John the Revelator wrote -
"...To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it." (New Testament Revelation 2:17)
The Prophet Joseph Smith also wrote -
"...the white stone mentioned in Revelation 2:17, will become a Urim and Thummim to each individual who receives one, whereby things pertaining to a higher order of kingdoms will be made known;
11 And a white stone is given to each of those who come into the celestial kingdom, whereon is a new name written, which no man knoweth save he that receiveth it. The new name is the key word." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 130:10 - 11)
I'm sure many have pondered this "white stone", what exactly it is and what it means. I have too. The footnote for "whereon is a new name written" references the teachings of King Benjamin whereby he said -
"...I would that ye should remember to retain the name written always in your hearts, that ye are not found on the left hand of God, but that ye hear and know the voice by which ye shall be called, and also, the name by which he shall call you." (Book of Mormon Mosiah 5:12)
My thoughts tend to lead me to believe that white stone described is a temple. It is on the temple the Lord's name is written. It is in the temple that we take upon us the name of Christ. It is in the temple that we learn the "name by which he shall call" us. It is in the temple that we learn "things pertaining to a higher order of kingdoms". In a sense, the temple is a great Urim and Thummim. In what size or shape the white stone will be in the Celestial Kingdom, I don't know. But I still feel it is a temple for the Lord said -
"...for in my Father's house are many mansions..." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 98:18)
