Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

D&C 11

The Lord told Hyrum Smith -

"Behold, thou hast a gift, or thou shalt have a gift if thou wilt desire of me in faith, with an honest heart, believing in the power of Jesus Christ, or in my power which speaketh unto thee..."  (Doctrine and Covenants  Section 11:10)

Of Hyrum and his gift, Joseph Field Smith wrote -

“The Lord declared that Hyrum Smith had a gift. The great gift which he possessed was that of a tender, sympathetic heart; a merciful spirit. The Lord on a later occasion said: ‘Blessed is my servant Hyrum Smith; for I, the Lord, love him because of the integrity of his heart, and because he loveth that which is right before me, saith the Lord.’ (D&C 124:15.) This great gift was manifest in his jealous watch care over the Prophet lest some harm come to him.” (Church History and Modern Revelation, by Joseph Fielding Smith, Deseret Book Company, 1946, Vol. 1 p. 57.)

As I read of the gift given to Hyrum as described by Joseph Fielding Smith, I couldn't help but sense that my father possessed the same gift of the Spirit.  He was a man of integrity of heart, loving all men and that which right before the Lord.

As the Church introduces the new teaching method for the youth of the Church, "Come, Follow Me", much of this new method of teaching in the Savior's way includes being spiritually and doctrinally prepared.  This seems to follow the Lord's instruction to Hyrum Smith -

"Seek not to declare my word, but first seek to obtain my word, and then shall your tongue be loosed; then, if you desire, you shall have my Spirit and my word, yea, the power of God unto the convincing of men.
22 But now hold your peace; study my word which hath gone forth among the children of men, and also study my word which shall come forth among the children of men, or that which is now translating, yea, until you have obtained all which I shall grant unto the children of men in this generation, and then shall all things be added thereto."  (Doctrine and Covenants  Section 11:21 - 22)

"...seek the kingdom of God, and all things shall be added according to that which is just.
24 Build upon my rock, which is my gospel..."  (Doctrine and Covenants  Section 11:23 - 24)

In summary -

"Behold, this is your work, to keep my commandments, yea, with all your might, mind and strength."  (Doctrine and Covenants  Section 11:20)
