Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Daniel 10 - Hosea 2

Daniel is privileged to receive several visions and revelations of things that must transpire from his day to the 2nd coming of the Savior. Of great significance is his privilege to be visited by him. He describes this event -

"...I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz:
6 His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude." (Old Testament Daniel 10:5 - 6)

Joseph Smith describes a similar experience much the same way -

"THE veil was taken from our minds, and the eyes of our understanding were opened.
2 We saw the Lord standing upon the breastwork of the pulpit, before us; and under his feet was a paved work of pure gold, in color like amber.
3 His eyes were as a flame of fire; the hair of his head was white like the pure snow; his countenance shone above the brightness of the sun; and his voice was as the sound of the rushing of great waters..." (Doctrine and Covenants Section 110:1 - 3)

Like many prophets before that had been visited by the Savior for afterwards -

"... there remained no strength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength." (Old Testament Daniel 10:8)

And being of little strength -

"...here came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me,
19 And said, O man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me." (Old Testament Daniel 10:18 - 19)

And after helping Daniel to regain his strength the angel says -

"...now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come.
21 But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince." (Old Testament Daniel 10:20 - 21)

When I read this I thought the prince of Persia then the prince of Grecia is the very prince of all wickness - Satan. The mission then of Michael (Adam), the father of all, becomes clear that he is a prince of righteousness to combat Satan. We read in modern day as the gospel is being restored -

"And again, what do we hear? Glad tidings from Cumorah! Moroni, an angel from heaven, declaring the fulfilment of the prophets—the book to be revealed. A voice of the Lord in the wilderness of Fayette, Seneca county, declaring the three witnesses to bear record of the book! The voice of Michael on the banks of the Susquehanna, detecting the devil when he appeared as an angel of light! The voice of Peter, James, and John in the wilderness between Harmony, Susquehanna county, and Colesville, Broome county, on the Susquehanna river, declaring themselves as possessing the keys of the kingdom, and of the dispensation of the fulness of times!" (Doctrine and Covenants Section 128:20)

An in the latter days, Daniel declares -

"AND at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book." (Old Testament Daniel 12:1)

We know of two times of trouble as Daniel prophecies -

"...from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up..." (Old Testament Daniel 12:11)

Ezekiel explains -

"Then shall they know that I am the LORD, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed." (Old Testament Ezekiel 33:29)

The Savior speaks of one of thes events during his mortal ministry -

"When you, therefore, shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, concerning the destruction of Jerusalem, then you shall stand in the holy place; whoso readeth let him understand." (Pearl of Great Price JS-Matthew 1:12)

Elder Bruce R. McConkie explained -

“These conditions of desolation, born of abomination and wickedness, were to occur twice in fulfilment of Daniel’s words. The first was to be when the Roman legions under Titus, in 70 A.D. laid siege to Jerusalem, destroying and scattering the people, leaving not one stone upon another in the desecrated temple, and spreading such terror and devastation as has seldom if ever been equalled on earth. . . .
“Then, speaking of the last days, . . . our Lord said: ‘And again shall the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, be fulfilled.’ ([JS—M] 1:31–32.) That is: Jerusalem again will be under siege. . . . It will be during this siege that Christ will come, the wicked will be destroyed, and the millennial era commenced.” (Mormon Doctrine, p. 12.)

Daniel also writes of the last day -

"...even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased." (Old Testament Daniel 12:4)

Knowledge in our day is as it never has been throughout the history of the world. And with this great blessing of knowledge -

"Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand." (Old Testament Daniel 12:10)
