Scripture Blog

This weblog is my personal online scripture journal. I try to read the scriptures each morning as I exercise on my cross-trainer. It has a great impact on my life and my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. The journal is really for my own benefit but I have set it up as a web log in hopes to benefit anyone else that may be interested. "For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." 1 Nephi 10:19

Jeremiah 5 - 9

A contemporary to Jeremiah, Nephi writes of Judah in his day -

"...behold, this people had rejected every word of God, and they were ripe in iniquity..." (Book of Mormon 1 Nephi 17:35)

As you read the words of Jeremiah, you can almost sense it is to late - the people are "ripe in iniquity". Much like Mormom said of his people -

"...I saw that the day of grace was passed with them, both temporally and spiritually..." (Book of Mormon Mormon 2:15)

Jeremiah gives several examples with -

"And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely." (Old Testament Jeremiah 5:2)

"...they have not grieved... they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return." (Old Testament Jeremiah 5:3)

The Lord asks -

"How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots' houses." (Old Testament Jeremiah 5:7)

Even to the point -

"They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour's wife." (Old Testament Jeremiah 5:8)

And -

"...among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.
27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.
28 They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge." (Old Testament Jeremiah 5:26 - 28)

And finally -

"...this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone." (Old Testament Jeremiah 5:23)

In many ways, they sound like many of today. Nephi warns us -

"...the Lord hath created the earth that it should be inhabited; and he hath created his children that they should possess it.
37 And he raiseth up a righteous nation, and destroyeth the nations of the wicked.
38 And he leadeth away the righteous into precious lands, and the wicked he destroyeth, and curseth the land unto them for their sakes.
39 He ruleth high in the heavens, for it is his throne, and this earth is his footstool." (Book of Mormon 1 Nephi 17:36 - 39)
