Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

1 Timothy 3

We are blessed with some very detailed instruction of Paul as he writes and individual, Timothy, in his priesthood duty.  First Timothy is counseled in the manner of considering brethren to be bishops and deacons in Ephesus.  In considering bishops, Paul counsels -

"A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil."  (New Testament | 1 Timothy 3:2 - 7)

I understand that "vigilant" herein suggests temperate, and "sober" suggests "self-control". What I find interesting is Paul's counsel concerning their wives -

"Even so must their wives be grave (of respected character), not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things."  (New Testament | 1 Timothy 3:11)

Paul then counsels Timothy to be very careful to only teach true doctrine for Paul knew the days would come where there would be "falling away"  due to -

"...seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats..."  (New Testament | 1 Timothy 4:1 - 3)

Thus Paul counseled Timothy -

"If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained."  (New Testament | 1 Timothy 4:6)

Which core doctrine is to -

"...trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
11 These things command and teach."  (New Testament | 1 Timothy 4:10 - 11)

We are to teach pure doctrine.  Much like our young missionaries today the proselyte throughout the world -

Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee."  (New Testament | 1 Timothy 4:12 - 16)
