Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

2 Nephi 1 - 2

Lehi taught his son Jacob -

"...the law is given unto men. And by the law no flesh is justified..." (Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 2:5)

I believe the law Lehi is referring to in this case is the Law of Moses, even though it would apply to all laws. The jews at the time of Christ believed that it was compliance to the Law of Moses that would save them. Nothing else was required. But Lehi taught Jacob that obedience to God's law only did not save man because -

"...by the temporal law they were cut off; and also, by the spiritual law they perish from that which is good, and become miserable forever." (Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 2:5)

For -

"...salvation doth not come by the law alone; and were it not for the atonement, which God himself shall make for the sins and iniquities of his people, that they must unavoidably perish, notwithstanding the law of Moses.
(Book of Mormon Mosiah 13:28)

Wherefore -

"redemption cometh in and through the Holy Messiah; for he is full of grace and truth." (Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 2:6)

For it is the Savior that

"...offereth himself a sacrifice for sin, to answer the ends of the law, unto all those who have a broken heart and a contrite spirit; and unto none else can the ends of the law be answered."
(Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 2:7)

Paul taught the same to the Galations -

"Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified." (New Testament Galatians 2:16)

My profession is that of a contractor. Contracts are my business. For a contract to be valid requires an offer, an acceptance, and some form of consideration. Civil law recognizes that a default of the agreement by either party, the defaulting party has an obligation for caused damages. Sometimes those damages are pre-defined such as liquidated damages. All the conditions of the contract could be considered the "ends" of the agreement.

From Lehi we learn -

"...the ends of the law which the Holy One hath given.." that there is a punishment affixed to all laws. and the "...the inflicting of the punishment which is affixed, which punishment that is affixed is in opposition to that of the happiness which is affixed..." (Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 2:10)

And the only condition of the law that satisfies the ends of the law is the atonement of Jesus Christ. And to satisfy or "...to answer the ends of the atonement..." (Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 2:10) requires us "...to answer the ends of the law, unto all those who have a broken heart and a contrite spirit; and unto none else can the ends of the law be answered." (Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 2:7)

For -

"...all men come unto God; wherefore, they stand in the presence of him, to be judged of him according to the truth and holiness which is in him." (Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 2:10)

That is why we -

"...we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins." (Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 25:26)

"...for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do." (Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 25:23)
