Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

D&C 6

As I read this revelation given to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, two things that were specifically addressed to Oliver seemed to impress upon me. The first being -

"...if thou wilt inquire, thou shalt know mysteries which are great and marvelous..." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 6:11)

The Lord tells Oliver that he has given him a gift. It seems this gift was the gift of revelation as the Lord tells him -

"...therefore thou shalt exercise thy gift, that thou mayest find out mysteries, that thou mayest bring many to the knowledge of the truth..." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 6:11)

The Lord continues -

"...blessed art thou for what thou hast done; for thou hast inquired of me, and behold, as often as thou hast inquired thou hast received instruction of my Spirit. If it had not been so, thou wouldst not have come to the place where thou art at this time.
15 Behold, thou knowest that thou hast inquired of me and I did enlighten thy mind; and now I tell thee these things that thou mayest know that thou hast been enlightened by the Spirit of truth..." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 6:14 - 15)

The Lord teaches Oliver that this gift of revelation would enlighten his mind. One way the Lord provides revelation is by enlightening our minds. And then the Savior teaches this great truth -

"...I tell thee, that thou mayest know that there is none else save God that knowest thy thoughts and the intents of thy heart." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 6:16)

This is very comforting thought. Only God knows our thoughts and our inward desires. This would also suggest that Satan does not know our thoughts. He can only see our actions.

The second thing that seemed to impress upon me is the instruction Oliver received as, in a sense, a "counselor" to the Prophet. The Lord said -

"...be diligent; stand by my servant Joseph, faithfully, in whatsoever difficult circumstances he may be for the word's sake." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 6:18)

And with this, he was to -

"Admonish him in his faults, and also receive admonition of him..." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 6:19)

And in doing so -

"...Be patient; be sober; be temperate; have patience, faith, hope and charity." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 6:19)

This is great counsel to any that serve as counselors.
