of His commandments, He teaches -

"...blessed are they whose feet stand upon the land of Zion, who have obeyed my gospel; for they shall receive for their reward the good things of the earth, and it shall bring forth in its strength.
4  And they shall also be crowned with blessings from above, yea, and with commandments not a few, and with revelations in their time—they that are faithful and diligent before me."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 59:3 - 4)

The more commandments, the more opportunity for blessings.  Even the two great commandments -

"....Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy might, mind, and strength; and in the name of Jesus Christ thou shalt serve him.
6 Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself..."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 59:5 - 6)

Which also includes -

"...Thou shalt not steal; neither commit adultery, nor kill, nor do anything like unto it.
7 Thou shalt thank the Lord thy God in all things.
8 Thou shalt offer a sacrifice unto the Lord thy God in righteousness, even that of a broken heart and a contrite spirit."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 59:6 - 8)

It is in these commandments, the Lord adds, "and in the name of Jesus Christ thou shalt serve him." which suggests that we represent Him in all things.  And also "nor do anything like unto it" which would suggest anything similar activity, which would also suggest to those that are looking for "exclusion clauses" or justification to follow the spirit of the law in order to become spotless.
