Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Alma 60

In modern revelation we learn -

"No power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood, only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned;
42 By kindness, and pure knowledge, which shall greatly enlarge the soul without hypocrisy, and without guile—
43 Reproving betimes with sharpness, when moved upon by the Holy Ghost; and then showing forth afterwards an increase of love toward him whom thou hast reproved, lest he esteem thee to be his enemy..." (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 121:41 - 43)

It is in a letter to Pahoran that Moroni demonstrates the righteous "reproving betimes with sharpness, when moved upon by the Holy Ghost". It is in the reproving that Moroni begins -

"...behold, we desire to know the cause of this exceedingly great neglect; yea, we desire to know the cause of your thoughtless state." (Book of Mormon | Alma 60:6)

Note: I used this scripture once when my son failed to be diligent in sending home regular weekly letters while on his mission>

In his reproving, Moroni questions -

"Can you think to sit upon your thrones in a state of thoughtless stupor, while your enemies are spreading the work of death around you?..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 60:7)

The "work of death" would include spiritual death in our day -

"...for ye ought to be beloved; yea, and ye ought to have stirred yourselves more diligently for the welfare and the freedom of this people..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 60:10)

"Behold, could ye suppose that ye could sit upon your thrones, and because of the exceeding goodness of God ye could do nothing and he would deliver you? Behold, if ye have supposed this ye have supposed in vain." (Book of Mormon | Alma 60:11)

Again, Moroni reproves much like that taught by Alma -

"Have ye forgotten the commandments of the Lord your God? Yea, have ye forgotten the captivity of our fathers? Have ye forgotten the many times we have been delivered out of the hands of our enemies?
21 Or do ye suppose that the Lord will still deliver us, while we sit upon our thrones and do not make use of the means which the Lord has provided for us?" (Book of Mormon | Alma 60:20 - 21)

In our day, "means" could also mean the technology provided in our day. He continues -

"...will ye sit in idleness..." (Book of Mormon | Alma 60:22)

"Do ye suppose that God will look upon you as guiltless while ye sit still and behold these things? " (Book of Mormon | Alma 60:23)

With thise questions, Moroni teaches some very important doctrine. One being -

"...the Lord suffereth the righteous to be slain that his justice and judgment may come upon the wicked; therefore ye need not suppose that the righteous are lost because they are slain; but behold, they do enter into the rest of the Lord their God." (Book of Mormon | Alma 60:13)

And -

"...Now I would that ye should remember that God has said that the inward vessel shall be cleansed first, and then shall the outer vessel be cleansed also." (Book of Mormon | Alma 60:23)

And finally as a warning to all citizens of this and all nations -

"...the Lord will not suffer that ye shall live and wax strong in your iniquities to destroy his righteous people." (Book of Mormon | Alma 60:31)
