Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

1 Nephi 5

As Nephi as his brethren return with the brass plates that Laban had been in possession of, we learn some very important doctrine concerning the record of the Jews or the Old Testament. First, Nephi records that upon returning, they -

"...did offer sacrifice and burnt offerings unto the Lord; and they gave thanks unto the God of Israel." (Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 5:9)

It is apparent that Lehi and his family were descendents of the children of Israel and were living the law of Moses as commanded. From further readings, it is more than apparent that the children of Israel at that time and previously were very aware of the coming of Christ and his teachings and this law was to prepare them for such than the present Old Testament teaches. Of these brass plates, we learn -

"...they did contain the five books of Moses, which gave an account of the creation of the world, and also of Adam and Eve, who were our first parents;
12 And also a record of the Jews from the beginning, even down to the commencement of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah;
13 And also the prophecies of the holy prophets, from the beginning, even down to the commencement of the reign of Zedekiah; and also many prophecies which have been spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah." (Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 5:11 - 13)

Therefore, like the Bible, this record declares that Adam and Eve were the first parents. We also learn that this record still exists for -

"That these plates of brass should go forth unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people who were of his seed.
19 Wherefore, he said that these plates of brass should never perish..." (Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 5:18 - 19)

It becomes clear that the day will come, when interpreted, we will be able to have and read that record. It will be an interesting day as we are able to compare this record to the handed down, written, and rewritten present Old Testament. Last of all we learn a very important principle -

"...we had obtained the records which the Lord had commanded us, and searched them and found that they were desirable; yea, even of great worth unto us, insomuch that we could preserve the commandments of the Lord unto our children.
22 Wherefore, it was wisdom in the Lord that we should carry them with us, as we journeyed in the wilderness towards the land of promise." (Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 5:21 - 22)

Just as critical to Lehi and his posterity were the these teachings, so are the scriptures in our day that we also "carry them with us, as we journeyed in the wilderness towards the land of promise". The promised land being exaltation.
