Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Alma 43

I wonder if, as Mormon abridged the records, that he fully understood that in latter days...our day, that there would be "wars and rumor of wars". Even though there were many wars and conflicts throughout the Nephite records, it seems apparent that he thought the history regarding the wars in the days of Captain Moroni would be of greatest benefit for us.

It is during this period we learn that there were wicked individuals whose -

"...designs were to stir up the Lamanites to anger against the Nephites; this he did that he might usurp great power over them, and also that he might gain power over the Nephites by bringing them into bondage." (Book of Mormon | Alma 43:8)

For the purpose -

"...that he might preserve their hatred towards the Nephites, that he might bring them into subjection to the accomplishment of his designs."
(Book of Mormon | Alma 43:7)

In opposition -

"...the design of the Nephites was to support their lands, and their houses, and their wives, and their children, that they might preserve them from the hands of their enemies; and also that they might preserve their rights and their privileges, yea, and also their liberty, that they might worship God according to their desires.
10 For they knew that if they should fall into the hands of the Lamanites, that whosoever should worship God in spirit and in truth, the true and the living God, the Lamanites would destroy." (Book of Mormon | Alma 43:9 - 10)

In there day -

"...the leader of the Nephites, or the man who had been appointed to be the chief captain over the Nephites—now the chief captain took the command of all the armies of the Nephites—and his name was Moroni;
17 And Moroni took all the command, and the government of their wars." (Book of Mormon | Alma 43:16 - 17)

Moroni wasn't just any military leader. Mormon would later say of Captain Moroni and war that -

"...his heart did glory in it; not in the shedding of blood but in doing good, in preserving his people, yea, in keeping the commandments of God, yea, and resisting iniquity.
17 Yea, verily, verily I say unto you, if all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men." (Book of Mormon | Alma 48:16 - 17)

I believe Mormon is telling us that we need a "Captain Moroni" in our day, not a man after the order of Nehors...or those that desire personal gain.
