Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

1 Nephi 16 - 17

There a many today that claim that just believing in Jesus Christ or "accepting" him as their Savior is all that is required for salvation. The Savior himself speaking to those of much the same attitude said -

"Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham." (New Testament Luke 3:8)

As I read the teachings of the Savior, he requires more - repentance and keeping his commandments. Using the children of Israel as a example, Nephi tells his brothers -

"...after they had crossed the river Jordan he did make them mighty unto the driving out of the children of the land, yea, unto the scattering them to destruction.
33 And now, do ye suppose that the children of this land, who were in the land of promise, who were driven out by our fathers, do ye suppose that they were righteous? Behold, I say unto you, Nay.
34 Do ye suppose that our fathers would have been more choice than they if they had been righteous? I say unto you, Nay." (Book of Mormon 1 Nephi 17:32 - 34)

Nephi then tells this truth -

"...the Lord esteemeth all flesh in one; he that is righteous is favored of God." (Book of Mormon 1 Nephi 17:35)

"...And he loveth those who will have him to be their God." (Book of Mormon 1 Nephi 17:40)

You can tell that much more is required that just a verbal acceptance for -

"...he raiseth up a righteous nation, and destroyeth the nations of the wicked.
38 And he leadeth away the righteous into precious lands, and the wicked he destroyeth, and curseth the land unto them for their sakes." (Book of Mormon 1 Nephi 17:37 - 38)

Nephi teaches the importance of righteousness or obedience to his brethren again with the children of Israel for -

"...he did straiten them in the wilderness with his rod; for they hardened their hearts, even as ye have; and the Lord straitened them because of their iniquity. He sent fiery flying serpents among them; and after they were bitten he prepared a way that they might be healed; and the labor which they had to perform was to look; and because of the simpleness of the way, or the easiness of it, there were many who perished." (Book of Mormon 1 Nephi 17:41)

Nephi, son of Helaman teaches his people that this same experience of the children of Israel can be easily compared to the Savior -

"...And as [Moses] lifted up the brazen serpent in the wilderness, even so shall he be lifted up who should come.
15 And as many as should look upon that serpent should live, even so as many as should look upon the Son of God with faith, having a contrite spirit, might live, even unto that life which is eternal." (Book of Mormon Helaman 8:14 - 15)

A complete study of the words of Christ, one will come to an understanding -

"...that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do." (Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 25:23)
