Ether 1
I had a thought this morning as I began to read the abridged record of Ether. Now I need to make this clear that my thoughts are only speculative. The record states -
"...Jared came forth with his brother and their families, with some others and their families, from the great tower, at the time the Lord confounded the language of the people, and swore in his wrath that they should be scattered upon all the face of the earth; and according to the word of the Lord the people were scattered." (Book of Mormon Ether 1:33)
This event is recorded in the 11th chapter of Genesis. Throughout the scriptures, the Lord has always warned the people before exercising his privilege and causing an event. This seems to the case as it is apparent that the brother of Jared knew that this would happen as we read -
"And the brother of Jared being a large and mighty man, and a man highly favored of the Lord, Jared, his brother, said unto him: Cry unto the Lord, that he will not confound us that we may not understand our words.
35 And it came to pass that the brother of Jared did cry unto the Lord, and the Lord had compassion upon Jared; therefore he did not confound the language of Jared; and Jared and his brother were not confounded." (Book of Mormon Ether 1:34 - 35)
It becomes obvious that the Lord had already warned the people that He was going to do this unless they repented. My speculation is that the brother of Jared being one "highly favored of the Lord" would suggest to me that he was proven to be very obedient and faithful. Having thus been proven could possibly suggest that the brother of Jared was a prophet of God and could easily been the prophet or one of other prophets that had testified to the people that unless they repented, their language would be confounded. It becomes clear that of language of Jared and his brother was not confounded and that they were able to keep the original or Adamic language.
Another thought was the Jared and all his friends -
"...did build barges, in which they did cross many waters, being directed continually by the hand of the Lord." (Book of Mormon Ether 2:6)
Having had this experience, it makes sense than when commanded to build barges to cross the ocean that the brother of Jared recognized the problem of light and ventilation.
