Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

D&C 88

It is in this revelation, that the Lord teaches some of the "spiritual physics" of the universe.  He begins His explanation of Himself, that =

"He that ascended up on high, as also he descended below all things, in that he comprehended all things, that he might be in all and through all things, the light of truth..."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 88:6)

Alma explained "descended below all things" as he taught the people in Gideon -

"...he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people.
12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.
13 Now the Spirit knoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth according to the flesh that he might take upon him the sins of his people, that he might blot out their transgressions according to the power of his deliverance; and now behold, this is the testimony which is in me."  (Book of Mormon | Alma 7:11 - 13)

By descending below and above all things, that through the atonement, the Savior comprehended all things, thus possessing the light of truth -

"Which truth shineth. This is the light of Christ..."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 88:7)

Which light "is in all and through all things".  Thus -

"...As also he is in the sun, and the light of the sun, and the power thereof by which it was made.
8 As also he is in the moon, and is the light of the moon, and the power thereof by which it was made;
9 As also the light of the stars, and the power thereof by which they were made..."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 88:7 - 9)

Thus, it is -

"The light which is in all things, which giveth life to all things, which is the law by which all things are governed, even the power of God who sitteth upon his throne, who is in the bosom of eternity, who is in the midst of all things."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 88:13)

This light is not only that which gives truth, structure, and life to the universe, it is also -

"...the light which shineth, which giveth you light, is through him who enlighteneth your eyes, which is the same light that quickeneth your understandings..."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 88:11)

Which light then is the source by which we learn the mysteries of God.  Basically, the Light of Christ is a medium, energy, power, influence... -

"Which light proceedeth forth from the presence of God to fill the immensity of space—"  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 88:12)

As I pondered these words this morning, it seemed to become apparent to me that this light, influence or energy of truth is controlled, utilized, and governed by God..."even the power of God".  In my mind, though this light permeates the universe, it is controlled by the "priesthood".  I believe God (or the Savior) controls this light through the priesthood.  And -

"...the rights of the priesthood are inseparably connected with the powers of heaven, and that the powers of heaven cannot be controlled nor handled only upon the principles of righteousness."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 121:36)

Synonyms, in my mind for the priesthood are "power of Godliness, Holiness, powers of Heaven" and so forth. That is why the priesthood  -

"...holdeth the key of the mysteries of the kingdom, even the key of the knowledge of God.
20 Therefore, in the ordinances thereof, the power of godliness is manifest."  (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 84:19 - 20)

These blessings come through the Light of Christ.  As we ponder that holding the priesthood is the authority to act in the name of God, this would suggest that we have the capacity to perform truth and the Lord's will concerning the Light of Christ.
