D&C 137
In a great vision in the Kirtland Temple just months before its dedication, the Lord revealed -
"All who have died without a knowledge of this gospel, who would have received it if they had been permitted to tarry, shall be heirs of the celestial kingdom of God..." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 137:7)
The Lord then explains "who would have received it" with -
"...who would have received it with all their hearts..." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 137:8)
The Lord is teaching that works alone is not necessarily the only requirement, but the condition of the heart. This supports the words of King Benjamin to his people -
"...because of the covenant which ye have made ye shall be called the children of Christ, his sons, and his daughters; for behold, this day he hath spiritually begotten you; for ye say that your hearts are changed through faith on his name; therefore, ye are born of him and have become his sons and his daughters." (Book of Mormon Mosiah 5:7)
Even Alma asked the people of Zarahemla -
"...Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?" (Book of Mormon Alma 5:14)
It is in the final judgement that the Lord has stated -
"...I, the Lord, will judge all men according to their works, according to the desire of their hearts." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 137:9)
