Matthew 22
Seeing that the Sadducees had failed in their attempt in condemning the Savior, a tempting Pharisee asked -
"Master, which is the great commandment in the law?" (New Testament | Matthew 22:36)
To which the Savior answered -
"...Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." (New Testament | Matthew 22:37 - 40)
The law would be the law of Moses, and the prophets are all those that taught the Lord's will and doctrine.
I think this is where many in the world miss the boat. Many suggest that any kind of love toward others pre-empts all. But the first law or great commandment is to love the God which suggests keeping His commandments. That comes first before we exercise or justify love or tolerance toward our fellow man.
You can tell the Savior abhorred hypocrisy. Especially of the scribes and Pharisees, where they established such strict law for the general population but did not adhere such of themselves. Obviously, not adhering the first and great commandment. Everything they did was priestcraft for their own personal gain.
As the Savior chastised these arrogant religious leaders in front of the general multitude, he said -
"Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted." (New Testament | Matthew 23:10 - 12)
Again teaching that service or ministering to others is His way, not power or position.
