Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

D&C 21

From the day the Church was organized, the Lord commanded of the Prophet -

"...there shall be a record kept among you; and in it thou shalt be called a seer, a translator, a prophet, an apostle of Jesus Christ, an elder of the church through the will of God the Father, and the grace of your Lord Jesus Christ..." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 21:1)

And the Prophet or the "First Elder" or presiding authority of the Church was to be -

"...inspired of the Holy Ghost to lay the foundation thereof, and to build it up unto the most holy faith." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 21:2)

And the Saints -

"...meaning the church, thou shalt give heed unto all his words and commandments which he shall give unto you as he receiveth them, walking in all holiness before me;
5 For his word ye shall receive, as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 21:4 - 5)

The challenge or test for us is to do this "in all patience and faith". Not in ignorance, but faith for we have been promised that His Spirit will so witness to us as to his Holy calling. Of this "patience and faith", President Harold B. Lee warned -

“The only safety we have as members of this church is to do exactly what the Lord said to the Church in that day when the Church was organized. We must learn to give heed to the words and commandments that the Lord shall give through his prophet, ‘as he receiveth them, walking in all holiness before me; . . . as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith.’ (D&C 21:4–5.) There will be some things that take patience and faith. You may not like what comes from the authority of the Church. It may contradict your political views. It may contradict your social views. It may interfere with some of your social life.. . . Your safety and ours depends upon whether or not we follow the ones whom the Lord has placed to preside over his church. He knows whom he wants to preside over this church, and he will make no mistake. The Lord doesn’t do things by accident. . . .Let’s keep our eye on the President of the Church.” (In Conference Report, Oct. 1970, pp. 152–53.)

As with all commandments, the Lord promises with obedience great blessings. In this case -

"For by doing these things the gates of hell shall not prevail against you; yea, and the Lord God will disperse the powers of darkness from before you, and cause the heavens to shake for your good, and his name's glory." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 21:6)

As I pondered the words "the heavens to shake for your good", my thoughts are of as the heavens shake, blessings sprinkle upon those who so obey.
