D&C 101
In the Parable of the nobleman, his servants, and his vineyard, the Lord, as he planted twelve olive trees -
"...set watchmen round about them, and build a tower, that one may overlook the land round about, to be a watchman upon the tower..." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 101:45)
These watchment were nothing more than priesthood leaders given the responsibility so -
"...that mine olive-trees may not be broken down when the enemy shall come to spoil and take upon themselves the fruit of my vineyard." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 101:45)
Even amongst these watchmen was one that was to preside and overlook the land. What a great responsibility those that that have been set or set apart to be watchmen. In this parable -
"...while they were at variance one with another they became very slothful, and they hearkened not unto the commandments of their lord." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 101:50)
The failure of these watchmen was they were not in unity and thus not following the commandments given of the Lord. They had not the Spirit nor His guidance, thus -
"...the enemy came by night, and broke down the hedge; and the servants of the nobleman arose and were affrighted, and fled; and the enemy destroyed their works, and broke down the olive-trees." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 101:51)
The lessen is the watchmen must be in unity and in standing in their place.
