Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Colossians 3

Paul teaches that we must be -

"Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God..."  (New Testament | Colossians 2:12)

And of this rising in faith, Paul teaches -

"IF ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above..."  (New Testament | Colossians 3:1)

In other words, we should strive to keep His commandments by living righteously  as we endure to the end.  Some of those commandments or seeking those things above include -

"Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry..."  (New Testament | Colossians 3:5)

"...also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds..."  (New Testament | Colossians 3:8 - 9)

"Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful."  (New Testament | Colossians 3:12 - 15)

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him."  (New Testament | Colossians 3:16 - 17)

As well as -

"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.
20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.
21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.
22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God..."  (New Testament | Colossians 3:18 - 22)

Paul also warned the Colossians -

"Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind..."  (New Testament | Colossians 2:18)

A false doctrine that was creeping into the Church was that men were to work through patron angels or saints.  We read  in the Institute of Religion New Testament student manual entitled The Life and Teachings of Jesus and His Apostles

"The Gnostic philosophy held that God was not directly approachable by man but had to be contacted through a series of angelic mediators or less divine spirits. Paul is here denouncing this idea of worshiping angels, which led the Saints away from allegiance to the true head (Christ), and only true mediator between man and God."  (The Life and Teachings of Jesus and His Apostles, page 345)

Keeping all this counsel requires great faith...maybe that is why Paul emphasizes that by faith we are saved.
